Suspect arrested in Likhona Fose murder
Police have confirmed that a suspect linked to the murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose has been arrested.
The Grade 8 pupil at Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville, Johannesburg, was found dead with her body mutilated in an empty field on Sunday, 1 June.

Fose's family believes her murder was a homophobic hate crime because the teen identified as lesbian.
'One person was taken in for questioning on Monday, 9 June 2025. He was then linked to the murder and charged accordingly,' said Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.

City Power warns Johannesburg residents as cold weather sees spike in outages
City Power has issued an urgent appeal to Johannesburg residents and businesses to reduce electricity consumption as freezing temperatures sweep across Gauteng, threatening to overwhelm the city's power infrastructure and trigger widespread outages.
The utility company warned on Monday that excessive electricity usage during the current cold snap could cause localised network overloading, particularly in areas where infrastructure is already under strain.

With the South African Weather Service (Saws) forecasting temperatures to remain between 3 °C and 13°C throughout the week, and some areas expected to drop below freezing, City Power anticipates sustained pressure on the grid.

More snow and biting cold ahead this week
The first of many more cut-off low-system cold fronts that will come this winter season hit at the weekend.
Significant snowfall was reported over parts of the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape, with mountain passes closed as more snow is expected.

The cold temperatures will also continue, following the first two cold fronts of the season that made landfall over the country this weekend.
South African Weather Service senior forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela said temperatures were expected to start recovering to normal winter temperatures from Thursday afternoon as the cold front passes.

KZN pensioner killed and daughter left with a slit throat in attack
A pensioner in her eighties has been murdered and her 60-year-old daughter critically injured after a brutal attack at their Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, home.
The pensioner sustained multiple stab wounds to her face and body and was pronounced dead upon examination.

The 60-year-old daughter's throat was slit and she sustained stab wounds to her cheeks, neck and hands; said Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).
She reportedly bled extensively from these injuries, but the paramedics were able to stabilise her on scene. She has been transported to hospital.

Spar South Africa CEO Max Oliva has resigned from the group, just days after the retailer announced a decline in profits and a R4 billion loss.
The retailer said Oliva resigned after 30 years at Spar on Tuesday.

A spaza shop owner is the second suspect to be arrested for the brutal murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, whose body was found mutilated. Image: X A Pakistani spaza shop owner has been arrested as the second suspect in the brutal murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, whose body was found mutilated in Durban Deep, Roodepoort. IOL reported on Wednesday that the case of murder against the first suspect, 39-year-old Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, who is also accused of killing Likhona Fose, was postponed to June 18 for a formal bail application. Mnisi appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on charges of murder with the State indicating that it plans to oppose bail to Mnisi, who has a previous attempted murder conviction against him. In the latest development, City of Johannesburg's member of mayoral committee (MMC) for public safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika that the community played a pivotal role in the arrest of the Pakistani man. 'We were actually tipped off, and through the interrogation of Mduduzi and through the community, we managed to establish the link between Mduduzi and the Pakistani man," he said. Last week, IOL reported that City of Joburg Speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu and executive strategic advisor to the MMC of public safety, David Tembe, visited the family of Likhona. Reports indicate that the family suspects hate crime to be the motive in the murder of the Grade 8 pupil, who identified as a lesbian. Tembe, who was greeted to protesting community members and anti-gender-based violence activists, extended his condolences to the bereaved family, stating: "Her tragic and brutal killing, suspected to be linked to occult practices, has shaken the community. The city stands with the family during this time of immense grief, reaffirming its commitment to fighting heinous crimes and protecting the most vulnerable." IOL News

JOHANNESBURG - A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of Roodepoort teenager Likhona Fose. The suspect is a Pakistani spaza shop owner in the Durban Deep area. The 14-year-old's body was found dismembered and dumped in a veld near her home. The body parts that were taken are her genitals, parts of her knees, and a piece of her nose. The City of Joburg Public Safety Department on Wednesday confirmed that another suspect had been handcuffed in the murder case of the 14-year-old. According to the office, the suspect has been identified as a Pakistani national spaza shop owner. New suspect It is understood that the arrest took place following the chaos that erupted earlier when the shop was looted. 'A New suspect, a Pakistani spaza shop owner in Durban Deep, has been identified and arrested in connection with the murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose. Another suspect claims to have been instructed by this individual to commit the crime. 'The area is experiencing heightened tensions, with the shop being looted. Bail During court proceedings, Mnisi's lawyer revealed that his client has previous convictions for attempted murder and robbery. The defence indicated that Mnisi intends to apply for bail and complained that he was not provided with a bed and a blanket when taken to the Krugersdorp Correctional Centre. The matter has been postponed until 18 June for a formal bail application. State advocate Zanele Chauke confirmed that the prosecution will oppose bail.
