Watchme Win's staggering return continues against Giga Kick in the Goodwood

7NEWS08-05-2025

For all of trainer Andrew Gluyas' success — which includes three Group One wins with one solely under his name — he's never been successful in one of the four majors in South Australia.
When in partnership with Leon MacDonald, the training duo won the 2011 Caulfield Cup with Southern Speed and the 2014 Champagne Stakes with Indy Go Go, while more recently Gluyas won the Victoria Derby with Goldrush Guru.

The pair came agonisingly close in 2023 with Another Award, who finished second in both the Robert Sangster Stakes and The Goodwood, and Gluyas is hoping Watchme Win can go one better.
Sporting the same black and white colours of MacDonald racing, the four-year-old gelding won his way into the field with a strong victory in the Group 3 John Hawkes Stakes (1100m), although Gluyas admits it hadn't been the plan all along.
'Not really, we were just hoping to get him racing because he had a whole year off,' Gluyas said.
'So, after a good start-up prep, we gave him a break, after that Sir Sway race, and then we thought we'd see where he pops up, and he's popped up alright.'
A trackwork incident as a two-year-old nearly saw Watchme Win's career over before it started, but Gluyas is confident the five-time winner is ready for a crack at Group One level.
'We're excited for Saturday. He's come through that run in the John Hawkes really well, he's building towards the six furlongs and it just happens to be in a Group One, but he's good.'
As a set weights and penalties race, Watchme Win will likely carry 56kg in The Goodwood, giving away 1.5kg to all-in favourite Giga Kick, who hasn't won a race since May 2023 but is 24 official ratings points clear of Watchme Win, who is an $18 chance.
'I wish it was a handicap, that would've helped but that's the way it goes, it is how it is,' Gluyas lamented.
'I reckon it is (wide open) for them all, a lot of those mares are in good form out of the Sangster, so it should be good.'
'It's the right time to have a crack, if the race was somewhere else, well, maybe not, but at home, you may as well.
'Winning a Goodwood, that'd be alright, wouldn't it?'
Dual group 1 champion and Everest winner Giga Kick is a $2 favourite.

What is Plan B? Rosehill sale decision ‘missed opportunity'

The rejection by Australian Turf Club members of the $5bn Rosehill sale proposal is a 'missed opportunity' to financially future-proof Sydney and NSW racing for decades. This was the reaction of one leading trainer who contacted Racing Confidential under a cloak of anonymity after Tuesday's members vote dealt a fatal blow for plans to sell Rosehill, transform Warwick Farm and build a new racing and training centre at Penrith. 'What is the alternative funding model for the industry given wagering is in decline and the members have turned their back on $5bn? What is Plan B?'' the trainer said. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. The trainer maintains he is 'one of many' reluctant to talk on the record or risk losing stable clients because the Rosehill sale proposal has split Sydney racing, fractured friendships, and led to deep distrust on both sides of the argument. 'There has been a lot of misinformation through this whole debate,'' he said. The trainer became increasingly agitated the longer the conversation went and it was plainly obvious he had real concerns about his future and for many industry participants. It has been regrettable that the Rosehill sale issue seemed to drift away from being a robust debate on the merits of the proposal into attacks on key industry figures. Surely the time has come to put differences aside and start working collaboratively for the betterment of the sport. The Rosehill sale proposal has highlighted some of the long-term structural issues the racing industry must confront, notably improving club revenues, addressing wagering decline, and keeping the sport relevant for younger generations. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Star Sydney jockey Tyler Schiller was in good spirits on Thursday despite a serious back injury that will rule him out for six weeks. Schiller, who has ridden 49 winners to be fifth on the Sydney jockey premiership, has had another hugely successful season highlighted by his Group 1 wins on the Team Hawkes-trained Briasa (TJ Smith Stakes) and Nepotism (Champagne Stakes). Tommy Berry will replace Schiller on Gallo Nero for the Hawkes stable in the Group 1 BRC Sires and also on the Chris and Corey Munce-trained Payline in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Antino blitzes the field in Doomben Cup stunner

Antino has confirmed his status as one of the best horses in Australia with a breathtaking win in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m). Now a dual Group 1 winner, $3 favourite Antino was as impressive as his 6-½ length victory in last year's Toorak Handicap, Blake Shinn once again circling the field to score by four lengths over $8.50 chance Fawkner Park, with Kovalica ($7) just edging Militarize ($19) for third. Relishing the typically punishing tempo set by Pride Of Jenni, who was a noted betting drifter and a spent force early in the straight after being dug up to lead, Antino backed up his 3-½ length win in the Hollidale Stakes to confirm his position as one of the top horses in Australia. This was Tony Gollan's eighth career Group One win and third in his home state of Queensland, and 'special' was the word he felt best described the win. 'He's been the best horse I've trained for some time,' Gollan said. 'Took until last year to win the Toorak, win the Group One and from then, I think we've all just got better as a team, haven't we? We've done things better and he's gone to another level. 'What we've seen today is pretty special. It's a pretty good Doomben Cup field. He's won impressively and we can set our sights now on Melbourne in the spring. 'He's a very good horse, a world class jockey, and I've got a world class team to help me get him ready.' Now clearly proven over 2000m, targets don't come much bigger than the race Gollan has set his sights on, suggesting the Cox Plate would be his Spring goal. 'We'll put him away now for the Cox Plate. I think his style of racing, suits a race like that, that amphitheatre there, where they can build and build and build,' Gollan said. 'I just said to Blake today, I couldn't get him any better than what he is today and when it's time to go, he'll give it to you today. He's really spot on. 'At the Gold Coast he was a little bit soft. Today, he's rock fit and that's pretty impressive. That's as good a win as I've been involved in. It means a lot to the whole team.'

Melbourne Cup hero Without A Fight suddenly retires after trial race

Melbourne Cup winner Without A Fight — who was preparing for a winter campaign in Brisbane — has suddenly been retired. The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained import narrowly won a 1500m trial at Caulfield Heath on Thursday morning, but soon after the call was made to retire the gelding. Without A Fight was united with jockey Mark Zahra (who famously rode him at Flemington and Caulfield in 2023) at the trial yesterday. But it has been reported that he suffered a bleed afterwards which forced the trainers to take immediate action. Without A Fight won the 2023 Caulfield Cup–Melbourne Cup double to etch his name into racing history and, in a statement, Anthony and Sam Freedman said it had been a privilege to train the gelding for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum. Having started his career in the UK with Simon and Ed Crisford, Without A Fight came to Australia to run in the 2022 Melbourne Cup, finishing 13th behind Gold Trip. Left in the care of the father-and-son Freedman training duo, Without A Fight won the Group 3 Lord Mayor's Cup and Group 2 Q22, both at Eagle Farm, the following winter before embarking on his successful 2023 spring campaign that saw him complete the Cups double. Without A Fight spent the majority of 2024 on the sidelines following a tendon injury, returning for a third-place finish behind Via Sistina in the Group 1 Champions Stakes at Flemington last November before a trip to Hong Kong that saw the gelding beat one runner home in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) the following month, his final race start. Thursday's trial at Caulfield Heath had been in preparation for a trip to Brisbane where Without A Fight held an entry in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on Saturday week. 'He has been an absolute gentleman to have in the stable and will be remembered as one of the finest stayers of his generation,' the Freedman's said in a statement. 'His Cups double not only delivered the pinnacle of our training careers but also created unforgettable memories for all involved – from our dedicated track riders, stable hands, vets, farriers, to those at the spelling farms. 'He has left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to be a part of his journey. 'We extend our heartfelt thanks to his owner, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, for entrusting us with the privilege of training such a remarkable horse in Australia. We are truly indebted to him for the opportunity. 'As Without A Fight begins the next chapter of his life, we wish him the very best in his retirement. 'He has given us all so much – and for that, we are forever grateful.' It is a sad and unceremonious end to a spectacular career. The news also left racing fans with a heavy heart. 'Sad news, dead set superstar in his prime,' one fan said on social media. And another: 'Sad how it all ended. Tarnished his legacy.' Without A Fight retires having registered 11 wins from his 24 starts with career prize money of just over $9.7 million.
