Reserve Bank skyrockets in value as Jamie Melham claims back-to-back wins in The Goodwood

Gun colt Reserve Bank charged home to claim Saturday's $1m The Goodwood at Morphettville, notching a fourth win in Adelaide's premier sprint for astute trainer Mick Price. It saw star jockey Jamie Melham nailed another homecoming mission, settling off the pace aboard Reserve Bank ($5.50), before splitting the middle of the field at the 200m, on her way to a brilliant one-length win. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'I was a bit concerned in the run where he was, I did say to her (Jamie), 'he's a nice, flow along sort of horse, he doesn't like the mixed messages and don't drag him back'. 'I'm sure he was out the back, but thankfully they ran along and he was allowed to use his big stride late and he took off. 'I can only say he's a very good colt, and he's won a Group 1.' Group 1 glory secured a hat-trick of wins for Reserve Bank, a three-year-old son of Capitalist, who has now won five from nine starts. Melham admitted that the 1200m race threatened to go pear-shaped early, but it eventually mapped out perfectly. 'Nothing went to plan, he reared out the gates, missed the start, but I just got a dream run, I got a beautiful run in the end,' Melham said. 'Giga Kick was on our outside, I thought if I drag back now and get on his backside, he's going to be too sharp. 'We just rode for luck, the gaps came, I was just a passenger, Mick has this horse absolutely flying, it was a very impressive win.' Jamie Melham celebrates winning The Goodwood aboard Reserve Bank. Picture: Makoto Kaneko The win saw Melham defend her Goodwood crown, the hoop won last year's sprint aboard Benedetta. 'I thought, I can't leave Adelaide without getting another Group 1,' she said. 'It's a very special race to win, and nothing's like winning a race back home in Adelaide, my aunty is here, aunty Jan, my family are here – it's very special.' Local galloper Sir Sway ($61) ran the race of his life to finish second for trainers Sue and Jason Jaensch, while Everest-winning sprinter Giga Kick, a $2.05 favourite, was honest first-up, hitting the line strongly out wide for third. Post-race jockey reports from the 2025 The Goodwood

Reserve Bank's affinity with Adelaide continued when defeating the older horses in the $1 million Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday. Reserve Bank made it three consecutive South Australian wins when coming from back in the field, surging through the ruck in the straight to defeat local galloper Sir Sway and short favourite Giga Kick in third. "RESERVE BANK IS ON THE SCENE!" Jamie Melham has gone back-to-back in The Goodwood with Reserve Bank bounding down the middle of the track! @jamieleekah07 @MickPriceRacing — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) May 10, 2025 Reserve Bank's win was the first time this season a three-year-old colt claimed a Group 1 win in open age company. A son of Capitalist, the win was Reserve Bank's fifth from 11 starts, taking his earnings to more than $980,000. Reserve Bank gave his trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent (Jnr) their second Group 1 win of the South Australian autumn carnival. Jamie Melham was the winning rider. This is what the riders thought of their mount's performance in The Goodwood. 1st - RESERVE BANK (Jamie Melham) Nothing went to plan. He reared out the gates, missed the start, but I just got a dream run. I got a beautiful run in the end. Giga Kick was on our outside, and I thought if I drag back now and get on his backside, he's going to be too sharp. So we just rode for luck. The gaps came and I was just a passenger. Mick's (Price) got this horse absolutely flying. That was a very impressive win. 2nd - SIR SWAY (Jake Toeroek) Super run. You can't be disappointed with that. He's run out of his skin and tried his guts out and the connections are really happy. 3rd - GIGA KICK (Mark Zahra) He ran well. From the barrier we had to settle back. The jockeys in front of me got into a bit of a tussle and I had to swing wider than I wanted but he got to the line nicely. 4th - AMEENA (Dean Yendall) Had a nice run and settled really well. Just got carted off onto Anzac Highway on the turn which didn't help and lost a few lengths which didn't help being taken off her line. The straight is better out there, so I wasn't too bothered but she still finished off well. 5th - GENEROSITY (Lucy Fiore) Super run. I had a really nice run in transit, maybe not in the best part of the track late. 6th - CLIMBING STAR (Thomas Stockdale) I didn't expect her to lead. The speed horses were nowhere to be found on jumping away. She's a horse that needs to smooth, so it's not ideal leading, but that's where we were and what we had to deal with. She gave a nice shout for the run that she had. 7th - WATCHME WIN (Jason Holder) He travelled really well in the run. He had the same sort of run as when he run. He stopped pretty quick with the 56.5 (kg). He's probably better weighted a bit lower. 8th - PRAIRIE FLOWER (Will Price) She ran enormous. She was a little bit tardy away. She got in a good spot and always travelled well. She quickened up with the field but she probably just lacks that class, but she ran really honestly. 9th - SGHIRRIPA (Ben Price) Honest run. Unfortunately he made a bit of a meal of it at the start and I would have loved to have dictated as they did. They probably outsprinted him from the 600 (metres) but I thought he was good to the line. 10th - VOLCANIC EXPRESS (Justin Potter) He ran good. He settled back and probably a little more speed would have suited him better. He probably 12 months away from a good race like that, but he tried hard. 11th - STRETAN ANGEL (Lachlan Neindorf) She a tired horse. She's ready to go to the paddock and freshen up a bit. She just lacked that spark. 12th - PRESS DOWN (Rochelle Milnes (a)) They were a class above him today.

Giga Kick is Good to go

On weights and measures alone, Giga Kick should street his 12 rivals in the A$1 million (S$833,000) Group 1 The Goodwood (1,200m) at Morphettville on May 10. With a top rating of 116, and Charm Stone the next best on 108, he should be the top-weight and give 4kg or more to the rest. But The Goodwood is a set-weights race where the handicapper sifts through performances in the last two years. As awesome as his second at his penultimate start in the 2024 The Everest (1,200m) was, the lightly raced chestnut has not won since the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1,200m) in May 2023, when his rating peaked to 117. The Scissor Kick five-year-old's next five starts have not been without merit. Trainer Clayton Douglas' seven-time winner never finished worse than three lengths off, with his head-second to Bella Nipotina in The Everest prompting the handicapper to shave only one point off his rating. But six months have elapsed since his last outing - a 2.4-length seventh in the Group 1 Champions Sprint (1,200m) at Flemington on Nov 9. The 2022 Everest winner's rustiness could offset the 55kg (Mark Zahra will ride him ½kg over), but three solid barrier trials have topped him off nicely. Gate 12 is also tricky, but Morphettville's wide straight gives horses ample time to find room. On class, Giga Kick should win, but do not ignore the in-form Reserve Bank, last year's runner-up Stretan Angel and last-start Group 1 Robert Sangster (1,200m) winner Charm Stone. manyan@

Everest winner Giga Kick poised to let fly in The Goodwood

The Everest-winning Giga Kick has The Goodwood at his mercy with Mornington trainer Clayton Douglas delighted with his two-time Group 1 winner ahead of the $1 million sprint at Morphettville on Saturday. The brilliant sprinter, which won the 2022 The Everest, headlines a field of 13 on Saturday, and will be the star attraction on the final day of the Adelaide Racing Carnival. Years gone by has seen The Goodwood (1200m) lure stars of the turf such as Takeover Target (2009) and Black Caviar (2012) to Morphettville, yet Giga Kick, with almost $13 million in career earnings, will be the highest earning horse to ever race in Adelaide. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The son of Scissor Kick enters Saturday's race first-up, six months between runs, and Douglas is confident he's ready to fly as a $2.20 favourite. 'I'm very happy with him, he obviously travelled over Wednesday,' Douglas said. 'I had a little trot and canter at Morphettville with him Thursday, and I'm very pleased with how he is. 'He had a nice gallop on the course proper at Mornington before he left, I thought he worked very well. 'Saturday's race looks like a really nice race for him, he's quite a seasoned traveller now. 'He's had three trials to get ready for this race – I'm looking forward to it.' Giga Kick wins the All Aged Stakes at Randwick in 2023. Picture: Bradley Photos READ: Bedggood hoping extra trip brings change in Fortune The Goodwood appeared the ideal kick-starter for Giga Kick, his weight of 54.5kg the lightest impost the gelding has carried since the Champions Sprint in 2022. 'Obviously with the weight relief he gets, through the set weights and penalties (it appealed),' he said. 'With the weight-for-age scale he would've got 58.5kg, just because he's a horse that hasn't won for a while he's missed the penalty. 'Getting in at 54.5kg, it's a very nice weight for him, for a horse that's won an Everest, and a big track like Morphettville should suit him.' Giga Kick has two wins from five starts first-up, and will be piloted by Melbourne Cup-winning hoop Mark Zahra, who has had a brilliant Adelaide Carnival, winning the Australasian Oaks and Robert Sangster Stakes already. Picture: Racing SA READ: Mate's success drives Price to pull off Goodwood upset Giga Kick has drawn barrier 12, and Douglas is optimistic the wide gate can work in their favour. 'They've been getting away from the rail I've noticed in the last few weeks, with a bit of racing, probably from his draw as well, it might suit him,' he said. 'It looks like they've been running on down the middle, I would suspect that's where he'll be, and hopefully he can be doing that Saturday. 'He will probably get that nice run, off the speed, travelling comfortably, hopefully somewhere wide with cover, and he can be blending in from there. 'When he's on, he's been an amazing horse to watch, what he did in an Everest as a three-year-old, he won an All Aged Stakes, beating some top class horses from a wide alley, from that wide gate I don't think it should be a problem.' There will be plenty of excitement trackside when Giga Kick steps out on Saturday, a win in The Goodwood would add another chapter to what has been a journey of a lifetime for Douglas. 'It's a lot for someone like me to have a good horse like him,' Douglas said. 'He's such a well-credentialed horse, he's done so much for my career, as long as I'm ticking all the boxes and doing everything right by him I'm sure he'll keep repaying me.'
