Sheriff: Elmira sex offender arrested for failure to update registry
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – An Elmira man has been arrested after officials say he failed to update his sex offender registry before the deadline.
Gregory S. Scears, 35, was arrested on the charge of failure to notify the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services of a change of information within the required timeframe, a class E felony, as stated in a release from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say Scears was charged with the crime after the Chemung County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division was provided information and evidence from the NYS Division of Parole that Scears, who is a level two sex offender, had failed to update his sex offender registry.
Specifically, officials say Scears failed to notify the NYS Sex Offender Registry that he had changed his internet and social media accounts, which is required by NYS Corrections Law. Officials say this offense also violated his conditions of release.

Following an investigation into the incident, officials say Scears was arrested on the charge and placed in the Chemung County Jail for violating his conditions of release.

NYSP issues reminder after trooper's vehicle hit by passing car
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) — A New York State Police car was damaged on Wednesday afternoon after a trooper was trying to get rid of debris on the highway in Horseheads, according to a release from New York State Police. A trooper out of the Horseheads state police barracks was driving a marked state police vehicle on Interstate 86 eastbound near Exit 54 (SR 13/Ithaca) in Horseheads, around 1:23 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, the release explained. Debris of significant size was noticed on the road, the release pointed out. As a result, NYSP said the trooper then parked on the south shoulder and got out of his vehicle to remove said debris from the highway in the left passing lane. Three NYSDOT workers struck during Route 36 crash in Hornellsville NYSP emphasized that when the trooper was outside the patrol car, a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica traveling eastbound sideswiped the parked patrol car after it hit another vehicle and lost control, which caused property damage. The trooper was not injured during this incident because he wasn't in the vehicle, NYSP explained, the driver of the Pacifica had minor injuries but denied treatment at the scene. Second civil suit involving sex offender at Greenwood daycare resolved
GREENWOOD, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The second of two lawsuits involving a convicted sex offender from Hackett and a Greenwood preschool has been dismissed, according to court documents. Jamie Speaks, 56, was convicted of second-degree sexual assault on April 14 and sentenced to 18 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections with 12 years suspended. The Arkansas Crime Information Center's Sex Offender Registry database shows Speaks is a level two sex offender. Court documents say Speaks sexually assaulted a child at a daycare when they were two years old. In addition to Speaks' criminal case, he was named in two civil lawsuits against Miss Tina's Preschool in Greenwood that were filed in December 2023 and January 2024. However, both have been resolved, one in January and the other in May. The lawsuits accused the preschool of knowingly allowing a convicted child predator to be around children at the school, which reportedly led to long-term sexual abuse. The lawsuits said Speaks was charged in 1993 with molesting a seven-year-old who was in his care and his wife at their at-home daycare. His wife closed the daycare in 1994 after the incident and was later hired at Miss Tina's, according to the lawsuit. Tina Skaggs, the owner of the preschool, allegedly knew of Speaks' criminal history when she hired his wife and allowed him to spend time at the preschool despite his convictions and sex offender status, the lawsuit said. In the lawsuit, Skaggs denied the assertion that Speaks was 'frequently and consistently present' during the time of his wife's employment at the preschool. She also denied being aware that Speaks was left unsupervised with children and taking them into the bathroom. (WETM) — An Elmira man, currently being held at the Chemung County Jail, was arrested back in June after deputies said he failed to update his address on the sex offender registry. Alonzo K. Roberson, 42, was arrested on Tuesday, June 10, on the charge of failure to notify the Division of Criminal Justice Services of a change of information within a required timeframe, a class D felony. NYSP: Man facing grand larceny charge after stealing over $90K from parents Back on May 8, the Chemung County Sheriff's Office was given information by the New York State Division of Parole stating Roberson, who is a level 3 registered sex offender, failed to update his address with the NYS Sex Offender Registry.
