Stuart Broad advises against playing Jofra Archer in Oval Test, backs Atkinson as England, India battle injuries

Indian Express2 days ago
With the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on the line, India and England head to London for the fifth and last Test of the five-match Test series, set to start from Thursday, July 31. Both teams will need to address multiple injury concerns ahead of the fifth Test, where the turnaround time is the lowest in the two-month tour.
For India, the headache is much bigger with Rishabh Pant fracturing his toe during the Manchester Test. Pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh are injured, Jasprit Bumrah has to manage his workload, and it's uncertain whether he will play the Oval Test or not. England, too, will be worried for their pace attack which has seen Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Ben Stokes bowling relentlessly for the four Tests on the bounce.
But the biggest concern would be whether to play Jofra Archer in the Oval Test or not. Archer made his red-ball comeback for the national side after more than four years after persistent injuries and played the last two Tests for England in the series. Former England cricketer Stuart Broad feels Archer should not feature in the final Test and should be rested.
'We can't not have Archer for four years, bring him back and then bowl him into the ground and not see him for another four years,' said Broad to Sky Sports.
'(Josh) Tongue started the series, and I know he mainly got lower-order players out, but you probably have a natural replacement for Archer,' he added on the potential replacement for Archer.
Broad also said Gus Atkinson should make it into the England XI in place of Carse.
'I think Gus Atkinson has to play. I know he has not had any workload, but we need to see him. He hasn't been really challenged against top-level opposition in Test cricket yet. (Brydon) Carse looked knackered in the fourth Test. He has been a trier and given absolutely everything, but looks like his legs have left him for this series, so Atkinson gets the nod,' he said.

Images: Reuters Kuldeep Yadav is set to be ignored again and Karun Nair may get one more chance in the fifth and final India vs England Test at The Oval that starts on Thursday (31 July), a report states. We reported earlier that Jasprit Bumrah would be sitting out, as a decision has been made collectively by the player, selectors, and India management to prioritise his workload. And while Akash Deep, who is now fit after missing the fourth Test due to a back issue, would be replacing Bumrah in the playing XI, India are also set to make some other big bang changes. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Many fans and experts hoped, coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill would be leaning towards spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the absence of Bumrah, as they would need a genuine wicket-taker in the team. India trail 2-1 in the five-match series and The Oval Test is their final opportunity to level the score. Karun Nair set for comeback; Kuldeep to miss out again However, a report in the Indian Express on Thursday has claimed that it will be Karun Nair who will come into the playing XI as a replacement for Shardul Thakur and not Kuldeep. This means India would be sticking to their policy to have at least eight batters in the line-up. Another Lifeline For Karun Nair? Big Changes For 5th Test As India Set To Drop...

Last Updated: India plan to bolster their batting for the final Test against England at The Oval with Karun Nair expected to make his return. India are reportedly turning to a similar team combination that gave them their solitary Test win of the ongoing England tour at Edgbaston earlier this month. The Shubman Gill-led side is trailing 1-2 in the five-match series with the final contest set to be played at The Oval from Thursday (July 31). According to a report in The Indian Express, Karun Nair is set to return to the playing XI after being benched for the Manchester Test which ended in a draw. The top-order batter has been struggling to convert his starts after making his Test return in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The report states that India are looking to strengthen their batting order for the series-decider which they must win to ensure parity. With the pitch at The Oval having a layer of grass on the match eve, the team management could add an extra batter in Nair. Shardul To Be Dropped? If Nair gets a look in, allrounder Shardul Thakur will likely get the axe due to his unimpressive bowling in the 4th Test. Nair has scored 131 runs from six innings on the tour so far while averaging 21.83 with a best of 40. The fifth Test could be another lifeline for him to keep his place in the Test squad. Nair made his much-awaited India return during the 2nd Test, replacing B Sai Sudharsan who was consigned to the bench after an unremarkable debut in Leeds. However, this time around, both are expected to keep their spots. Should the fifth Test be played on a green pitch, left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav may have to return to India without playing a single game on the tour. India have not ruled out Jasprit Bumrah's inclusion for the fifth Test despite him already playing three matches as per his workload plan. Should he sit out, Akash Deep could make his return alongside Prasidh Krishna, the report states. In that scenario, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh will have to wait longer for his Test debut. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India vs England 5th Test, London weather forecast: Rain set to stir things up after fiery pre-match drama at The Oval

India and England head into the final clash of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with the hosts leading 2-1, and the visitors desperate to square things up. The fifth and final Test begins on Thursday (July 31) at The Oval, where Shubman Gill's men will ride the momentum of a resilient comeback in Manchester. London: The Oval cricket ground ahead of the fifth Test cricket match between India and England, in London(PTI) However, the weather could disrupt the series decider. According to AccuWeather, Thursday could begin under gloomy skies with a chance of afternoon showers, with thunderstorms predicted between 3-5 PM. Early morning showers are also predicted, which can delay the toss. Rain is also predicted on Friday, with gloomy skies on Day 3. The UK Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms on Thursday, too. With an 80% chance of rain just before and at the scheduled start, a delayed toss now looks likely. The downpour isn't expected to relent either; forecasts predict a persistent 70-80% rain threat through most of the day, with conditions likely to ease only towards stumps. India have lost all four tosses in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy so far, and the weather conditions will be one of the key indicators in dictating the decision at the toss. With no margin for error, India are expected to go full tilt for a win to level the series. The team's character at Old Trafford has set up a fitting finale at The Ova, where not just the weather, but temperament and timing, may hold the key. A resilient fightback India were staring at defeat for large parts of the fourth Test after conceding a 311-run first-innings lead and losing both openers without a run on board in their second innings. England had piled on 669 after bowling India out for 358, and the game seemed to be slipping away within four days. But the visitors produced one of their most determined batting efforts overseas to defy the odds and walk away with a draw that keeps the series alive. KL Rahul (90) and Gill (103) stitched together a gritty partnership to steady the innings on the fourth evening, ensuring no further damage before stumps. On the final day, Ravindra Jadeja (107*) and Washington Sundar (101*) displayed remarkable composure and class to bat India to safety with unbeaten centuries. India will take heart from that performance heading into the final Test. The Oval surface has traditionally offered plenty to batters, especially in the first two innings. A recent County Championship fixture saw both sides amass close to 1500 runs, and the average first-innings total at the venue stands at 343.
