Matrade supports RM2.1tri export target by 2030

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) supports the country's gross export growth target, averaging 5.8 per cent annually, to reach RM2.09 trillion by 2030.
In a statement today, it said it will continue to play a strategic role in expanding global trade networks and intensifying export promotion in high-impact sectors aligned with MADANI economic principles.
Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the agency's initiatives will be coordinated to support the government's aspirations under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
"Priority will be given to strengthening the nation's export competitiveness by empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), exploring new markets, enhancing product innovation, and adapting to an increasingly complex and challenging global trade landscape by embracing digital and sustainable business models."
"These efforts align with the 13MP's aspirations, which emphasise the importance of driving economic growth via increasing exports, strengthening economic inclusivity, and incorporating technology and innovation in strategic sectors," he said.
Meanwhile, Matrade chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz said the export promotion programme focuses on key sectors such as electrical and electronic goods, halal, digital, agriculture, franchised products, and services.
"These efforts also leverage Magtrade's network of overseas offices to help Malaysian companies effectively foray into international markets," he added.
According to Matrade, expanding export matching programmes, foreign market guidance, and the provision of capacity-building programmes such as seminars, workshops, and related courses will be implemented for MSMEs.
It will also take strategic steps in planning export development and promotion programmes that align with government aspirations, particularly in developing high-growth, high-value industries. These include the electrical and electronics sector, games and digital animation, halal products, modern agriculture, global services and franchising.
"MATRADE will focus on exploring new high-potential markets such as South America, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, involving more participation in free trade agreements, business matching programmes and export acceleration missions.
"The introduction of the National Trade Blueprint 2.0 will serve as a new strategic roadmap document to coordinate policies, enhance implementation efficiency, and strengthen the export ecosystem," he said.

Singapore's Temasek-backed entity to acquire 16pct stake in Ayala's healthcare arm

KUALA LUMPUR: AC Health, the healthcare arm of the Philippines' oldest conglomerate Ayala Corp, said on Monday that a private equity firm backed by Singapore's state-investor Temasek will acquire a 16 per cent minority stake in the company. In August 2024, Reuters reported that the Ayala Corp was keen on selling a minority stake in its healthcare business, which would value the company at up to US$500 million. AC Health did not specify a value for the 16 per cent stake. Global investors are increasingly drawn to Southeast Asia's healthcare sector, wagering on the region's rising prosperity, aging demographics, and the industry's resilience in a challenging economic climate. In November 2023, Malaysian conglomerate Sime Darby and Australia's Ramsay Health Care agreed to sell their equal ownership joint venture for 5.7 billion ringgit (US$1.34 billion). Established in 2015, AC Health has expanded its portfolio to include the Generika and St. Joseph Drug pharmacy chains, as well as pharmaceutical importer and distributor IE Medica and MedEthix, according to its websites. It aims to expand its network to at least 10 hospitals, 300 clinics and 1,150 pharmacies.

Strengthen digital creative industries

In a recent announcement, Burhanuddin Md Radzi, the founder of Les' Copaque Production, the studio behind the animated series 'Upin & Ipin', lauded the government's introduction of a Matching Fund and a Joint Production Fund. These initiatives, he believes, will strengthen talent development and encourage investment in creating world-class content. Burhanuddin welcomed the government's recognition of the creative industry as a high-return sector. "Companies are grateful that the creative industry is now seen as a sector capable of generating huge returns. "We welcome this government assistance and hope that these initiatives will be sustainable and effective." While appreciative, Burhanuddin also called for a more comprehensive long-term plan to support the industry. He believes the government should focus on the marketing and distribution of digital products created by local talent. He highlighted the reluctance of local television stations to air expensive animated shows in favour of syndicated content. "If local people produce digital content just for our market, it will be hard for them to survive. If we produce more content, where will we distribute and sell it?" He urged local creators to emulate his company's strategy: win over the domestic audience first before targeting international markets. "We have to become famous in our own country first, and then we can sell it abroad." This news follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's presentation of the 13th Malaysia Plan, where he announced the government's commitment to driving "orange economic" growth through the digital creative industry. Anwar revealed that the industry generates a total income of RM6.3 billion with an export value of RM850 million, and he cited successful animated productions like 'Mechamato' and 'Upin & Ipin' as proof of local talent's international acclaim.

Malaysia's distributive trade to benefit from July, Merdeka sales: CIMB

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's distributive trade is set to benefit from a full working month in July, Merdeka sales and policy measures aimed at boosting consumption, said CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd. The firm said the measures include a one-off RM100 cash credit for all Malaysian adults and three per cent lower subsidised fuel prices, which are cumulatively forecast to add 0.12 percentage points to real gross domestic product (GDP). Together with the recent 25 basis point cut in the overnight policy rate, these measures are anticipated to lift consumption in the September–December period. "The recent 25 basis point cut in the overnight policy rate (OPR) is anticipated to benefit the M40 and T20 households, helping to mitigate potential headwinds from US reciprocal tariffs. "The consumption-driven initiatives, concentrated in the September–December 2025 period, are expected to partly offset the hangover from front-loaded exports and tariff uncertainty. This should help to keep quarterly GDP growth above the 4.0 per cent level," it said. CIMB Securities maintains its 2025 GDP growth forecast at 4.3 per cent, supported by reduced US tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25 per cent to 19 per cent and domestic consumption initiatives. However, the firm said downside risks persist from the evolving trajectory of US trade policy, with its latest focus on semiconductors posing a significant threat to Malaysia's electrical and electronics (E&E) sector that represents about 6 per cent of GDP. For the second quarter (Q2), the firm estimates GDP growth at 4.4 per cent, slightly below the advance estimate of 4.5 per cent and matching the pace of the previous quarter. Distributive trade volume growth held steady at 4.3 per cent, while services growth eased to 5 per cent from 5.2 per cen. Industrial output slowed to 2 per cent from 2.3 per cent.
