Meet the Lochwinnoch Primary School pupil making kids feel less lonely

Glasgow Times26-05-2025

Annabelle - who attends Lochwinnoch Primary School - came up with the idea to create a bench where boys and girls who want someone to play with or talk to can sit down, prompting other kids to help out.
It blossomed into a meaningful new addition to the playground—a Buddy Bench.
Pictured sitting on the bench are Lochwinnoch pupils Annabelle (who had the idea for the bench) and Stanley, who designed the mural behind the bench. This special seat offers a welcoming space for any pupil who may be feeling a little lost or simply in need of a chat, with the hope being that classmates will recognise when someone takes a seat there and respond with kindness, offering friendship and support in a safe and caring environment.
Annabelle explained how she came up with the idea.
She said: "I came up with the idea because I think people are sometimes lonely, and it can be hard to ask someone if you can play.
"I thought the bench was a good idea so that if people are lonely, they can sit on this bench and people can come to you and see if you're ok."

Inspired by the idea, the school contacted St Andrew's High School in Paisley to see if their woodwork department could help bring the vision to life.
The woodwork group, led by lead technician Mr Dock, took on the project enthusiastically, first creating a model of the bench and then going on to build the final piece.
He said: "When I received the request for a bench from Annabelle, I though it was a lovely idea and decided to make it a pupil -based project.
I asked the first year woodwork club if they would be interested in making the bench and they loved the idea.
"We were very fortunate to receive the wood free from Express Timber Products in Paisley which meant we have been able to make a bench for both schools."
The bench was unveiled at Lochwinnoch Primary School (Image: Colin Mearns) The result is a beautifully crafted Buddy Bench, now proudly placed in the playground for all pupils to enjoy.
It has already begun to foster a sense of connection, kindness, and support among the students.
To enhance the area even further, another talented primary six pupil, Stanley, designed a vibrant mural that now sits behind the bench.
He hopes it will help kids make friends if they are struggling.
Stanley said: "I thought it would be a cool idea to think about nature and the outdoors in Lochwinnoch because we have lots of outdoor spaces and the animals should be able to thrive.
"I hope it encourages people to make new friends and socialise."
Mhairi Peden, head teacher, added: "This project has been a wonderful example of the power of pupil voice, collaboration, and community spirit
"The school extends a heartfelt thank you to St Andrew's High School for their fantastic work and support—and to the pupils whose creativity and care helped bring this project to life."

BREAKING NEWS Mystery as small unexpected US town is rattled by dozens of earthquakes overnight

A small town in Idaho has been rattled by more than 35 earthquakes in just 24 hours. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the swarm near Stanley, a town of fewer than 150 people perched along a fault line capable of producing major quakes. The latest tremor, a 3.5 magnitude, hit at 9:48am PT (12:48pm ET) on Wednesday. Stanley sits near the Sawtooth Fault, a 40-mile-long fault line running through central Idaho. While geologically ancient, the Sawtooth Fault was only clearly identified in 2010. It drew national attention after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck in 2020, one of the largest in Idaho's recent history, which was felt across several states. Experts have called the Sawtooth Fault a 'sleeping giant' as it is dormant for long periods but capable of triggering a devastating earthquake when it awakens. This week's constant wave of seismic activity in the same area is 'unusual' and concerning to Idaho state geologist Claudio Berti, who said it's unclear what's going to happen next. This is a developing story... More updates to come The earthquakes detected overnight range from 1.9 magnitude to 4.0 magnitude. While earthquakes above a 2.5 magnitude can be felt, this region of Idaho is sparsely populated. Only dozens of people reported shaking in the last 24 hours.

'Drunk' man kicked off plane for 'vomiting on passenger' before 13-hour flight

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video We all have our pet peeves when it comes to flying. Kids kicking the back of your seat the whole way, the person next to you coughing and spluttering everywhere, the person who decides to watch their film without headphones. Spare a thought for the passenger on this EVA Air flight who would have been thanking his lucky stars for dodging all that. That is until the guy sitting behind got up and vomited on him moments before they were due to take off on a 13-hour trip from Taiwan to Austria. Footage taken inside the cabin on May 25 shows the culprit looking worse for wear while still leaning on the seat in front as crew members surround him. One can be see trying to lift him from his seat while colleagues remove his rucksack. Other passengers reported spotting an empty bottle of whisky. One told local media: 'The cabin door was already closed, and then that person started vomiting. 'There was an older man on his right, and when he saw him vomiting, he immediately stood up. 'The flight attendants later helped move that older man's seat, but that whole row was then blocked off and no one could sit there.' Staff made the man disembark so they could clean the seat. The flight was able to depart, but only after a delay of about half an hour, as reported by What's The Jam. More Trending Pilots made up for the lost time en route and the flight landed in Vienna, Austria, on time. The witness recalled: 'It smelt heavily of ginger duck with lots of alcohol. 'He probably drank it before boarding. 'His friend wasn't asked to get off, only he himself was removed.' Can dolls really be haunted? And did the infamous Annabelle lead a jailbreak in New Orleans?

Name: Annabelle. Age: She first surfaced in 1970, though she's a Raggedy Ann doll, a type that was first patented in 1915, so she could be as old as 110. Appearance: Cloth body, red woolly hair, stripy stockings, big eyes, fixed grin. Just a normal rag doll. Nothing to see here. If there's nothing to see, why are we talking about her? Because there happened to be a large fire and a jailbreak in New Orleans while 'one of the most infamous dolls on the planet' was in town. Reports of Annabelle going missing and causing 'local disasters' while on tour in May have been proliferating online. Chicago was bracing itself last week after rumours she was coming for them next. Hang on, hang on. 'Infamous'? 'Disasters'? Explain yourself. Annabelle is haunted, probably cursed. Given to a Connecticut nurse in 1970, she soon started moving around, leaving notes and inflicting 'psychic slashes' on visitors. Passive-aggressive, huh? I've had roommates like that. Well, the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren concluded Annabelle was demonically possessed and removed her to their museum. 'Allegedly linked to decades of deaths and grisly paranormal activity,' according to NBC, she has subsequently inspired three films in The Conjuring horror franchise (Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation and Annabelle Comes Home). I like the 'allegedly' there, as if she may be litigious. Look at her: she'd absolutely take you to the cleaners. So this Annabelle doll recently went walkabout and bad stuff happened? According to the New England Society for Psychic Research, who organised her tour (called Devils on the Run), Annabelle did not go missing in New Orleans, and she was never in Chicago at all. 'That doll was never out of our sight, never out of our control,' her handler, Tony Spera, confirmed. She remained in her case, which is 'usually secured by crosses and holy water'. It's fake news, then? Or possibly viral marketing, but social media users aren't buying it. 'Ed and Lorraine told y'all to keep her locked up,' one wrote on the Facebook page for Ghost City Tours, which hosted Annabelle in New Orleans. 'Nobody listened. Look at the aftermath.' TikTok users freaked out at the idea she was missing, and questioned why Annabelle was 'on tour' at all: 'Is she about to drop her first single, I love Satan and killing babies???' This is just silly, isn't it? Haunted dolls aren't real. Ebay users would beg to differ: there's a buoyant market for them, everything from 'positive, beginner-friendly' Gemma to Vicky, 'a particularly horrid spirit' who hides the TV remote and 'doesn't like men at all'. Again, I've had roommates like that. There are other celebrity haunted dolls, too: sailor-suited Robert, who lives in Florida and inflicts 'post-visit misfortunes' on disrespectful guests; and Okiku, who is possessed by a dead child and has hair that keeps growing. But Annabelle is the most powerful and we should respect her. Annabelle's making you say that, isn't she? Blink twice for yes. Shh, she'll hear you! Do say: 'Annabelle can't hurt you.' Don't say: 'Got myself a cryin', walkin', jail-breakin', murderin', haunted doll.'
