US confirms death of an American in West Bank; family blames Israeli settler arson

Al Arabiya4 days ago
The US State Department on Sunday confirmed an American citizen had died this week in the West Bank, with family and Palestinian officials attributing his death to arson by Israeli settlers.
The Palestinian Authority and witnesses reported on Thursday that Israeli settlers had set fire to homes and cars in the West Bank village of Silwad, the latest attack in the occupied territory.
Khamis Ayyad, 41, died from smoke inhalation due to the fires, the Palestinian health ministry said.
Speaking Friday at a press conference in Chicago, Ayyad's family said he had moved to the West Bank several years ago with his wife and children, but continued to work for an American company.
He is at least the second American citizen killed in West Bank settler violence in July, after a 20-year-old man was beaten to death while visiting family in the town of Sinjil.
Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, demanded Israel investigate that killing, calling it a 'criminal and terrorist act,' but has yet to comment on the death of Ayyad.
Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said 'several suspects ... set fire to property and vehicles in the Silwad area,' but forces dispatched to the scene were unable to identify them.
It added that Israeli police had launched an investigation.
Asked for comment on the latest death, a State Department spokesperson said 'we can confirm the death of a US citizen in the town of Silwad in the West Bank,' without naming Ayyad.
'We condemn criminal violence by any party in the West Bank,' the spokesperson said, on condition of anonymity.
The West Bank is home to some three million Palestinians, who live alongside about 500,000 Israeli settlers.
Violence in the territory has surged throughout the Gaza war triggered by Hamas' October 2023 attack on Israel.

Exclusive Lebanese president: State-exclusive control over weapons difficult but will be achieved

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun affirmed on Thursday that all weapons will be placed under the control of the state. This comes as authorities push the Lebanese group Hezbollah to hand over its arms. Speaking to Al Arabiya, Aoun said, 'Exclusive control of weapons will be achieved despite the difficulties and obstacles,' adding that the Lebanese authorities are awaiting 'the Lebanese army's plan to monopolize weapons so it can be discussed and approved.' The Lebanese president added that today's cabinet session 'will continue to take the long-awaited decisions regarding the exclusivity of arms,' and confirmed he is moving 'full speed ahead' toward 'implementing the terms of the presidential oath and the ministerial statement.' Regarding relations with Israel and the proposals from US envoy Tom Barrack, Aoun said that 'Lebanon's implementation of the American proposal also requires approval from Syria and Israel, along with American and French guarantees.' The Lebanese president stressed that 'achieving the exclusive control of arms by the state does not undermine Lebanon's rights and sovereignty.' This comes as Hezbollah announced on Wednesday that it would treat the Lebanese government's decision to disarm it 'as if it does not exist,' accusing the government of committing a 'grave sin' – one day after the government tasked the army with drafting a disarmament plan before the end of the year.

Man executed by Iran for nuclear espionage was nuclear scientist: State media

Rouzbeh Vadi, who state media said was executed on Wednesday for giving information on Iran's nuclear program to Israel's Mossad spy agency, was himself a nuclear scientist, state broadcaster IRIB said on Thursday. The judiciary's news outlet Mizan had said on Wednesday that Vadi was convicted of spying for Israel and passing on information about a nuclear scientist killed in Israel's June air strikes on the Islamic Republic. 'Key facilities were Fordow and Natanz (uranium enrichment plants), for which I sent information. I told them I knew this and that about Fordow, they (Mossad agent) told me to send everything,' Vadi said in what IRIB described as a confession video it ran on the air. 'The entry and exit of nuclear material into the Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) and Fuel Manufacturing Plant (FMP) were very important to them,' Vadi, who held a PhD in nuclear engineering from Amir Kabir University of Technology, added. A voiceover in the video said that Vadi met five times with Mossad agents while in Vienna and was asked to open a cryptocurrency account to receive payment for his services. The defendant said in the video that Mossad had promised him a foreign passport should he complete a long-term collaboration. IRIB on Thursday shared a screenshot of an academic paper presented at an Iranian nuclear conference in 2012 that was written by Vadi as well as Ahmad Zolfaqar and Abdolhamid Minouchehr - two nuclear scientists killed in June by Israel. In the document, Vadi is introduced as a nuclear researcher at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, the country's top nuclear body. Executions of Iranians convicted of spying for Israel have significantly increased this year, with at least eight death sentences carried out in recent months. Israel carried out 12 days of air strikes in June, targeting Iran's top generals, nuclear scientists and sensitive nuclear installations. Iran retaliated with barrages of missiles and drones at Israel.
