Judge: Sterling teen accused in July 2024 double shooting to be transferred to Whiteside County Jail
Apr. 3—MORRISON — A Sterling teenager charged with two counts of attempted murder will be transferred next month from the juvenile detention center where he currently is being held to the Whiteside County Jail.
Michael W.T. Bennett Jr. will be moved from the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles to the Whiteside County Jail in Morrison on May 17, the day he turns 18.
He will continue to remain detained based on a ruling Thursday, April 3, by Whiteside County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Rangel-Kelly. Rangel-Kelly made that decision after Whiteside County Public Defender Dana McCormick requested Bennett be released on authorized home detention. Rangel-Kelly also denied his release during a hearing last week.
Bennett's jury trial is tentatively set for June 17, with a pretrial conference scheduled for May 28.
Bennett was charged in September in adult court with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count each of aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm in a July shooting that injured two teens, according to Whiteside County court documents.
One count of use of a stolen firearm in the commission of an offense was added to the list of charges in December.
Bennett has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The shooting happened about 6 p.m. July 23 in the area of 13th Avenue and East Fifth Street in Sterling. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the head, and a 14-year-old boy was struck in the leg, according to court documents. Officers said the two injured teens were passengers in a vehicle that was fired upon, resulting in the vehicle colliding with a utility pole.
The occupants of the two vehicles — the one from where police said the gun was fired and the other carrying the injured boys — are acquaintances, according to a Sterling Police Department news release issued shortly after the shooting.
Sterling police announced Sept. 11 that a juvenile taken into custody Sept. 9 had been charged with one count each of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.
The additional charges naming Bennett were filed Sept. 26. Charging documents indicate all of the charges could be tried in adult court because of the two charges that allege Bennett committed a battery with a firearm by shooting one victim in the head and the other in the leg. He is accused of gaining possession of the firearm — a Ruger 5.7 — the previous day, and knew that it was a stolen gun, according to court documents.
The one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm accuses him of shooting the Ruger within 1,000 feet of Lincoln Elementary School at 1501 E. Sixth St.
The attempted murder and aggravated battery charges are class X felonies that upon conviction carry possible enhanced prison sentences of 25 years to life; 85% of the sentence would have to be served.

Three people killed in crash on interstate in South Carolina, cops say
Three people were killed early Sunday morning in a crash on Interstate 85, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The three-vehicle collision happened at about 12:15 a.m. in Spartanburg County, said Master Trooper William Bennett. A 2015 Honda sedan was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-85, according to Bennett. At the 75 mile marker the Honda collided head-on with a 2019 Toyota sedan that was driving north on I-85, Bennett said. After that collision, the Honda then crashed into a 2024 Ford Expedition that was also heading north on the interstate, according to Bennett. The driver, who was the only person in the Honda, as well as both the driver and a passenger in the Toyota died at the scene, Bennett said. The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office has not publicly identified any of the victims. In addition to the Ford driver, there were five passengers in the SUV, but none of those occupants were hurt, according to Bennett. No other injuries were reported. There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt. Information about how the Honda came to be driving toward oncoming traffic on I-85 was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol. Through June 1, at least 316 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported. At least 38 people have died in Spartanburg County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 60 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported. That includes a fatal crash on Saturday afternoon. At about 1:50 p.m., both a 2007 Dodge Ram and a 2008 Yamaha motorcycle were driving north on S.C. 11, Bennett said. When the pickup truck turned left onto Cannon Ford Road it was hit on the driver's side by the motorcycle, according to Bennett. The motorcycle driver, who died at the scene, has not been publicly identified by the coroner's office. Bennett said the pickup driver, who was the only person in the truck, was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported. This crash also continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

New Jersey Man Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Heart Instruments
A New Jersey man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a pair of instruments from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Heart. Just days after the band offered a reward for the return of a custom guitar and mandolin they said were stolen from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on the night before they kicked off their An Evening With Heart summer tour on Saturday (May 31), the Associated Press reported on Thursday (June 5) that a Pleasantville, N.J. man has been taken into custody. Atlantic City police said surveillance video first led them to the 57-year-old suspect, who was allegedly seen on video walking through the city trying to sell the instruments. Authorities said that the man eventually succeeded in selling one, while the other is currently unaccounted for — at press time it was unclear which instrument was sold and which one was still missing.
