IPOH, June 12 — The Perak government will submit a proposal to the federal government to upgrade the East-West Highway (JRTB) linking Gerik and Jeli, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
He said the state government will also propose the development of a new alignment to replace the current route, which links Perak to the East Coast states.
'The matter (proposal to improve JRTB) was discussed during the state executive council meeting yesterday.
'I have asked Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (State Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport Committee chairman) to prepare the proposal,' he said, adding that he would also propose the matter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his working visit to Lumut this Sunday.
He spoke to reporters today after officiating the closing ceremony of Perak Export Day 2025, hosted by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, which was also attended by its chairman, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, here.
Elaborating, Saarani said JRTB has been out of concession for the past 40 years, adding that it is high time to conduct a more thorough review of the route.
'Parts of the road have worn down to the base, exposing the soil. Patching is no longer an option. That's why we've asked Datuk Seri Nizar to outline what needs to be done in terms of alignment, road widening, construction materials, and all necessary elements, including street lighting and road markings,' he said.
Meanwhile, Saarani said the state government will also propose the upgrading of Gerik Hospital, as well as increasing the number of related facilities and medical specialists along the route.
'In the event of a major incident, Gerik Hospital is insufficient to handle a large number of casualties. The federal government should also consider providing additional facilities such as mobile police stations or fire and rescue brigades along the JRTB route,' he said, adding that this is to ensure shorter response time.
On Monday, 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students were killed when a chartered bus travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a multi-purpose vehicle on the highway. — Bernama

Heads up, Penang motorists: Lane closures, new routes as The Light Interchange progresses

GEORGE TOWN, June 13 — IJM Land Berhad (IJM Land) today announced scheduled infrastructure works and updates on new road access as part of the advancement of The Light Interchange development here. In a statement, the developer of The Light Waterfront Penang stated that temporary lane closures, affecting the George Town-bound lanes of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, would be implemented from June 16 to 27, from 10 pm to 5 am, to facilitate the dismantling of the existing pedestrian bridge. '...works will be carried out during off-peak hours to minimise disruption. Road users are advised to follow traffic instructions and remain cautious when approaching the affected area,' read the statement. The developer will also open the elevated road from Jalan Tunku Kudin (Bayan Lepas-bound) to The Light Waterfront Penang, effective July 1, providing direct and seamless access for motorists travelling from the Green Lane area into The Light Waterfront Penang. IJM Land also announced the opening of a permanent exit road (Bayan Lepas-bound) from The Light Waterfront Penang, adding that the current temporary exit will be permanently closed. 'All necessary signage has been put in place to guide motorists through the new route,' it added. — Bernama

Toll collection begins June 13 for WCE Section 2 stretch linking Banting to SKVE, rates start from RM1.32

SHAH ALAM, June 13 — Toll collection for the Section 2 stretch of the West Coast Expressway (WCE), which connects the SAE Interchange (KESAS) to the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE) Interchange and the Banting Interchange, will commence at 12.01 am on Friday, June 13, 2025. WCE said toll collection for the 7.2-kilometre stretch, which has been toll-free since its official opening on Jan 22 by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, will be entirely electronic, utilising Touch 'n Go cards, SmartTAGs, and RFID technology. 'The toll rates and payment methods for Section 2 of the WCE are fully integrated via the SKVE through the Tanjung Dua Belas Interchange. 'The toll rates imposed take into account the entire journey of the users, including the portions on the SKVE,' the highway operator said, adding that toll charges will vary based on vehicle class and travel distance, ranging from RM1.32 to RM13.85. Highway users are advised to ensure that their e-wallets and Touch 'n Go cards have sufficient balance before starting their journey to avoid any inconvenience at toll plazas, WCE said. Further information regarding toll rates and payment methods can be found at the WCE website, the WCE App, the WCE Infoline at 1700 81 6600 and via email at [email protected]. The WCE spans 233 km from Banting, Selangor, to Taiping (Changkat Jering), Perak. Once fully completed, it will serve as a vital transportation corridor connecting towns along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. — Bernama
