
United Airlines CEO urges flyers to buy 'cheapest' tickets ever… but there's a catch
After tarmac construction delays, several well-documented traffic control outages, and a wave of cancellations, travelers have been avoiding Newark International Airport.
That chaos has unexpectedly created what Kirby is calling an affordable window to fly into the airport.
'Because we lost a lot of bookings, there's a lot more seats available,' Kirby said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
'It's going to be the cheapest it's probably ever going to be in history.'
Newark Airport, one of United's major US hubs, has quickly responded to safety concerns.
Airlines have cut back on their Newark-bound offerings and the US Department of Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, said officials are updating equipment to minimize risk.
Completion of a new communications line is expected by July.
In the meantime, Kirby and Duffy have both said it is safe to fly into Newark.
'Newark is safe,' Kirby said, while calling the customer hesitance a 'perception issue.'
United has cut back on 35 daily scheduled flights into its hub to help quell the traffic.
Still, the airport is facing massive staffing shortages, and air flight controllers have been publicly sounding the alarm about potential safety risks.
The warnings also come as Americans witnessed a series of deadly airline crashes to start the year.
In January, 67 people died when a military helicopter collided with a commercial plane near Ronald Reagan National Airport.
Last week, a Cessna descended into a San Diego neighborhood, killing six.
Safety issues and continued drops in consumer economic sentiment have become a toxic mix for major airlines.
Some of the biggest companies — including United, American, Delta, and Southwest — all expected booming sales in 2025.
But domestic fliers have largely pulled back on travel spending as fears about sticky inflation and increased prices from tariffs remain.
Southwest and United have both responded to the concerns by dropping some of their domestic flights from schedules.
United cut its domestic flight lineup by 4 percent.
Still, the company believes it will turn a profit this year. It confirmed its strong business with a quirky twist on a traditional financial outlook.
The airliner reported two potential forecasts for the rest of 2025. One potential earnings forecast shows the company's finances if the US avoids a recession, while the other one shows the profit if the economy continues to contract.
'The Company's outlook is dependent on the macro environment,' United said in a filing.

White House's new TikTok account has Trump supporters all saying the same thing
Donald Trump 's supporters are jazzed about the White House 's new TikTok account. Republicans in Congress have warned of national security concerns with the foreign app and pushed for the U.S. to ban TikTok if it does not sell to a non-Chinese owner. And even though Trump issued an executive order during his first term on the need to address the emergency threat posed by TikTok, the president's most loyal followers are pleased with the new account. It emerged on Tuesday night with three videos within a few hours of each other, all amassing hundreds of thousands of views. More than 110,000 users followed it by Wednesday morning with thousands more following by the minute. 'White House getting on TikTok is YUGE!' Gen Z political commentator Brilyn Hollyhand wrote on X. 'Posting behind the scenes videos, speeches, and accomplishments - that's how we keep Gen Z for the GOP!' he added. Another X user called MAGA Voice with 1.2 million followers wrote: 'President Trump just launched an official White House TikTok account with the most bada** 30 second video. This is freaking epic.' The White House said in a statement to the Daily Mail that the account is meant to communicate Trump's successes to Americans directly on as 'many platforms as possible.' TikTok is owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, and Republicans in Congress have repeatedly threatened a U.S. ban if it does not sell to a company without ties to the CCP. Those threats have turned out to be empty with the president acknowledging his tariffs on Beijing might make a sale even more difficult. He has extended the must-sell-by date several times, and it doesn't appear a deal will happen before the current September deadline. On January 18 this year, TikTok was removed from U.S. app stores and those with it already downloaded were met with the message: 'Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately that means you can't use TikTok for now.' The app was back up and running in the U.S. just hours later after Trump announced he extended the deadline for ByteDance's sale. 'Thanks for your patience and support,' a message on the app read for users who regained access. 'As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.!' TikTok's Singaporean CEO Shou Zi Chew, who attended Trump's inauguration, posted a video praising the then-incoming president. Many Republicans are against TikTok operating in the U.S., and warn that is causes a massive security concern because the CCP has access to users' data. In his August 2020 executive order, Trump even admitted that the app could be used to track federal employees, conduct espionage and facilitate censorship or disinformation. At the time, he called the threat of Chinese-owned companies operating in the U.S. a 'national emergency.' Chinese human rights advocate Yaqiu Wang posted to X: 'American politics has become such a farce.' 'Congress nearly unanimously passed a bill requiring the sale of TikTok over national security concerns. Yet, not only has the president illegally refused to enforce it, but now the White House itself is busy posting on TikTok,' she expanded. Additionally, Mario Nawfal, who posts pro-Trump content to X, wrote: 'Trump has praised TikTok as key to energizing young voters during his 2024 win over Kamala.' 'Intelligence agencies have long warned about the app's Chinese ties,' he acknowledged. Target appoints lifelong employee as new CEO in effort to halt sliding sales
Target has selected a lifelong employee as its next CEO in a bid to revive sales as shoppers turn to the retail giant's competitors. After more than two decades at the company, joining first as a college intern in 2003, chief operating officer Michael Fiddelke is set for a tenth promotion on February 1, 2026. The company announced Wednesday that he will succeed current chief executive Brian Cornell, who is expected to transition to executive chair of the board. Fiddelke, 49, will take over as Target experiences a sustained period of sluggish results, losing market share to the likes of Walmart and Amazon, which some consumers perceive as having lower prices and better items. 'We've got to get back to growth,' Fiddelke told reporters beside Cornell in a joint statement at the company's Minneapolis headquarters. 'That is mission 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.' For over two years, the company's sales have been either flat or falling as competitors have adopted a similar trendy yet affordable approach to their merchandise, compounded by backlash and boycotts over its reversals in diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. A companywide survey released in early June found about 40 percent of the around 260,000 staffers who replied said they didn't have confidence in Target's future, The Wall Street Journal reported last week. Target revealed on Wednesday that sales from stores and digital channels in operation for at least a year plunged 1.9 percent in the most recent quarter. It marks the 11th consecutive quarter of flat or slumping sales. Out of 35 merchandise categories that Target tracks, just 14 gained or maintained market share in that period, Fiddelke said Tuesday. Fiddelke pointed to supply-chain chaos and a sales boost stemming from the early Covid-19 pandemic, as consumers broadly purchased more items amid lockdowns. The shopper experience, he said, had degraded with products often out of stock and stores being strained by also acting as e-commerce shipping hubs. 'We've got some work to do to untangle that complexity because what we can't have is any hiccups in the store experience,' Fiddelke said. To turn things around at the company, which shoppers once affectionately called 'Tar-zhay,' Fiddelke promised to refocus on its 'North Star': stylish, unique merchandise and excellent customer experiences. Fiddelke's first taste of a career at Target occurred after landing an internship in 2003 while studying for a master's degree in business administration at Northwestern University, according to his LinkedIn profile. He joined the company as a financial analyst the following year. He began climbing his way through nine positions before emerging as chief operating officer and executive vice president in January 2024. Cornell, his predecessor, took the helm at Target in August 2014. In September 2022, the board extended the 66-year-old's contract for an additional three years, eliminating a policy requiring its chief executives to retire at 65. While Cornell helped to reenergize the company, he struggled to turn around weak sales in a more competitive, post-pandemic retail landscape. Now, the outgoing CEO says Fiddelke is the 'right' person to replace him. 'Mike was the right candidate to lead our business back to growth,' Cornell told reporters. 'As I arrived at Target, I consistently relied on Michael's strategic insights and sound judgment when making decisions. Michael has developed a deeper knowledge of our business than anyone I know.'

How to make climate-friendly and sustainable choices when shopping online
One way to be climate-friendly: Shop sustainably. But figuring out which products count as 'sustainable' can be hard, especially when buying online. As ordering with a computer or phone becomes more ubiquitous, the number of online products labeled sustainable is also increasing. Yet there is no single seal of approval across e-commerce platforms that verifies whether something is climate-friendly, partly because there are multiple ways to define sustainability. Third-party nonprofit organizations study manufacturers and sellers' practices and offer certifications that are displayed online. Government programs such as the Agriculture Department's organic certification or Environmental Protection Agency 's Energy Star efficiency standard are also often listed. Large e-commerce websites may highlight the certifications with special icons, hyperlinks to certification programs or written descriptions. The mixture can invite homework from buyers. Elwyn Grainger-Jones, who leads a nonprofit that certifies product sustainability, said there also isn't a single clearinghouse that tracks which third-party certifications are the most credible. 'Therein lies an issue and a challenge,' said Grainger-Jones, CEO of Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. 'What we haven't seen so far is a third-third party step in and be the information portal on what a good certification is." And while shopping online might come with more packaging, it doesn't always come with more emissions. A person shopping online may even emit less than if they went to the store in person, according to a study published in Environmental Science and Technology. But there are a lot of variables, including which e-commerce site they use, the shipping speed they select and how close they live to a brick-and-mortar alternative. There might not be one surefire way to tell sustainable products from unsustainable ones, but certification experts shared tips on what to look for. Many apply to in-person purchases, too, so you can keep them in mind for the supermarket or furniture store. Know how sustainability is measured There are multiple measures of sustainability, and sometimes positive attributes can be offset by negative ones. Third-party certification is meant to show that an independent group studied these factors. Some focus on one issue, while others look holistically at how different factors fit together. Manufacturing an item might have low emissions but use lots of water. A company might reduce plastic, but if its products don't last long, they can still wind up in the landfill. Other sustainability concerns include energy efficiency, how far the item has traveled and how resources were extracted to make it. Certification labeling also varies. Sometimes it's printed on the product, sometimes it's listed on the manufacturer's website and sometimes the certifying body lists the products that have earned its approval. Large retail websites, in turn, often list certifications in a product description. Check whether it's verified by a third party Third-party verification is a core avenue for determining whether a manufacturer's sustainability claims are legitimate. 'Ideally you want to look for some certifying bodies because they've removed some of that up-front labor that as a consumer you otherwise might have to do," said Clementina Consens of B-Lab, which certifies companies that meet environmental and social standards. Grainger-Jones said some companies create their own self-certifications that look convincing but don't mean much. 'You can go and buy a self-declared certificate for a couple of thousand dollars,' he said. Look for quantifiable and transparent climate goals If a company is serious about sustainability, it should have its practices assessed and make that information easy for customers to find, Consens said. She said she looks to see whether a company has completed an environmental impact assessment, whether it publicizes its findings or whether there is any tangible data on the company's greenhouse gas emissions, water or energy use. Large e-commerce websites such as Amazon, Walmart and Target have set emissions benchmarks and other climate-related targets for their suppliers and list their own companywide sustainability goals. Walmart, for example, has released extensive information on its Project Gigaton, including a list of participating suppliers, definitions of its recognition tiers and science-based requirements for suppliers' goals. Target publishes its climate goals, and has provided updates on where the company has surpassed expectations, and where it has fallen short. It also displays icons and hyperlinks next to products that meet sustainability goals. Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly program vets products based on a set of verified third-party certifications and posts a green leaf label alongside products that meet the certifications, along with hyperlinks. 'Having those third-party standards is super important for credibility,' said Nneka Leiba, Amazon's principal sustainability specialist. Certifications that aren't quantifiable or are too permissive don't meet Leiba's bar for inclusion in the program. She said when evaluating a certification, she looks to see whether it's following International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards, or other relevant standards. She said certifications should be backed by scientific rigor and require companies or products meet specific benchmarks. Leiba said manufacturers' efforts to become certified can be good for their business. She said products in the Climate Pledge Friendly program experience a 12% sales increase in the first year after earning the green leaf badge.
