JCPenney is shutting down another round of stores, and this Memorial Day weekend marks your last chance to shop at seven locations across the U.S. As confirmed by USA Today, the longtime department store will permanently close stores in California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and West Virginia on Sunday, May 25. These stores are offering final clearance sales through the weekend, giving shoppers one final opportunity to score major deals before the doors shut for good. This move is part of JCPenney's ongoing restructuring plan that dates back to its bankruptcy filing in May 2020. Back then, the company announced it would close 200 of its 850 stores as it looked for ways to stay afloat during the pandemic. After that, JCPenney was purchased by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management.According to USA Today, these are the seven JCPenney stores officially closing on Sunday, May 25, 2025:Each of these locations will hold their final sales through Memorial Day weekend, offering deep discounts on remaining inventory before closing permanently.JCPenney has been closing stores in waves since its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing back in May 2020. The pandemic hit traditional retailers hard, and JCPenney was no exception. In the months after filing, the company announced that 200 stores—nearly one-quarter of its locations—would be shut down.Since then, the brand has been trying to reinvent itself. Even though it was rescued by real estate giants Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management, store closures have continued slowly but steadily. In February 2025, JCPenney confirmed more stores would close by mid-year, although no specific list was released at that time. These seven closures appear to be part of that plan.Earlier this year, JCPenney announced a surprising move—partnering with Forever 21 to create a new fashion-focused entity called Catalyst Brands. This new group will also include Brooks Brothers, Aéropostale, Lucky Brand, Nautica, and Eddie Bauer. The company has stated these store closures are unrelated to the new venture. Still, the timing has led to speculation that JCPenney may be shifting its focus away from traditional mall locations toward more digital or brand-collaborative strategies.JCPenney's struggles reflect a much broader trend in American retail. With more shoppers turning to online platforms and avoiding malls, brick-and-mortar retailers have taken a hit. Add to that the challenges of inflation, rising prices, and the cost of living, and it's easy to see why stores are scaling back.JCPenney isn't alone. Other major chains such as Joann Fabrics, Macy's, Party City, Big Lots, Walgreens, and even some 7-Eleven locations have closed stores or filed for bankruptcy recently. The retail landscape is shifting fast, and not all brands are keeping up.If you live near one of the seven stores mentioned, this Memorial Day weekend is yourbefore the doors close for good. The official last day to shop is. Expect major markdowns as each store clears out its inventory.Shoppers are advised to visit early, as inventory may run low. These final days often bring long lines, limited selection, and no returns—so plan accordingly.Despite these closures, JCPenney continues to operate hundreds of stores across the country and has expressed confidence in its long-term future. The Catalyst Brands partnership signals a shift in strategy, potentially blending classic department store offerings with trendier, fast-fashion options.Still, with changing consumer behavior and ongoing economic pressure, the path ahead isn't guaranteed. Whether JCPenney can truly reinvent itself in the modern retail world remains to be seen. For now, though, Memorial Day weekend marks the end of the line for these seven stores—and for shoppers, one final chance at clearance prices.Seven JCPenney stores in seven U.S. states will close permanently on Sunday, May 25, 2025.JCPenney continues to shut stores due to lower foot traffic and major shifts in shopping behavior.

Social Security June 2025: Stimulus checks could be delayed this month - Here's why

Workers at the Social Security Administration (SSA) are raising concerns that some people might see delays in their payments over the next few weeks. The warning comes as the agency shifts its focus to nearly 900,000 complicated cases. SSA employees told USA Today that this change in focus could mean late or missing checks for thousands of Americans. These delays could affect people making routine updates to their accounts, like changing a bank or home address. This is important because nearly 70 million Americans depend on Social Security each month for essentials like rent, groceries, and healthcare. The agency is currently carrying out changes tied to the Social Security Fairness Act, which was passed under former President Donald Trump's administration. The law gives benefits to people who paid into the system but were previously not eligible—such as teachers, police officers, firefighters, and other public workers. Also Read: E-Verify mismatch case issue: What exactly happened at the SSA and how to resolve? Drew Powers, founder of Illinois-based Powers Financial Group said, "More than 2 million of these cases were straightforward enough to be automated, but the remaining 900,000 claims are more complicated and must be approved by hand," as quoted by Newsweek report. Although the White House says these updates should not affect current Social Security payments, SSA workers say there may still be delays for routine changes, like updating direct deposit info or sorting out Medicaid billing. Employees have been told to prioritize the remaining cases under the Fairness Act. "Using automation, SSA has already expedited over $15.1 billion in long-delayed retroactive payments to more than 2.3 million individuals affected," White House spokesperson Liz Huston said previously. SSA workers also say they've been given a deadline of July 1 to complete the updates, which is creating a backlog and slowing down responses to other types of requests.

EchoStar prepares potential bankruptcy filing amid FCC review: Report

EchoStar is considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing as the telecommunications services firm vies to shield its cache of wireless spectrum licenses from the threat of revocation by federal regulators, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The company declined to comment on the report. Last month, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) notified EchoStar it was investigating the company's compliance with certain federal obligations to provide 5G service in the U.S., questioning EchoStar's buildout extension and mobile-satellite service. FCC's actions have severely limited the company's ability to make strategic decisions regarding the growth and investment of its Boost Mobile business, according to a regulatory filing by the company last month. EchoStar has previously disclosed that it missed roughly $500 million in interest payments, citing uncertainty around the ongoing FCC review . U.S. satellite TV provider DirecTV terminated its agreement to acquire EchoStar's satellite television business last year, which includes rival Dish TV, over a failed debt-exchange offer.

Big Lots is back: Is your local store among 219 reopened this year? See list

219 stores of the retail chain Big Lots were purchased by Variety Wholesalers following the company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing late last year. The company decided to renovate and re-merchandise these stores and run them under the Big Lots brand itself. A plan to reopen all these stores in four phases over several months was announced. The last batch was thrown open to customers on June 5. 'We're thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands, and a new apparel department for the entire family,' said Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers in a press release. 'We're opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won't be perfect to start, but each week we'll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall.
