New England mall shooting happened after men ‘got into a beef,' officials say
A shooting at a Connecticut mall that left five adults injured Tuesday afternoon stemmed from two men who 'got into a beef,' according to officials. 'It was not a random act of violence, it was two young men who knew each other, had a history and a past,' Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski, Jr. said during a press conference Wednesday. 'Instead of having, at one time what would have been a fist fight, because he was armed came out with a pistol,' the mayor said. The incident occurred at the Brass Mill Center Mall in Waterbury shortly before 4:45 p.m. on May 27, Waterbury police said in a Facebook post. Police identified the suspected gunman as 19-year-old Tajuan Washington, of Waterbury, through watching surveillance footage. He was arrested and charged with five counts of assault and various weapons violations Tuesday evening. Washington was being held on a $2 million bond. He was expected to appear in court later in the day Wednesday. Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo recalled the 'chaotic scene' during the Wednesday press conference. Spagnolo said officers found the five victims in a state of panic as they were unsure if there was still an active shooter in the mall. Authorities said Washington knew all the victims. However, it was later determined that the suspected gunman had made his way through the mall, exited through the JC Penny and left shortly after the assault, Spagnolo said. Meanwhile all five victims, whose ages range from 18 to mid-20s, were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. As of Tuesday morning, three of the five people were out of the hospital. The two remaining people were said to be in stable condition. The most severe injury was one woman who shot in the spine, according to Pernerewski, Jr. However, the mayor said she is starting to regain feeling in her legs and will undergo rehabilitation to hopefully avoid paralysis. 'We are very shaken to have this happen here in Waterbury, but we're not broken,' Pernerewski said at the press conference. 'This is a strong city and we are very much standing together in times of crisis.' The mayor reassured the public that the shooting was a 'one-off incident' and that the mall and city are safe. He also said officials plan on discussing new safety and security plans to help keep the mall safe. The mall was closed Wednesday, and will be closed indefinitely, as authorities continued their investigation. 'We are working in full cooperation with the Waterbury Police Department and local officials as they investigate this unfortunate incident,' a Brass Mill Center spokesperson said in a statement sent to WFSB. 'There is no ongoing threat to the public and we will open under normal operating hours once cleared by the city,' the statement read. 'We extend our sincere gratitude to the local emergency responders for their prompt action and will continue to closely monitor the situation.' Officials have yet to find the involved weapon, but Spagnolo said Washington used a handgun in the shooting. Anyone with information about it is urged to call Waterbury detectives at (203) 574-6941 or share an anonymous tip by calling (203) 755-1234. These stores are offering final clearance sales through the weekend, giving shoppers one final opportunity to score major deals before the doors shut for move is part of JCPenney's ongoing restructuring plan that dates back to its bankruptcy filing in May 2020. Back then, the company announced it would close 200 of its 850 stores as it looked for ways to stay afloat during the pandemic. After that, JCPenney was purchased by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset to USA Today, these are the seven JCPenney stores officially closing on Sunday, May 25, 2025:Each of these locations will hold their final sales through Memorial Day weekend, offering deep discounts on remaining inventory before closing has been closing stores in waves since its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing back in May 2020. The pandemic hit traditional retailers hard, and JCPenney was no exception. In the months after filing, the company announced that 200 stores—nearly one-quarter of its locations—would be shut then, the brand has been trying to reinvent itself. Even though it was rescued by real estate giants Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management, store closures have continued slowly but steadily. Promising review: "I bought this bag looking for something similar to 'that one brand' that was affordable. This bag is absolutely gorgeous and looks identical. When I opened the box, it smelt a bit weird, but I took a leather cleaner/conditioner to the bag with a microfiber cloth, and it no longer smelt, and she looked nice and shiny. It really looks like real diamonds. I chose rose gold and if this holds up well, I will have to order another in silver. It's very secure so there's no chance of it coming off." — Sarah Downs Get it from Amazon for $19.45+ (available in three sizes and four colors). 12. A pair of metallic kitchen scissors so fancy that they look like they should be cutting a big ribbon for a grand opening of a store. These dishwasher-safe shears are perfect for cutting chicken, red meat, vegetables, and even have additional features like a bottle opener and serrated edge. Amazon Promising review:"These are no joke and a huge upgrade from the plastic handle ones I had prior. They are heavy, like "sheesh, these are so heavy, they must be expensive, heavy" which is exactly what I wanted. Also they are sharp and solid and appear forged vs stamped steel. When I say sharp, I mean the "slice through wrapping paper without needing to chomp, sharp". I will say that because they appear to be ambidextrous, they are slightly less comfy than dedicated righty or lefty scissors, but a small price to pay for a good pair of kitchen shears." — B Lipton Get them from Amazon for $13.97+ (available in five colors). 13. I like that these Steve Madden ones are made of leather, yet are in an affordable price range. They run a little narrow, but they did conform to my feet after a couple wears. No break-in issues, like blisters. The sandals are versatile and can be dressed up or down. I am mostly wearing them to work." — Lauren C Get them from Amazon for $59+ (available in women's sizes 5–11 and in 24 colors). 14. The body of this kettle is made of 304 stainless steel, which is food contact grade, which is relatively safe and hygienic. It can boil water very quickly, without wasting time, and it is not easy to burn your hands when pouring water. Then this kettle also has anti-dry boiling and overheating protection functions. It will be safer and more secure to use. There is a real-time thermometer on the body of the kettle, which can easily see the water temperature. It is very good. Hadley felon indicted for illegal possession of ammunition and explosives
HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – A federal grand jury in Springfield indicted a Hadley man on Tuesday for the alleged possession of explosives and ammunition while convicted as a felon. Charging documents stated that on April 8, 2025, law enforcement searched the home of 43-year-old Jacob D. Miller of Hadley. They found approximately 50 rounds of Federal brand .45 auto 230 grain ammunition, six firearms, explosive materials, hazardous chemicals, and radioactive materials including plutonium. Two women arrested after shoplifting at Hadley JC Penny Evidence presented at Miller's detention hearing following this search alleged that Miller had a long-standing obsession with explosives and radioactive substances since at least 2002. During that year, police searched his prior residence and found blasting caps, bomb-making instructions, military equipment, a rocket launcher, and a homemade pipe bomb. They also found a video of Miller igniting several of these explosive devices, including one he referred to as a 'hand grenade.' Miller was convicted in February 2004 in Hampshire Superior Court of two counts of possession of an explosive device and sentenced to two and a half years in jail and ten years of probation. In a separate case, he was also convicted of one count of possession of child pornography and sentenced to seven years of probation. Due to his prior convictions, Miller is prohibited from possessing any firearms, ammunition, or explosives. Court records stated that while still on probation in 2014, Miller received a cease-and-desist letter from the Massachusetts Radiation Control Program after they found he was selling depleted uranium on eBay. While Miller claimed he stopped these activities, he allegedly launched an online business called 'Collect the Periodic Table,' where he sold radioactive materials, including Plutonium-239, which he had allegedly derived from Cold War-era Soviet smoke detectors. Between June and October of 2023, Miller also allegedly sold plutonium at least five times via PayPal, and additional plutonium sale records were recovered during the 2025 search. Court records further stated that in 2023, Miller allegedly had an associate purchase five pounds of hazardous black powder on his behalf and ship it to his Hadley residence. Witnesses reported that Miller allegedly used the powder to ignite a fireball and blow up a dishwasher in his backyard. Remnants of the shipment and multiple opened bottles of black powder were also found during this year's search. The numerous hazardous substances seized from Miller's home included fuels, alkali metals, acids, and toxic elements such as arsenic. MassDEP warns that these materials pose a significant danger to occupants and first responders, and the court ordered that MassDEP conduct a safety evaluation and oversee the removal of all materials from the residence. Miller was convicted on Tuesday of one count of being a felon in possession of ammunition and one count of being a felon in possession of explosive materials. He currently remains in federal custody as the court has taken pretrial detention under advisement.
