JEDDAH - Al-Ahli secured a 3-1 win over 10-man Al-Hilal to win the battle of the Saudi Pro League sides in Jeddah on Tuesday, booking a place in Saturday's final of the Asian Champions League Elite to keep their dream of a first continental title alive.
Goals from Roberto Firmino and Ivan Toney in the ninth and 27th minutes respectively gave Matthias Jaissle's side a two-goal lead before Salem Al-Dawsari reduced the deficit three minutes from the interval.
A second yellow card for defender Kalidou Koulibaly left the four-times champions down to 10 men for the last 30 minutes and Al-Hilal crashed out despite a late penalty save by Yassine Bounou from Franck Kessie as Feras Al-Brikan netted a late third.
Al-Ahli have never won the Asian title, losing in the final in 1986 and 2012, and will face either compatriots Al-Nassr or Japan's Kawasaki Frontale in the decider. The pair face off in the second semi-final on Wednesday.
The home side went ahead when Roger Ibanez's incisive ball from inside his own half released Galeno down the left and the Brazilian's first-time centre was steered in by Firmino as he arrived in the six-yard box at pace.
Al-Ahli were dominating and their pressure paid off in the 27th minute, although their celebrations were briefly put on hold.
Riyad Mahrez's slide-rule pass released Toney behind the defence and he rolled the ball home after rounding Bounou but, while the assistant referee had raised his flag for offside, a VAR review awarded the goal to the delight of the Al-Ahli fans.
With three minutes remaining in the half Al-Hilal pulled one back, despite being second-best throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Renan Lodi's attempted pass along the edge of the penalty area was met by the retreating Kessie and the ball fortuitously landed at the feet of Al-Dawsari, who instinctively smashed his shot beyond Edouard Mendy.
Al-Hilal's hopes of completing their comeback were scuppered on the hour mark when Koulibaly was sent off after a foul on Ibanez earned the defender a second yellow card having earlier been booked for a shuddering body check on Toney.
Firmino and Galeno both hit the post with Al-Ahli seeking a third and, when Hamad Al-Tuhayfan brought down Mahrez, Kessie saw his 85th-minute penalty saved by Bounou.
Substitute Al-Brikan eventually scored the third for Al-Ahli seven minutes into injury time as Al-Hilal's desperation to equalise grew, delighting the home fans at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. REUTERS

Australia target easier path to World Cup ahead of Japan clash
Australia's Milos Degenek is hoping to avoid the play-offs to make it to the 2026 World Cup. SYDNEY – Australia's Milos Degenek said he has been impressing on younger teammates how tough it is to get to the World Cup through intercontinental play-offs, as they prepare for their last two matches in the third round of Asian qualifying. A first win over Japan in 16 years in Perth on June 5 would put Australia well on their way to the Finals in North America in 2026, but will not get them over the line if Saudi Arabia beat Bahrain in a later match. The Socceroos have a three-point edge and a healthy goal difference advantage over the Saudis, their main rivals for second place in Group C and their opponents in their final qualifier in Jeddah on June 10. The expansion of the World Cup means Australia still have room for error but Degenek, a veteran of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup campaigns that were secured by play-off wins over Honduras and Peru, is loathe to take any chances. 'It's never easy when you go to those knockout games (and) it's a lot easier if you qualify through the group stage directly,' the former Red Star Belgrade defender said in Perth this week. 'It's been hammered home and I think the boys are well aware of the situation, that there are two games that are separating us from going to a World Cup.' If Australia do beat the Samurai Blue, they still face a long wait to find out if they have secured a berth at a sixth straight World Cup Finals. The Saudis kick off in Bahrain some five hours after Australia and Japan, potentially leaving the Socceroos players on tenterhooks well into the early hours of Friday morning. 'If we do get the win, hopefully we will, we are obviously almost there,' Degenek added. 'The most important thing is that we win. We can obviously be happy inside and celebrate a little bit, but nothing too major because if Saudi win against Bahrain... we'll still have to go there and get a result.' With Japan already qualified, Hajime Moriyasu has rested several of his best players and brought in a handful of uncapped youngsters for the game. But Degenek, who played club football in Japan for Yokohama F. Marinos, did not think that would make Australia's task any easier. 'I think it's even harder for us that those so-called stars are out, because the boys that are coming in are going to want to prove to the boss that they should be there at the World Cup,' he said. 'So it's not going to be a walk in the park, and they're going to take this as serious, if not more serious, than any other game.' PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON – Bruno Fernandes confirmed on June 3 he rejected a huge offer from Saudi Arabia to stay at Manchester United, saying he wanted to 'continue to play at the highest level'. Speaking at a Portugal camp before their Nations League semi-final against Germany in Munich, he revealed he received an 'exciting offer' from Al Hilal but wanted to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford. Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to £100 million (S$174 million) for the 30-year-old. 'The president of Al Hilal called me and asked me if I wanted to move there,' Fernandes said. 'I talked to the gaffer (Amorim) and he asked me not to go. Man United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could but they didn't need the money.' The midfielder also said a transfer would have been 'easy' with several Portuguese players already in Saudi Arabia, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, but added: 'I want to play at the highest possible level. 'I want to play major competitions. I know I still can and I want to be happy doing the thing I love the most. Fernandes, who is United's captain, was one of the few players to emerge with credit from a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists across all competitions. Former United skipper Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the development was 'significant'. 'United getting that level of money, for someone of Bruno's age, obviously, you couldn't say that it would have been a bad deal,' he said. 'But, on the other hand, Manchester United's star player – only player at times – for the last four, five, six years, has been Bruno Fernandes. He's so important. 'To turn that money down (Fernandes was expected to earn a huge salary as well) at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to come out and achieve things', I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character.' United are expected to be busy in the transfer market as Amorim reshapes his under-performing squad.
