Patagonian moments on Australis Cruises sailing
"Would you like to have a Patagonia moment?" our Chilean guide asks us, 40 minutes into our sentry duty at the base of the Pia Glacier in Tierra del Fuego: "Te invito a tener un momento de silencio?" Twenty yapping voices are quieted in the vastness of this pinpoint at the edge of the earth. I hear a deep rumbling and cracking, like the timbers of a ship being crushed by ice, before a hunk breaks free from the mass to which it's been attached for the last 400 to 500 years and crashes into the frigid water to begin its cycle once again. Photo Credit: Megan Padilla Few people have witnessed this glacier calving because of its remote location in a fjord off the Beagle Channel near the farthest tip of South America. Access to one of the planet's most remote coastlines is what lures guests aboard Australis Cruises' Ventus and Stella. The 200-passenger sister ships crisscross the southern fjords of Patagonia between the Chilean port of Punta Arenas and Argentina's Ushuaia on four-night trips that run nonstop September to April, during the South American summer. The only way to see this dramatic and desolate scenery carved by ice is by boat, through the same passageways famously charted in the age of exploration. Australis has been dedicated to this route since 1990. For most guests, it is a one-way leg in a broader journey, whether as part of a South American tour package or a custom itinerary crafted by a travel advisor. Since I'd be flying 27 hours, from Minneapolis through the Chilean capital of Santiago to Punta Arenas, to experience an Australis cruise, I opted for a roundtrip that would take nine days. What I didn't expect was to feel so restored -- by nature, the effects of slow travel and having no cell or WiFi service (not even available for purchase). Australis' choice to limit its Starlink use to the crew sets an intention for the entire voyage: be in the moment. Due to Patagonia's complex tides and mercurial weather that can cover every season in an hour, the expedition crew never shared more than half a day's plan. It doesn't take long for me to let go of my need to know everything. When invited to a meal, I head down to the dining room. When summoned to a briefing, I go up to the Darwin Lounge to learn about our next excursion. In between, I nap, read or watch for whales, sea lions and dolphins from the large window in my cabin or from any of the three panoramic lounges. Two are sailboats, and one is our sister ship. Instead of docking at ports for excursions, guests load onto Zodiacs to be ferried to shore for hikes or go on a nature cruise for close-up viewing of glaciers, nesting seabirds, sea lions and penguins. The excursions are the highlight of each day, and the Australis expedition team's passion and knowledge are equally matched. Every Zodiac excursion begins by mustering in a lounge. Guests sort themselves into Spanish and English groups; the passenger manifest represents all 11 nationalities of the explorers who mapped the south part of Fireland (Tierra del Fuego) from 1520 to 1970: Portugal, Spain, England, the Netherlands, France, the U.S., Italy, Argentina, Austria, Germany and New Zealand. A few excursions are repeated, including a second chance to land at Cape Horn; at the northern edge of the Drake Passage, Cape Horn is one of the world's most notorious shipwreck graveyards. For many passengers, this is the "life list" item they've come to check off. The captain and crew study weather and conditions and do everything possible to arrive in a window of possibility. I am lucky to land both times, climbing the 200 steps to the boardwalks leading to a monument and a lighthouse. I even meet the light keeper and his young daughter and son, who sell watercolor paintings and other souvenirs. During both visits, the captain calls us back to the ship by horn because the weather is taking a dramatic turn. We return to the ship chilled, damp and dirty but ebullient and chatty with the camaraderie of a shared experience. Folks drift off to their cabins to shed gear, then dribble back into the Darwin Lounge, the top-deck perch encircled entirely by windows and with a well-stocked, complimentary bar at its center. Blenders whir, shakers shake, ice clinks, drinks emerge in all shades and glass shapes. No one asks what time it is, not even those who typically abstain from day drinking. In Patagonia, we are all living in the moment.

This Buff is made out of 2 plastic bottles — so you know you're helping the planet while wearing! REI's own brand beanie wicks moisture and is breathable while also keeping you warm. It's 30% wool, but completely itch-free, making it the perfect versatile fall or winter hat! This beanie is available in green, orangey red, and blue at a discount. Other colors remain full price. Stance socks are described as really comfy by users online, and these beautiful ones are no different. They're reinforced in the heels and the toes to prevent rubbing, and are made from combed cotton so they're uber soft. Every outdoor lover needs to have a reliable camping utensil set, right? This handy one from UCO is just $13 and has a fork, spoon, plate, and bowl. It has a lifetime warranty and a leakproof lid, so you can chuck it into your backpack, worry-free. This is the perfect headband for cold weather. The soft fabric will keep your ears warm and also make you look stylish! I love the mauve color (pictured), but the sale extends to the red shade too. This headband actually has extra-long fibers, which help you stay warmer than ever. Um, I need to draw your attention to the POCKETS on these leggings. How many times have we begged and pleaded with manufacturers to just put pockets in our leggings? Rejoice, for they have finally listened to us. The pockets can fit everything from iPhones to snacks, and I know if I had these leggings, I'd be lounging in them more than I'd care to admit. Or, you know, working out in them. As you're supposed to. This is such a versatile t shirt. It's got a boxy fit, which is what I'm looking for when shopping for workout gear. I hate feeling restricted when I'm hiking or doing yoga. This unisex shirt is still available in most sizes, and even has UPF 50+ for sun protection! I honestly want to add this shirt to my cart, like now. I'm actually in love with this t-shirt. How cute is that alpaca? (Or is it a llama?) It's available in blue and brown, and in all sizes except large. This shirt is made from a mixture of organic cotton and recycled polyester, so it's good for the planet, too. I'm literally obsessed with this print. How cute is this towel? Not only does it look stylish, it's also functional. The reverse has looped terrycloth, so it's capable of drying super fast. The towel is also Cotton LEADS certified so you know the materials are ethical, too. I have two words for you: thumb holes. Yes, this shirt has thumb holes. I'm always on the hunt for two things: shirts with thumb holes, and pants with pockets. Thankfully, with the REI leggings I mentioned above, my dreams have come true. This sweat wicking fabric will keep you dry no matter how sweaty the workout, and you'll look cool while doing it too. These shorts are available in blue and black in sizes XS, XL, and XXL. They're 5 inches long so perfect for workouts, hikes, or just running errands. They're also made with recycled polyester and have Adidas' "Aeroready" technology which will keep you dry. Oh, and a sweat-guarded back pocket, so your phone and keys will stay dry too. How cute is this hat? If I had this I'd be excited for winter for the sole purpose of wearing this hat. It's available in both green (pictured) and pinky red. And the best part? It's lined with sherpa fleece on the inside to keep you toasty all winter long. The HydroFlask 32 oz size with a straw is on sale for $11 right now, at just $23. It's discounted in dusky pink (pictured) and gray, but I love this pink shade. It's got a secure lid, so you don't need to worry about it spilling when you're out and about. This Marmot Cairns Mountain Works t-shirt is made from recycled polyester and breathable cotton, so it's perfect for hikes and everyday wear. The collar is rib-knit, too, so it won't stretch too easily. This shirt is available in small in both blue and white. Prime Day ends today, but I'm obsessed with REI's anti-Amazon Patagonia sale — here's my 23 hand-picked deals from $15
It's the last day of Prime Day today and we're checking the best last-minute Amazon Prime Day deals. However, if you're trying not to shop Amazon, don't worry. There are still loads of deals elsewhere. I'm always checking REI for Patagonia sales, because Patagonia is my ride-or-die clothing brand. Did you know Patagonia isn't owned by a billionaire, it's owned by environmental charities? When I buy Patagonia, I know my money is going to a good cause. I've got a very beaten-up yellow Patagonia backpack, and I want to be buried with it. My family always ask me when I'm going to finally trash that "yellow bag". Um, never? The whole point of Patagonia is that it lasts for years, right? Anyway, I've scoured REI for the best Patagonia savings. My favorites are the Patagonia Synchilla fleece, was $149 now just $89 at REI, and the Patagonia Nano Puff Insulated Jacket is just $167 at REI. I've picked every one of these deals myself, so keep scrolling for awesome savings. Oh, and the good news I promised you? It's made of recycled wool and nylon so you know it's warm and comfy. This beanie can be worn with or without a cuff, making it much more versatile than other styles of hats. It's made from 100% recycled polyester soft yarn, which provides warmth and softness. This is the perfect hat to wear in the winter, whether partaking in winter sports or not! One thing I love about Patagonia's t-shirts is that they're so versatile. This option is no different, thanks to its boxy fit and casual vibe. There's a multi-colored Patagonia logo on the back — REI has more pictures on its site. I love how soft Patagonia t-shirts are, too, so I know I'd be wearing this to death. While this t-shirt is on sale in both mauve and blue, it's only available in XL and XXL sizes — and at this awesome 25% discount, I'm not sure how long either size will last. Patagonia's "Responsibili-Tee" shirts are made from recycled cotton and polyester, so it's definitely a shirt for the eco-conscious out there. Personally, I love the pictured mauve shade, but the stormy blue shade is beautiful too. This is such a classic versatile hoody, I can't quite believe it's been discounted so sharply. This is the kind of sweater that never goes out of style. It's only on sale in gray (make sure you change the color on REI), but it's still available in every size except XS and XXL. This hoody is made from 30 plastic bottles, so you know you're wearing something that is benefitting the planet. These women's shorts are perfect for running and hiking. The striking orange color will mean your hiking group will never be able to lose you on the trail — perfect for those misty days. Not only are these shorts lightweight and breathable, they also have three hidden pockets for storing snacks, keys, and your phone. The best part is that they're water repellant, too! These gorgeous bright blue shorts are available in XS and S sizes, and I'm not sure how long this stock is going to last. Considering these versatile shorts are 40% off right now, I'm going to guess not long. These shorts are made from 65% recycled nylon and spandex, so they're durable (water repellant, too), and stretchy for über comfortable trekking. REI says this sale is running low on inventory so you need to be quick! The sale is only on this gorgeous blue color, but honestly? This is the most striking shade so I'm not mad about it. I own this backpack (in pink) and it's so comfortable to carry. The straps are padded, so it's easy to carry for long distances, and the inside has a removable laptop sleeve for office-hike days. One of my favorite things about Patagonia apparel is that it's so versatile. These corduroy pants are no different. Thanks to the organic cotton fabric and elastic waistband, these pants are super comfortable. They can also be worn dressed up or down, which makes them ideal for day trips, running errands, or even date night. Wearers claim that they run a little small, so recommend sizing up. The brown shade is at an even bigger discount — just $31 — but only available in size 12, whereas the black color is available in size 2-14. Patagonia's Synchilla range is famous for a reason. This fabric is so soft, it almost feels like the chinchilla for which it was named (I assume, anyway). The body fabric is made from recycled polyester, so you know your jacket is helping the environment too! It's available in orange in S and XL, XXL in brown. The Patagonia Wind Shield jacket is discontinued, so I'd grab it now, for two reasons: 1) before it sells out, and 2) while it's on sale. This pictured blue color is available in sizes XS and S, and the blue colorway is $138, but available in all colors. This jacket is designed for windy days and is intended to be fitted to keep body heat in and the cold out. The Re-Tool Pullover is available in both the pictured light brown and dark forest green, but there are more sizes in stock in the brown. This fleece is made from 100% recycled polyester, so you know you're helping out the environment when you buy this jacket — more than other new fleeces, at least! I have had loads of Patagonia fleeces throughout my life and they're always so soft, warm, and keep their shape really well. If I didn't have the aforementioned "yellow bag", I would definitely be adding this style to my cart. Not only is this backpack an iconic "black hole" pack (which does what it says on the tin — fits way more than it looks like!), it's also a hiking/commute bag. It has a laptop sleeve and a chest strap for those days when you have the office at 5 but hiking at 6. The Patagonia Retro Pile Half Snap Pullover is almost as iconic as the Synchilla fleece — but the Retro Pile Half Snap is made from 100% recycled Synchilla fabric too! This sale is active on both the gray (pictured) and blue colorways, but is only discounted to $139 in the blue shade. Despite the massive $76 saving, the gray shade is still available in all sizes except XXL and L. This fleece is destined for the mountains. The R1 Thermal Jacket is close-fitting and low-profile, perfect for keeping you warm on blustery cold ridges. The microgrid fabric wicks moisture, so even if you're sweaty, you'll stay comfortable while tackling the most challenging of climbs. It'll also keep you warm running errands in the wintertime, of course. Although it's July now, this is the perfect time to get a new fall jacket. This is a thin water repellant jacket, so I wouldn't recommend it for winter! The clue's in the name with this one: the Patagonia Transitional Trench Jacket. This is ideal for transition seasons thanks to its removable hood and internal collar, which you can adjust based on your desired insulation level. The R1 Air Zip Hoody is still available in every single size in this teal shade, and in most sizes in black, purple, and gray. This fleece is perfect for staying warm without needing a bulky outer layer, thanks to the close fit and hood. What's more is the fabric is breathable and sweat wicking, making it ideal for outdoor activities in fall, winter, and spring. How gorgeous is this fleece? I'm obsessed with the pattern. The Classic Retro-X has a handy chest pocket for things like snacks, keys, and even your phone. This colorway is available in M and L, and has both recycled polyester fabric and odor control! I think I would choose this fleece out of all the options on this list for the striking pattern. I know July is a weird time to be buying a jacket, but winter's going to come whether we like it or not... so we might as well be prepared, right? The Nano Puff jacket is insulated with synthetic materials, which means even people who stay away from down can make use of this. Right now, the discount includes every color (black, white, orange, green, dark blue, light blue) and most sizes, but hurry! I'm not sure how long stock will last at this price. This is the exact same jacket as above, but in the men's cut. It's still available in all colors and most sizes, but at this price, I'm not sure how long the sale will last.
