Belagavi start-up launches AI-based agriculture app

The Hindu06-05-2025

Belagavi-based SBOF Agrosmart Private Limited has launched SBOF Agrosmart, which is being billed a India's first AI-based all-in-one agriculture app. It will provide all-round support to farmers and could lead to a revolution in agriculture, according to start-up founders Savio Pereira and Swati Pereira.
Farmers across India are facing increasing uncertainty — climate change, market price fluctuations, pest & disease outbreaks, lack of timely information, low-quality inputs, and difficulty accessing government schemes and modern tools.
SBOF Agrosmart attempts to bridge this gap through a smart, digital-first approach that delivers real-time, region-specific, and data-driven agricultural solutions. Backed by a decade of experience in fertiliser manufacturing and agri-inputs, the company has come up with a futuristic platform powered by Artificial Intelligence, IoT, and expert-driven agriculture advisory services.
The app has an in-built chat bot for round-the-clock support in multiple languages.
PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi launched the app in Belagavi in the presence of MLA Asif (Raju) Sait, BUDA Chairman Laxmanrao Chingale, DCC Bank President Appasaheb Kulgode, former minister Veerakumar Patil, former MLAs Sham Bheem Ghatge, Arvind Patil, and Kakasaheb Patil.

UK's Long Harbour proposes $852 million bid for PRS REIT

BENGALURU: UK property investor Long Harbour has made a 631.6 million pound ($852 million) takeover proposal for Britain's PRS REIT at below the market price, sending PRS REIT shares down around 2% on Wednesday. PRS, a real-estate investment trust that has put itself up for sale, said London-based Long Harbour was proposing to offer 115 pence per share in cash, a 3.3% discount to PRS' closing price of 118.8 pence on Tuesday. The shares hit a record high of 125 pence earlier in the day after Sky News reported the possible offer and said Long Harbour had secured financing to launch a 700 million pound bid. A deal could add to a flurry of recent transactions within the UK-listed REIT industry, and underscore the growing appetite among players to bolster operations against an uncertain economic backdrop. "Intra-REIT M&A ... makes fewer, larger and more investable stocks, so less is more," Jefferies analysts said in a note on Tuesday. Last week, Unite Group proposed to buy Empiric Student Property for about $976 million, while Warehouse REIT agreed to be bought by investment firm Blackstone for $635 million. LondonMetric agreed to buy Urban Logistics for $925 million in May. PRS, which focuses on family homes in the private rented sector, said in February it had received several proposals from unidentified parties. The company said on Wednesday it expected to provide an update on its sale process by the end of June. The process followed the launch of a strategic review in October after PRS replaced two board members, including its then chair, in agreement with a group of shareholders who had demanded these changes.

Disney, Universal sue AI firm Midjourney for copyright infringement

Last Updated: New York, Jun 11 (AP) Disney and Universal have filed a copyright lawsuit against popular artificial intelligence image-generator Midjourney on Wednesday, marking the first time major Hollywood companies have enter the legal battle over generative AI. Filed in federal district court in Los Angeles, the complaint claims Midjourney pirated the libraries of the two Hollywood studios to generate and distribute 'endless unauthorized copies" of their famed characters, such as Darth Vader from Star Wars and the Minions from Despicable Me. 'Midjourney is the quintessential copyright free-rider and a bottomless pit of plagiarism. Piracy is piracy, and whether an infringing image or video is made with AI or another technology does not make it any less infringing," the companies state in the complaint. The studios also claimed the San Francisco-based AI company ignored their requests to stop infringing on their copyrighted works and to take technological measures to halt such image generation. Midjourney could not immediately be reached for comment. The small startup is one of a crop of research labs enabling people to experiment with AI-generated visuals and text. Major AI developers don't typically disclose their data sources but have argued that taking troves of publicly accessible online text, images and other media to train their AI systems is protected by the 'fair use" doctrine of American copyright law.
