What is ‘Fund Kaveri Engine'? All about DRDO project and India's push to build indigenous 5th-gen fighter jets

An online campaign—'Fund Kaveri Engine'—is generating immense attention and excitement in the aftermath of the May 7 Operation Sindoor. The topic has been trending across social media platforms as thousands of users urge the government to invest in Indigenous defence technology and reduce dependency on foreign-made fighter jet engines.
Of late, 'Fund Kaveri Engine' has become a hot topic of discussion. Let's explore Kaveri Engine and how its development will benefit India's defence system.
Kaveri engine refers to an indigenously developed turbo engine used in the light combat aircraft programme. It is designed and developed to propel fighter jets.
Spearheaded by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)'s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) based in Bengaluru, the project has faced significant setbacks and delays due to various challenges. The requirement of complex advanced technologies, Western sanctions, lack of skilled manpower, and major reliance on foreign setups were the key reasons for its delay.
'Concurrent certification coverage was provided by RCMA(E). Certification methodology for fighter-class engine has been evolved for raw material, components, systems, LRUs, and full engine-level qualification for the first time in India,' DRDO had said.
In 2008, the project was delinked from the Tejas programme, but a derivative version is being developed, and the project has been adapted for India's fifth-generation fighter aircraft, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). It also aims to power unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) and naval vessels.
Defence experts and enthusiasts have flooded the internet with calls to prioritise the Kaveri engine's development and fulfil the nation's dream to have an indigenous fighter jet engine. Stalled for years, the project, which started in the 1980s, has become a symbol of India's pursuit of self-reliance.
Many users called on PM Modi to allocate funds and resources for the development of the Kaveri engine, emphasising the need of the hour and the importance of achieving self-sufficiency in military aviation technology.
Given its strategic importance in defence technology, social media users asserted that the next target should be 'Made in India' gas turbine engines, rather than importing them from the US, Russia or France.

'Chenab & Anji Bridge are transformative projects': PM Modi hails infra push in J&K; watch top moments from his visit

PM Modi shares highlights from J&K visit NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday shared a video capturing highlights from his visit to Jammu and Kashmir a day earlier, where he inaugurated the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and Anji Bridge. After the formal ceremony, PM Modi walked across the bridge while waving the national flag, symbolising both India's engineering prowess and patriotic spirit. Posting on X, he wrote, 'Highlights from a memorable visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The Chenab Rail Bridge and Anji Bridge are transformative projects!' During his visit, the Prime Minister also flagged off the Vande Bharat train service connecting Katra in Jammu to Srinagar in Kashmir. The Chenab Bridge, which rises 359 metres above the river, taller than the Eiffel Tower, is a critical infrastructure project that closes a long-pending gap in rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, ensuring year-round access. Located in the Reasi district, the rail arch bridge is an excellent example of engineering marvel. After the inauguration, PM Modi visited a photo exhibition showcasing the technical challenges overcome during the bridge's construction and interacted with the engineers and workers who built it amid extreme weather and tough terrain. The Anji Bridge, over Chenab river, is also a key part of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link. The Prime Minister's visit to Jammu and Kashmir was also significant as it marked his first trip to the region since the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.

Pakistan reacts as PM Modi says Islamabad involved in Pahalgam attack

Pakistan said on Friday it was "dismayed" over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks that Islamabad was involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed. Commenting on PM Modi's remarks, Pakistan's Foreign Office said it "firmly rejects the baseless and misleading remarks" made by PM Modi. 'We are deeply dismayed that the Indian prime minister has once again chosen to accuse Pakistan of involvement in the Pahalgam attack, without presenting a single piece of credible evidence,' it said in a statement, as per news agency PTI. PM Modi accused Pakistan of targeting "insaniyat and Kashmiriyat" through the terror attack in Pahalgam during his speech in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. PM Modi reiterated that the April 22 Pahalgam attack was a stark example through which Pakistan "intended to incite communal violence in India and cripple the earnings of hardworking Kashmiris". 'What happened in Pahalgam on April 22 is a clear example of this. Pakistan attacked both insaaniyat and Kashmiriyat in Pahalgam. Its intention was to incite riots in India. Its aim was to stop the earnings of the hardworking people of Kashmir. That's why Pakistan targeted the tourists,' PM Modi said while addressing a rally in Katra after inaugurating the first direct train service to the Kashmir Valley. He added, 'The way the people of Jammu and Kashmir have stood up against Pakistan's conspiracy, the strength shown by the people this time has not only sent a strong message to Pakistan, but also to the entire world's terrorist mindset. Jammu and Kashmir's people have given a powerful response.' Earlier on Friday, the prime minister inaugurated the Chenab bridge and India's first cable-stayed Anji bridge, both symbols of India's engineering excellence, before flagging off Vande Bharat trains to mark the completion of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link (USBRL) providing direct train connectivity to the Valley. About two weeks after the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes. (With inputs from agencies)
