10,000 Ayushman Mandirs remain shut across Andhra as CHOs go on strike
VIJAYAWADA: Healthcare services in rural the State have come to a standstill as 10,032 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (Village Health Clinics) remain partially shut due to an indefinite strike by Community Health Officers (CHOs). The strike, which began on April 18, has left lakhs of villagers without access to basic medical care.
The CHOs, all BSc Nursing graduates recruited under the National Health Mission (NHM), are demanding regularisation of services and overdue pay revision. Despite serving for over five years, they claim their salaries have not been enhanced, unlike other NHM employees who received a 23% hike last year.
'CHOs in the State under NHM have been on strike for 14 days demanding a pay revision, which has been denied for the last six years,' said Niranjan, President of the AP Mid-Level Health Providers/Community Health Officers Association (APMCA). 'We also seek resolution of other issues like incentive dues, rental arrears, Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) restoration, and administrative delays.'
The government directed Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and ASHA workers to step in during the strike. However, patients allege that these staffers are irregular or unavailable in many villages, further compounding the crisis.

Statewide TB awareness drive from June 1
Bhopal: A state-wide Intensive TB Free India Campaign will begin on June 1, with Bhopal among the key districts where health workers will reach out to vulnerable populations at transport hubs, health centres and industrial sites, officials said on Saturday. Dr Prabhakar Tiwari, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bhopal, announced that camps would operate at transport hubs, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, health centres, factories, construction sites, and industrial areas to ensure comprehensive coverage of working-class communities. The initiative focuses on screening, investigating, and treating high-risk patients, following the previous 100-day Nikshay camps held in 23 priority districts from December 7 to March 25, 2025. The campaign specifically addresses diabetics, the malnourished, smokers, alcohol users, former TB patients, contacts and HIV-positive individuals, utilising NAAT and X-ray for diagnosis. The campaign involves collaboration with local bodies, self-help groups, and various health committees. It aims to identify new Nikshay Mitras and TB Champions, whilst conducting awareness programmes through religious leaders, cultural activities, and school events. The initiative includes "Ni-Kshay Saptah" activities across government departments.

All govt hospitals, health facilities to celebrate Yoga Day on June 21
Lucknow: As part of the Yogi govt's resolve to promote holistic health and well-being, the state health and family welfare department will organise programmes in all govt hospitals and health facilities. "Instructions have been given to ensure that Yoga Day is organised in all district hospitals, community health centres, primary health centres, and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs of the state. A roadmap for organising these events is being prepared in advance to ensure maximum participation," an official spokesperson said on Saturday. Informing the district authorities that the Yoga Day theme for 2025 is "Yoga for One Earth, One Health," the official letter stated: "The aim is to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga for improving overall health and lifestyle. In Uttar Pradesh, regular yoga sessions are already being held at all Ayushman Arogya Mandirs to support people's physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. On June 21, special yoga events will be organised at all these locations as part of this ongoing effort. " Sharma further said to help more people take part in International Yoga Day, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will provide general yoga protocol skills to interested participants at the local level. The Ministry of AYUSH, along with the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, will also offer online training for yoga instructors. "Coordination should be established with the block/district administration while ensuring active participation of ASHA/ANM, voluntary organisations, and educational institutions at the community level. The message should be disseminated to the public through physical and digital means," he said.

Min: 41k to be appointed in health dept before polls
Patna: Health minister Mangal Pandey on Friday announced that 41,000 appointments will be made in the state health department before the model code of conduct for elections comes into effect. He was speaking after handing over appointment letters to 228 specialist doctors in Patna. "The process for 8,500 appointments is in its final stages. We are taking major steps to strengthen healthcare in Bihar. Advertisements have been issued for 41,000 posts across various health categories," he said. Under the National Health Mission (NHM), the recruitment of 722 general physicians will be completed within 15 days. "Pathology services are being improved to ensure better diagnostic and treatment facilities," he added. The newly appointed specialists include 30 orthopaedic surgeons, 27 general surgeons, 17 ophthalmologists, 25 physicians (MD), 38 paediatricians, 55 gynaecologists, 13 ENT surgeons, 12 psychiatrists, 3 dermatologists and 8 anaesthetists. "All vacant posts in the health sector will be filled soon.
