Community Health Officers strike in AP enters 25th day
The Andhra Pradesh Mid-level Health Providers/Community Health Officers Association (APMCA) workers indefinite strike across the State has entered 25th day, escalating their demands for government intervention. The union leaders have submitted a representation to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and are waiting for resolution of their long-standing issues. Speaking to The Hindu, APMCA president N. Niranjan said, 'Under National Health Mission (NHM), nearly 23,000 employees, including 10,000 Community Health Officers (CHOs), are working in AP. The CHOs have not received 23% enhancement on par with other NHM employees. Also, regularisation of services is pending for those who completed six years of service.' Earlier, when we staged a protest in November 2023, Special Chief Secretary for Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare M.T. Krishna Babu had assured to resolve our issues, Mr. Niranjan said while adding that even though he remained in the same position after the change of government, there was no announcement till now in the favour of CHOs. The CHOs play a vital role in the Ayushman Arogya Mandir (AAM) programme, which is a key component of the Ayushman Bharat initiative. They are mid-level service providers who deliver comprehensive primary health care services at the AAMs, which are essentially upgraded Health and Wellness Centers (HWCs). The CHOs have been on a strike across the State since April 10. In Prakasam district, the CHOs took out a huge rally and staged an innovative protest by performing yoga asanas at Church Centre in Ongole on Friday. M. Rajesh, vice president of APMCA and a CHO from Dornala mandal in the district, demanded the revival of EPFO for their job security.

Building owner booked after 3 killed in wall collapse at Delhi's Paharganj
The Delhi Police have booked the owner of an under-construction building after its wall collapsed, killing three people at Arakashan Road in Paharganj Saturday evening. The wall collapsed at the basement site of a hotel following heavy rainfall. The police said the incident was reported via a PCR call at 6.20 pm. Upon arriving at the site, police and rescue teams found that the wall had collapsed, as the structure had weakened due to ongoing construction activities. The deceased were identified as Prabhu, 65, the contractor overseeing the construction; Niranjan, 40, a construction worker; and Roshan, 35, another worker at the site. Prabhu was reportedly leading the basement construction project, with Niranjan and Roshan working under him. In another wall collapse, a 35-year-old man died and his co-worker was injured while doing welding work in Outer North Delhi. DCP (Outer North) Nidhin Valsan said police received information regarding a wall collapse in Prahladpur. The victims, Ashok and Sumit, 36, were taken to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital, where Ashok was declared dead on arrival. These wall collapse incidents happened barely a month after a building in Northeast Delhi's Dayalpur collapsed following a dust storm in the early hours of April 19. The collapse killed 11 people, of whom eight were members of the family of a 2020 Northeast Delhi riots victim. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had then ordered a probe into the incident, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to those who lost their loved ones and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000 each, he had said in a post on X. President Droupadi Murmu had also expressed her condolences to all the affected families. Delhi minister Kapil Mishra and local MLA Mohan Singh Bisht had also visited the site. 'All these colonies are unauthorised. We will act against the MCD officials who cleared these houses,' Mishra had said.

Delhi rain: 3 killed after wall of under-construction building collapses
Three people were killed when a wall collapsed at an under-construction basement site of a hotel, following heavy rainfall, at Arakashan Road in Paharganj on Saturday evening. Police said the incident was reported via a PCR call at 6.20 pm. Another person was injured in the incident, they said. When they reached the site, police and rescue teams discovered that the wall had given way as the structure had weakened due to ongoing construction activities, and was worsened by the rain. The deceased have been identified as Prabhu, 65, the contractor overseeing the construction; Niranjan, 40, a construction worker; and Roshan, 35, another worker at the site. Prabhu was reportedly leading the basement construction project, with Niranjan and Roshan working under him. Chuttan, 35, sustained injuries and has been admitted to a hospital for treatment, said police. Police and emergency services are conducting further rescue operations on site. The incident comes barely a month after a building in Northeast Delhi's Dayalpur collapsed following a dust storm in the early hours of April 19. The collapse killed 11 people, of whom eight were members of the family of a 2020 Northeast Delhi riots victim. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had then said that the building was around 20 years old and was an unauthorised construction. Police sources had said some shops were being constructed on the ground floor, and the work underway likely caused the structure to weaken. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had then ordered a probe into the incident, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to those who lost their loved ones and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased. 10,000 Ayushman Mandirs remain shut across Andhra as CHOs go on strike
VIJAYAWADA: Healthcare services in rural the State have come to a standstill as 10,032 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (Village Health Clinics) remain partially shut due to an indefinite strike by Community Health Officers (CHOs). The strike, which began on April 18, has left lakhs of villagers without access to basic medical care. The CHOs, all BSc Nursing graduates recruited under the National Health Mission (NHM), are demanding regularisation of services and overdue pay revision. Despite serving for over five years, they claim their salaries have not been enhanced, unlike other NHM employees who received a 23% hike last year. 'CHOs in the State under NHM have been on strike for 14 days demanding a pay revision, which has been denied for the last six years,' said Niranjan, President of the AP Mid-Level Health Providers/Community Health Officers Association (APMCA). 'We also seek resolution of other issues like incentive dues, rental arrears, Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) restoration, and administrative delays.' The government directed Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and ASHA workers to step in during the strike. However, patients allege that these staffers are irregular or unavailable in many villages, further compounding the crisis.
