Wicklow harbours and fishing facilities to get significant enhancements as latest funding drops
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will administer the programme and will co-fund up to 75pc of the eligible project costs, up to a maximum reimbursement of €187,500, with the local authority co-funding the remaining costs.
A grant of €187,500 has been allocated towards underwater concrete repair works at the east pier in Wicklow Harbour, with the full cost of the project estimated at €249,700.
€45,000 has been allocated for main entrance works at Wicklow Port, with a total project estimate of €60,000.
A grant of €26,250 has been provided for pedestrian and vehicle roller gate infrastructure at Arklow Harbour, at an estimated project cost of € €35,000.
€187,275 has been reserved for the installation of CCTV and access control systems at Wicklow and Arklow Harbours, with the full cost of the project estimated at €249,700.
In welcoming the funding, cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District Cllr Gail Dunne said: 'The east pier has been undermined by the sea and it has been a long-term problem so any funding provided will prove really helpful.
'The works due to take place at the entrance to Wicklow Harbour will involve some dredging to keep the main entrance clear to help improve the depth of the harbour so bigger ships can come in. Some works have taken place previously and this should help to further improve the harbour.
'Most ports in the country already have CCTV and access control systems in place. It's important to have the proper security in place for the movement of timber and different things down at the harbour.'
Tánaiste Simon Harris also welcomed the announcement and said this was a significant boost to marine infrastructure in Wicklow.

'This is a vital and welcome investment in Wicklow's marine infrastructure. The increased total value of individual projects across the country in this year's allocation gives local authorities the opportunity to continue the ongoing development and enhancement of harbour and fishing facilities, while also allowing for some marine leisure developments, benefitting different cohorts of users.
'These projects will ensure our harbours are safer, more secure, and better equipped to support local communities, businesses, and tourism. I am proud to have supported this funding and will continue to advocate for investment in our coastal infrastructure.'

Ireland welcomes confirmation of all-inclusive 15 per cent tariff in EU-US joint statement
A 15 PER CENT tariff on EU goods being imported into the US will apply to all sectors it was confirmed in a statement issued today. The EU-US Joint Statement on Trade, released this morning, confirms a 15 per cent tariff ceiling on EU goods exports to the US inclusive of existing US Most Favoured Nation tariffs, except where these are already higher. Tánaiste Simon Harris has welcomed the clarification provided in the statement, which he claims provides a 'first step' to further negotiations. 'We note the Joint Statement is now published following weeks of negotiation,' Mr Harris said today. 'We welcome clarity that the deal includes a single, all-inclusive 15% tariff on EU goods. 'We also now have assurance that this rate will extend to pharmaceuticals and semiconductors,' he added. 'This provides an important shield to Irish exporters that could have been subject to much larger tariffs pending the outcomes of Section 232 US investigations into these sectors.' Today's joint statement also includes 'zero for zero' tariff rate carve outs for aircraft and aircraft parts and 'leaves the door open for negotiation of further tariff reductions in the future on products of strategic common interest' Mr Harris's office explained. 'As the Statement makes clear, this is a framework agreement which gives us a first step to negotiate a more comprehensive and formal agreement with the US in the future,' the Tánaiste said. 'Our intention now is to see what other carve outs can be made in areas of interest for Irish exporters.' The Joint Statement also commits to future work in areas such as mutual recognition agreements on standards and conformity assessments, overcapacity in the steel and aluminium sector, and cooperation on critical raw materials. 'While the deal finally provides certainty, we also are acutely aware of the impact of higher tariffs and the existing difficulties that many Irish exporters have already faced this year,' Mr Harris said. 'In that regard, we also must continue to control what we can control and continue to make our country, and our European Union, as competitive as possible, as good a location as possible to invest in and create jobs. 'We must also look for other opportunities to diversify markets for Irish business. While we want to continue to do business with the US and indeed want to grow business. It is important that we take every opportunity to identify new markets." Next Monday, August 25, the Irish Government is due to publish its new Market Diversification Action Plan. Speaking after today's statement was issued, EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said the statement "carries considerable weight and is truly impactful at a time when the trade landscape has completely changed". "Our transatlantic relationship is one of the largest economic partnerships in the world," he explained. "And this agreement has a clear, common goal – to put it on solid ground and help drive reindustrialisation on both sides of the Atlantic. We want to fully unleash the potential of our combined economic power. "But this is not the end. It is the beginning. This framework is a first step – one that can grow over time to cover more sectors, improve market access, and strengthen our economic ties even further." He added: "A 15% all-inclusive tariff cap for the EU: this is the most favourable trade deal the US has extended to any partner. "A wide range of sectors – including strategic industries, such as cars, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber – will benefit from this cap." DAERA announces changes to animal transport policy for shows
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has announced changes to the transport policy when transporting animals to a show or exhibition. From October 1, 2025, transport of certain nature will no longer be deemed to be in connection with economic activity. This includes: Where animals are taken to or from a specialist show or competition, and the primary purpose is for pleasure rather than as part of a business. Where horses and ponies are transported by an owner for the purpose of riding, showing, or competing for pleasure. As a result, DAERA has said that owners transporting animals who meet that criteria to shows will no longer be required to have mandatory transport approvals such as a transporter authorisation certificate of competence or an approved vehicle. DAERA also indicated the some exceptions will still require the necessary transport approvals. This includes: Farm animals attending shows. Animals attending racing events. Professional horse riders or jockeys, including those sponsored to compete. According to DAERA, if there is uncertainty whether the planned movement is in connection with an economic activity, the transporter must demonstrate to the competent authority that it has no connection with an economic activity. The Single Animal Exemption (SAE), which allowed individuals in Northern Ireland to transport a single animal without mandatory approvals, will be revoked from October 1, 2025. From that date, anyone transporting a single animal for economic purposes over 65km, must have transporter authorisation. Depending on the species and journey duration, a certificate of competence and vehicle approval may also be required. A DAERA spokesperson said: 'The changes to these policies will allow owners and their companion animals to move more freely to animal shows and exhibitions. "The changes will align DAERA's policy with the approach taken in Britain, which will help to resolve the confusion which has existed around travel to these types of shows." 'The revocation of the SAE will also close the loophole which has permitted some commercial transporters to avoid having the necessary transport approvals and training in place to transport animals," the spokesperson added.
