Renault starts teasing new SUV confirmed to be called Boreal
The alleged Renault badged of the Dacia Bigster is known to have received interest for South Africa once production in India officially starts.

Set to only go on-sale in 2027, but confirmed to debut before the end of this year, Renault has released the first teaser image confirming the name of a new C-segment SUV.
Part of what it terms its International Game Plan 2027, the newcomer will adopt the Boreal nameplate Renault says 'encapsulates the values that the SUV stands for: technology, status and comfort'.
Renault's Bigster?
While the brief statement released on Monday (28 April) doesn't provide any further details, apart from the Boreal bowing in Brazil 'in the coming months' and then being distributed in 70 markets, speculation has alleged it will be Renault's version of the Dacia Bigster known to be in the pipeline for South Africa.

This, according to carscoops.com, who claims the choice of name comes from the Latin word for north wind, while also referring to the god of wind in Greek mythology, boreas.
Same engines
If indeed the rebadged Bigster, itself the extended version of the new Duster, the Boreal will have the same dimensions as its Dacia sibling, and choice of engines; the mild-hybrid 1.2 TCe 130 that produces 96 kW, the mild-hybrid 1.2-litre Eco-G that makes 103 kW, and the 1.2 TCe 140 that develops 140 pferdestarke (PS) or 103 kW.
Completing the range of engines is the Hybrid 155 that combines the normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 1.4-kWh battery pack and a pair of electric motors for a total output of 155 PS or 114 kW.

The arrival of the Boreal will have a further knock-off effect as it will additionally become a third model under Renault alliance partner Nissan, which will be assembled at the Chennai Plant in India from 2026.
A move also involving the Duster, which could revive the Terrano name for a second time, the Indian-market Boreal will, reportedly, have seven-seats so as not to overlap with the five-seat Duster.
South Africa has expressed interest
Given Renault South Africa's hinting last year about its take on the Bigster possibly debuting in 2026 or 2027 on local soil, expect clearer details about the Boreal to be significant over the next few months.
As a reminder, the South African-spec Duster offers a choice of two powerunits: the mild-hybrid 1.2 TCe 130 that replaces the much loved 1.5 dCi turbodiesel, and the market unique, Daimler co-developed 1.3 TCe lifted from the Captur that cranks out 113 kW.

Used EV batteries power renewable energy push at Rome airport
Nissan is giving a second life to its EV batteries as part of a clean energy project at Rome's Fiumicino Airport. The Japanese carmaker has provided 84 used Leaf battery packs for a large energy storage system designed to help the airport reduce its carbon footprint. The system is part of a wider initiative known as Pioneer, supported in part by the EU's Innovation Fund. It forms a key part of Aeroporti di Roma's plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. In total, the battery energy storage system holds 10MWh of electricity. Nissan's contribution,— equivalent to 2.1MWh, is made up of battery units recovered from high-mileage vehicles and warranty returns. The 30kWh and 40kWh packs were expertly reconditioned to meet safety and performance standards before being put into service. The second-life batteries are being integrated by Italian engineering firm Loccioni, which is combining them with Enel's broader storage infrastructure. The system works in tandem with a solar farm consisting of 55,000 panels, which is expected to generate up to 31GWh of electricity per year. The electricity generated and stored will help power airport terminals and support the facility's internal grid, specially during peak demand. According to Nissan, the batteries are expected to stay in operation for at least six to seven years, even with daily use.

Dutch car-sharing firm plugs into Renault EVs with V2G technology
The global V2G market was worth $3.4bn (R60,694,874,240) in 2024, according to Global Market Insights, and is expected to grow by 38% annually between 2025 and 2034 to reach $80bn (R1,428,568,000,000). The Netherlands is an early adopter of V2G technology due to ambitious plans to electrify its transport and heating systems while also moving to renewables. Japan's Nissan has also recently supplied dozens of V2G-enabled Leaf and Ariya models to France and Spain. MyWheels said 500 of Renault's V2G-compatible cars, including its electric R5, will be on the road by next year. When not driving, the cars will be plugged into We Drive Solar's bidirectional chargers and the scheme's operators will be paid for electricity absorbed and sold to the grid. Grids have become increasingly unstable with growing electrification and as more intermittent renewable energy is fed into the system. 'Our research shows vehicle-to-grid technology could allow the growing electric vehicle fleet to become a significant asset to the grid, with vast storage potential locked up in electric vehicles,' said Madeleine Brolly, advanced transport analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. A key challenge ahead will be standardisation across manufacturers, which will be needed for it to be adopted at scale, she said.

Sauber's season turns a corner with Hulkenberg's top-five drive
Nico Hulkenberg lifted Sauber off the bottom of the Formula One standings with a fifth place at the Spanish Grand Prix for the future Audi team. Sunday's result, in a car with upgrades, was Swiss-based Sauber's best in three years and they left the Circuit de Catalunya eighth overall and ahead of Aston Martin and Renault-owned Alpine. They had not scored points since Hulkenberg was seventh in the Australian season-opener in March. "It was one of those Sundays where everything came together well," said Hulkenberg, who passed Ferrari's seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton for fifth. "Right from the beginning, we were in the mix. A strong start, a clean first lap and we were immediately able to fight for points. "Ironically, not having the best Saturday and saving a set of softs gave us a strategic edge with the tyre allocation. The safety car mixed things up a bit, and having the fresh compounds turned out to be a golden ticket." Hulkenberg has scored all of Sauber's points this season with Brazilian rookie teammate Gabriel Bortoleto, who finished 12th, yet to open his account in nine starts. Sauber, who become the Audi factory team next year, are level on 16 points with Aston Martin but ahead on placings. Alpine are last and five further adrift.
