Carragher makes Arteta sack prediction after Arsenal draw with Liverpool

Metro11-05-2025

Jamie Carragher has warned Mikel Arteta that Arsenal could start 'looking at how many managers can make that next step' should the club fail to win any trophies again next season.
It has been an immensely disappointing end to the campaign for Arsenal both domestically and in Europe, with PSG knocking the club out of the Champions League after Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions.
It means the Gunners will once again finish without any silverware to their name this term and Arteta has come in for a fair amount of criticism from fans and pundits alike, despite the obvious progress made under his watch at the Emirates.
Barring two Community Shield triumphs, the 2019/20 FA Cup remains the only trophy that Arteta has lifted during his managerial reign.
On Sunday afternoon, the north Londoners looked to be heading for a fourth straight defeat in all competitions as Liverpool raced to a two-goal lead in front of a rapturous Anfield crowd.

But the visitors dug deep in the second period to rescue a point from the top-of-the-table clash after Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino – who was later sent off – both struck on Merseyside.
Facing the media after the 2-2 draw, an irate Arteta branded his side's lacklustre first-half performance 'unacceptable'.
'What we did in the first half is nowhere near the level so to do it after that [fight back] is not acceptable. We reacted, great but it is unacceptable,' the Arsenal head coach said in his post-match interview with Sky Sports.
Carragher sang Arteta's praises for the consistently challenging at the top of the Premier League since the Spaniard took over the reins from Unai Emery in Unai Emery in 2019.
But the ex-Liverpool and England defender believes the Arsenal boss could face an uncertain future should it be a similar story for the club next season.
'I'm a massive fan of Mikel Arteta, I think he's a brilliant manager. The job he's done, to get Arsenal where they are,' Carragher said in the Sky Sports studio.
'Let's not forget, for a good few years it was them and Tottenham fighting for the Champions League positions.
'They made this jump to compete with Manchester City and they followed it up again last season. And they're the team that have pushed Liverpool this season.
'This season felt like it should have been their season. There's no doubt next season that the pressure will be on Mikel Arteta massively in terms of winning something and winning something big.
'The Arsenal board, if they don't do that [win a major trophy] will have a massive issue because they won't want to change their manager, but there will be that many people saying: five or six years without a trophy.
'They will be looking at how many managers can make that next step.'
Carragher says another trophyless season would leave Arsenal's board with a 'big conundrum' in 12 months' time.
'The problem with changing Mikel Arteta because, as I said, he's done a brilliant job at Arsenal,' he added.
'Arsenal could easily become what Chelsea are right now. They could go from a team coming second year in, year out to a team that doesn't actually get into the Champions League.
'That's the big conundrum that Arsenal as a football club will have in 12 months, if Arsenal go close again don't actually get across the line.' More Trending
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright, though, is confident Arteta still has the strong backing of club bosses, despite the club's inauspicious end to the season.
'I don't worry for him because I know how much the owners think of him, I know how hard he's working to get this right,' Wright said on Premier League Productions.
'Obviously, the forward is something we've missed out on and when you look at certain games, yeah, a forward would probably help us get it over the line.
'That is something I believe, in this next window, needs to happen.' Should Arteta be sacked if Arsenal don't win a trophy next season?

Arsenal dealt blow as dream target Nico Williams responds to transfer approach

Arsenal have seen their chances of signing Athletic Bilbao superstar Nico Williams take a hit after the winger was reported to have confirmed interest in a move elsewhere Nico Williams has told Bayern Munich he is open to joining them in a blow to Arsenal hopes. Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of the Athletic Bilbao winger and any plan to get a deal over the line has now only been made more difficult. Vincent Kompany's side have entered the running to land the star with Bayern chiefs Max Eberl and Christoph Freund holding talks with Williams' representatives. The Bundesliga giants have already missed out on Florian Wirtz this summer and have turned their attention to the Spain international, according to Sky Germany. ‌ Bayern are set to see space open up in their squad with the exit of Leroy Sane. The former Manchester City ace knocked back a move to the Saudi Pro League but travelled to Turkey on Wednesday ahead of a switch to Galatasaray on a free transfer. ‌ To be successful, Bayern will need to stump up Williams' €58 million (£48.1m) release clause to prise him away from Bilbao. But it is the Basque star's salary that could prove most prohibitive. Mirror Football understands that the 22-year-old wants to be paid more than £300,000-a-week to make him one of the bigger earners in Europe. That figure itself made a move difficult for Arsenal, while Barcelona, who have also been heavily linked with Williams, saw their plans to sign the player damaged by the demands. Athletic Bilbao have not given up hope of retaining their talisman's services either however. Reports in Spain claim that the La Liga side will offer an increase in salary and an immediate release clause should he extend his deal until 2027. After seeing Williams turn down multiple transfers away from the club in the past, the Basque side do not think its implausible to happen again. Athletic will hope their qualification for the Champions League proves helpful to their cause. Williams finished this season with 11 goals and seven assists for Bilbao after truly breaking out in 2024 with an impressive campaign as Spain won the Euros. Arsenal have long admired the winger but have been less keen to take on his wage demands. His current club are adamant they want to retain Williams' services over cashing in however. "I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico is part of that project, just like many other players," Bilbao president Jon Uriarte told Spanish outlet El Correo. ‌ "The project becomes easier if we keep our players - and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead." Speaking after he decided to remain with Bilbao last summer, Williams said: 'Many teams want you, I've had many offers to do things that another player would have done, but I'm happy here, Bilbao is my home. My heart is red and white." Though he hinted that may be a temporary situation when he added: "I had a talk with my parents and my brother, and we decided it was best to stay for another year.'

What are the aims of Cherries academy?

Following the release of a behind-the-scenes documentary focused on the Bournemouth academy, Cherries academy manager Sam Gisborne spoke to BBC Radio Solent about the youth setup at the club: "It's in a really good spot. Last season was our second season as a category two academy and we want to get to a point where we are a category one academy."Our mission is 'affect the 25' where every year we want to be affecting the 25-man squad that is involved in the Premier League. Our long-term vision is to develop our first team-captains."There is no standing still in the academy - we are in a really good spot but we still have a long way to go."Listen to the full interview with Sam Gisborne on BBC Sounds

Reid 30 years on: 'I had to find £700 from somewhere'

Former Sunderland manager Peter Reid - who twice won the Black Cats promotion into the Premier League - has been looking back on taking charge of the club 30 years ex-Everton and Manchester City player took the reigns in March 1995 with Sunderland battling relegation in the second tier, but with seven games of the season remaining, Reid oversaw just the one loss and managed to keep them to BBC Radio Newcastle in a special episode, Reid recalled: "They were great games, the Sheffield United one was a very important one and I always thank Craig [Russell] for coming on as a sub and getting the winner," Reid said."To be fair, the crowd played their part and obviously the players, the players were magnificent. I think we went to Derby and beat them as well which was a fantastic result."After the Sheffield United game, I remember going to the chairman and saying 'listen I need to get something for the players so give me £500 to take them out' and the bill came to about £1200 so I had to find £700 from somewhere."So I was fining the lads for mis-passing the ball in training and everything and once I got the £700 I told them 'it's over now lads' and I told them the story and they took it all in the spirit that it was meant."
