NMK Electronics and AVIXA take a stand #AccelerateAction2025
350 Certified Technical Specialist (CTS) -certified males in the GCC
Only 16 CTS-certified females in the GCC
This gap is more than just a statistical representation but a reflection of systemic barriers that limit access to technical training, mentorship programmes, and career progression for women in AV.
According to the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 i.e five generations from now to reach full gender parity, which is over a century before equality becomes the norm.
Understanding the urgency NMK Electronics, a Midwich group company, and a leader in AV distribution, partnered with AVIXA (Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association) to take bold, measurable action and the result was a transformative event at NMK experience center in Al Quoz, with 65+ industry women who gathered to put real change in motion. Adding further momentum to this initiative, brands like: Shure, Bose Professional, Barco Clickshare, and Microsoft stepped forward as supporters of the event, reinforcing their commitment to inclusivity and the advancement of women in AV. "The numbers don't lie, the gap in CTS certification is holding women back. And here's the truth: women in AV are just as capable, just as skilled, and just as deserving of opportunities. It is time to change the narrative." said – Ekta Puthran, Director Sales and Regional Marketing at Barco.
"We cannot afford to wait 135 years for gender parity—the time to act is now. Accelerating action means ensuring that women in AV & Tech have equal opportunities to thrive, lead, and shape the industry's future. The good news is, many men are already stepping up, advocating for inclusion, and driving change. Together, we can build a more balanced and progressive AV & Tech industry for all," said Maleeha Riaz, Marketing Manager at NMK Electronics.
Turning Talk into Action: Six Women Awarded Certified Technical Specialist (CTS) Certifications
The most impactful moment of the event came to life when NMK & AVIXA joined hands and took a stand against the certification gap by personally awarding six CTS certifications to aspiring women in AV. For many of the recipients, this was more than just certification, it was a validation. A signal that they belong in this industry and that their expertise is valued. "Education and accreditation are the keys to breaking barriers. If we want to see more women leading in AV, we must ensure they have access to the same training and credentials as their male counterparts," said Nicolas Cox, Managing Director at NMK Electronics.
Breaking the Silence: A Sound Engineer's Perspective
For Miriam, a UAE-based audio engineer, the journey in AV has been filled with challenges but also resilience. She shared her experience as a woman navigating a highly technical field, a story that resonated with many in the room. 'I often get asked, especially by men in the industry about why I chose this field, as if it is unusual to see a woman working in sound engineering. But for me, that challenge is exactly what makes it so rewarding. It is a mentally demanding job, and I love pushing myself beyond expectations. The idea that AV is a male-dominated field is only true until more women step in and prove otherwise. This industry isn't about gender—it's about passion, skill, and the willingness to take on the challenge. Women belong here just as much as anyone else,' said Miriam Sablouni, audio engineer at Levels AV. Her words were not just about the alienness that women face in the industry but they were about strength, passion, and the need for an industry that truly embraces talent, regardless of gender.
Beyond Certification: Building Confidence, Resilience & Leadership
The event not only focused on professional growth, but also emphasized mental resilience, emotional intelligence, and confidence-building as follows:
- Meditation, yoga, and breathing sessions to encourage self-awareness and focus
- Workshops on leading with emotional intelligence to equip women with leadership skills
- Talks on mental resilience and body confidence, ensuring women feel empowered inside and outside the workplace.
The event transformed into a focus group that brought together industry leaders, professionals, and aspiring AV specialists, creating a safe space for connection, mentorship, and inspiration.
A standout moment was the Pledge Wall, where participants as well as industry leaders came together to commit themselves to an actionable change either through mentorship, advocacy, or simply creating more opportunities for women in AV. It served as a powerful visual representation of collective responsibility and the industry's shared vision for a more inclusive future.
Call to Action: The Future Starts Now
The imbalance in CTS certification is just one example of the broader gender gap in technical industries that NMK Electronics and AVIXA are actively addressing. By creating opportunities for women to gain professional accreditation, fostering confidence through mentorship and leadership programs, and encouraging meaningful industry conversations, this initiative is more than just a one-time event, it is a commitment for a long-term change. The future of AV must be built on inclusion, where expertise is recognized regardless of gender. With continued action, collaboration, and accountability, NMK Electronics is determined to ensure that progress is not measured in generations but with real, measurable impact starting today.

You get a better lifestyle and safety in UAE, says Moldovan expat
Dubai-based CEO Elvira Jain has been in the UAE for 12 years and like most expatriates, says time flies in the Gulf. After a high-flying career as a fashion model, Moldovan-born Jain now runs a communications agency, Ellyse Management. During her career she has boasted collaborations with prestigious brands such as Gucci, Dior and Armani, and now, she's turning her hand to entrepreneurship in the Gulf's fashion capital. If you had to use one word to describe money what would it be? Opportunity. If you had to write a letter to money, what would you say? Due to money we can have the possibility of travelling and having better education and health. It's not the same everywhere but in Dubai you need resources to survive. How would you describe your relationship to money? I respect money. You need to use money smartly. I don't waste money and I calculate well. I do have an economics background, so I try not to overspend. Sometimes it is tricky, because I do like to spend, but I think money comes to people who also respect it and use it in the right direction. Also having a business and having created it by myself, I calculate everything and make projections and budget. How do you think this relationship was formed? When I was in school, aged 7-8, my parents used to pay me for every highest mark I used to get at school and I used to keep the money in a book, so I was really motivated to get better marks and more money. I was also one of the best in class. What good or bad lessons about money management did you learn from your mother? My mom sometimes tends to overspend and sometimes not spend much on unnecessary things so I try to also evaluate if it's worth to spend or not but sometimes is difficult. Who do you speak to about money matters and is it something you consider 'taboo'? I don't consider it a taboo. I can speak to my parents, my husband, and my kids . It cannot be a taboo since it is part of our daily life. Who has taught you the most about financial management? I learned a lot from my parents and from my husband. What do you think has been the most profound experience you've had so far in relation to money, good or bad, and what has it taught you since? When I used to travel as a model in different countries, they gave you a weekly allowance and you had to manage it. This taught me to spend only on what I really needed to. How do you think living in the UAE has changed your relationship with and perception of money? I can say that to live well you need money. The equation of money and income (in the UAE) is different compared to European countries. You get a better salary but then you also have to spend more on rent and monthly expenses. But of course, you get a different, better lifestyle and most of all, the UAE is the safest country to live in. If you could give your child or your younger self one piece of advice about money now what would that be and why? Spend only on what you really need because money comes to those who respect it. What do you value spending money on? It depends on what I need at that moment. I do like to pamper myself so there are also some spendings that we can't avoid as ladies. Do you long-term plan your finances, and if so, how? I like investing in real estate. What is your long-term goal or dream which is pegged to your finances? I wish to have a lot of properties in different parts of the world How much do you save each month? Since I'm a business owner, the income might vary, so savings are different. But I try to have a savings account and a different current account. How much do you plan to have by the time you are 65? I can't give a number because depreciation of money is real, so what might seem a lot now might be much less in the future. I try to think 100 times before investing so it's tough to say.

TAQA secures $2.3bln loan with participation of 3 UAE-listed banks
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) has secured an AED 8.50 billion corporate term loan facility to strengthen its balance sheet and support long-term growth. The two-year AED-denominated floating-rate facility, with a one-year extension option, will be utilized in phases to align with the group's capital and investment plans, according to a press release. Emirates NBD and FAB acted as joint bookrunners, mandated lead arrangers, and coordinators, while Mashreq Bank served as mandated lead arranger. The transaction will improve funding flexibility, diversify liquidity sources, and optimize its capital structure. Jasim Husain Thabet, CEO and Managing Director of TAQA, said: 'Securing this facility marks another step in delivering on TAQA's long-term growth strategy, reinforcing our ability to maintain a strong and flexible balance sheet to support future investments.' 'This facility demonstrates our ability to access competitive funding in our domestic currency, while retaining the ability to draw down in line with our capital and investment needs,' he added. The CEO concluded: 'The terms reflect the strength of our credit profile and the trust placed in us by our banking partners, ensuring we have the right financial foundations to continue delivering reliable and sustainable power and water to the communities we serve.' The facility adds to TAQA's $20 billion bond program and $3.50 billion credit line, strengthening its capacity to fund domestic and international investments in power, water, and low-carbon energy. In the first half (H1) of 2025, TAQA generated net profits after tax valued at AED 3.93 billion, versus AED 4.76 billion in H1-24. Taqa secures Dh8.5 billion term loan to boost liquidity and advance growth strategy
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa), one of the largest listed integrated utilities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, on Thursday announced it has secured an Dh8.5 billion corporate term loan facility. The facility is a two-year UAE dirham-denominated floating-rate loan, with a one-year extension option. Taqa intends to utilise the facility over time in a phased manner. Emirates NBD and First Abu Dhabi Bank were mandated by Taqa to act jointly as bookrunner, mandated leader arranger and coordinator while Mashreq acted as mandated lead arranger for the term loan facility. The use of dirham funding aligns with the group's dirham-based income profile and benefits from strong local liquidity, with Eibor offering a cost advantage over international benchmarks. The transaction enhances funding optionality, diversifies liquidity sources, and supports ongoing efforts to optimise the Group's capital structure and maintain the financial flexibility required to deliver on Taqa's long-term growth strategy. Jasim Husain Thabet, Taqa's group chief executive officer and managing director, said: 'Securing this facility marks another step in delivering on Taqa's long-term growth strategy, reinforcing our ability to maintain a strong and flexible balance sheet to support future investments. This facility demonstrates our ability to access competitive funding in our domestic currency, while retaining the ability to draw down in line with our capital and investment needs. The terms reflect the strength of our credit profile and the trust placed in us by our banking partners, ensuring we have the right financial foundations to continue delivering reliable and sustainable power and water to the communities we serve.' The facility offers Taqa greater financial flexibility compared to other available sources of funding, allowing drawdowns to be aligned with the Group's cash flow and investment schedule. The two-year tenor also aligns well with Taqa's maturity profile, as the group has no corporate debt maturities scheduled in 2027. This facility complements Taqa's existing corporate funding framework, which includes a $20 billion global medium term note (GMTN) programme and a $3.5 billion revolving credit facility. Together, these instruments provide the group with a well-balanced and diversified capital structure that supports both operational resilience and future growth. The facility also reinforces Taqa's financial readiness as it continues to execute on a strategic investment programme spanning domestic and international growth opportunities across power, water, and low-carbon energy.
