The social media posts have caused a wave of anxiety among the regular shoppers and fans of this market, but the true story is that though there was a sudden demolition drive – reportedly conducted on Saturday midnight by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) – the market is very much open, functional and not going to be moved anywhere! 'The market is open and welcoming shoppers as always. Please don't believe in the baseless rumours. This market has been the pride of Delhi for years and we're not going anywhere,' says Ashok Kalra, president, Sarojini Market Shopkeepers Association, adding, 'Unfortunately, the viral videos have caused us negative publicity and the footfall in the market has dropped.'

Having seen the viral videos of bulldozers tearing through sections of the market, another shopkeeper quashes claims of the end of an era for one of the city's most beloved shopping destinations. 'What actually happened is that like any other day, we brought down the shutters of our shops on Saturday night and went home. Just a couple of hours later, humein bahut sare calls aane shuru ho gaye ki market mein kareeb 100 NDMC officials bulldozers leke aa gaye hain aur shops tod rahe hain,' recalls Ashok Randhawa, president, Sarojini Nagar Mini Market Traders Association, adding, 'It's true that before all this happened, we were the ones who had been urging the authorities to deal with illegal hawkers; who have encroached quite a lot of space in the market that becomes inconvenient for shoppers. But, instead of checking about the nuisance that these create, the authorities targeted the licensed shops during the Saturday's demolition drive. Phir bhi humein itna nuksan unke dukane todne se nahi hua jitna ab customers ke naa aane se ho raha hai.'
Amid the shopkeepers' woes of low footfall, the Sarojini Market Shopkeepers Association issued a clarification and posted on X stating that the market is fully operational and not being shut down.
Meanwhile, when HT City reached out to New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), an official said: 'If established shops are extended beyond the allocated area and into pedestrian space then that is also encroachment. Our intention is only to enmake that the shoppers' access to the market is smooth.'

NDMC completes vendor survey, cert after verification
New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council claimed that it completed the vendor survey in its areas under the Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme 2019. According to officials, the records of all surveyed vendors under NDMC jurisdiction were available online, and any person with a claim or objection can approach the town vending committee within 15 days. Under clause 1.1.15 of the Street Vendors Scheme, the records of all surveyed vendors were made available online on Thursday, stated a public notice. "Any person with a claim or objection regarding the street vending application received or the information submitted by any applicant may submit such a claim or objection to the respective town vending committee within 15 days or up to Aug 21," it added. Vendors can visit to review the records and submit any relevant claims or objections within the stipulated time. "No submission will be entertained after the due date. For their convenience, a vendors' facilitation centre has also been established on the fourth and fifth floors of Pragati Bhavan on Jai Singh Road," the notice stated. "We have taken their locations too. After verifying the documents, the final eligibility of these vendors will be ascertained and they will be issued a certificate of vending (CoV)," NDMC stated. The council is, however, preparing an initial plan, which includes the identification of natural markets and vending zones, keeping in account the high-security zones. Delhi govt aims to simplify licensing, create unified portal to boost business environment
Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in a meeting discussed measures such as simplifying the licensing regime and data integration across departments to promote 'Ease of Living' and 'Ease of Doing Business' in the national capital, an official release initiative is part of a broader effort encouraged by the Centre to improve governance and facilitate investment in the capital, it meeting, held on Friday, focused on simplifying the licensing regime, removing redundant processes, and integrating data across departments to create a business-friendly environment in Delhi, the release said. Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Labour Minister Kapil Mishra, the Chief Secretary, Chairman NDMC, Commissioner MCD and heads of departments concerned with environment, trade, taxes, and licensing also attended the meeting. It was highlighted that the existing system, marked by fragmented databases, multiple licensing authorities and complicated fee structures, often results in harassment of applicants, corruption, and loss of Cabinet Secretariat, following a recent review chaired by the Prime Minister, had asked the Delhi LG to undertake specific short-term reforms to ease compliance and governance. Among the major issues discussed were empanelment of third-party auditors for fire clearances, creation of a common application form for No Objection Certificates (NOCs), extension of third-party certification for building plan approvals, and linking databases of agencies such as MCD, NDMC, DPCC, FSSAI, GST, and Labour government is also exploring the adoption of Tripura's self-certification model for industries with investments up to Rs 2 crore, and third-party audit for larger ones. It was also proposed to align MCD zones with revenue districts and bring local offices of departments such as health, education and PWD under the coordination of district AR Department has been tasked with developing a standardised inspection format for district-level review of services like roads, drains, hospitals and schools.
