Coffee Board member demands release of crop damage compensation to growers in Kodagu

Time of India13-07-2025
Madikeri: Coffee Board member Talur A Kishore Kumar of Kodagu has demanded that the MLAs take appropriate action to release crop damage compensation money to the coffee growers and farmers of Kodagu.
In a press release, he said it is ridiculous that recently Madikeri constituency MLA Manthar Gowda, along with a delegation of growers, met Coffee Board president MJ Dinesh and submitted a request regarding the hardships faced by the growers. He urged the MLAs to stop submitting requests but put pressure on the govt and rush to the aid of the farmers.
On July 3, Dinesh, along with Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Shrinivass Poojary, Kaup MLA Suresh Shetty, Coffee Board members, and board CEO Kurmarao, went to Delhi and met Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal.
They submitted a petition regarding the problems and challenges faced by coffee growers and requested him to come and provide assistance, and the minister responded well, he said.
The Union govt has already released NDRF funds to the state govt. However, Kishore Kumar alleged that two MLAs from Kodagu are not coming to the aid of coffee growers.
KG Bopaiah and MP Appachu Ranjan, who were MLAs during the previous BJP govt, released at least Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 57,000 to each of the affected growers in two years. He alleged that since the Congress govt came to power in the state, growers and farmers have not received any financial assistance, and compensation money has not been released. The two Kodagu MLAs have not just submitted petitions and kept quiet, but have put pressure on the state govt to take action to distribute the NDRF money released by the central govt to the farmers.
Kishore Kumar has also demanded that the state govt release separate compensation money.

Stray dog relocation row: Activists, lawyers clash as advocate is seen slapping commoners outside Supreme Court

With the Supreme Court issued a relocation order of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR residential areas to shelters on Monday, a fight escalated between animal activists and lawyers outside the apex court. In the ruling Supreme Court asked the authorities to relocate all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR residential areas to shelters within eight weeks to control rising rabies cases. However, dog lovers and lawyers – standing outside the Supreme Court – clashed with each other just after the Supreme Court order. Soon, the clash turned into physical assaults quickly. The incident was recorded by the bystanders from their camera, and now the video has gone viral. In the video, a lawyer and some people can be seen fighting with each other. Though the bystanders at the scene tried to intervene, both the dog lovers and lawyers outside the Supreme Court were seen shouting and abusing. Upset with Supreme Court order, a large number of animal activists and dog lovers gathered at India Gate in Delhi. Animal welfare and care services (AWC) took to X and wrote, "We are the voters and we want to practice our constitutional right. The Indian Constitution, particularly Article 51A(g), mandates citizens to protect and improve the environment, including wildlife, and to have compassion for all living creatures." Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court in its order to civic authorities in the Delhi NCR region, directed them immediately build dog shelters, move stray dogs and update the court. The apex court added that authorities must hire professionals who can tackle dogs, carry out sterilisation and immunisation and also have CCTVs to ensure dogs don't escape. "We are not doing this for us, it is for the public interest. So, no sentiments of any nature should be involved. Action should be taken at the earliest. Pick up dogs from all localities and shift them to shelters. For the time being, forget the rules," Justice Pardiwala had. Former Union minister Maneka Gandhi strongly criticised the order. Speaking to PTI, she said, "You have three lakh dogs in Delhi. To get them all off the roads, you'll have to make 3,000 pounds, each with drainage, water, a shed, a kitchen, and a watchman. That will cost about ₹ 15,000 crore. Does Delhi have ₹ 15,000 crore for this?"

GST court passes order against Subway franchisee for not passing rate cut benefit to customer

In its first order in profiteering case, the newly constituted GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has held Urban Essence, a franchisee of Subway Ltd, guilty of not passing GST rate cut benefit of Rs 5.47 lakh. The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Authority (GSTAT) order dated August 5 upheld the Directorate General of Anti-profiteering (DGAP) report that Urban Essence has profiteered to the extent of Rs 5.47 lakh by not passing on a commensurate reduction of the prices of food products to customers. The order in this regard was passed by GSTAT President Justice (Retd) Sanjaya Kumar Mishra. The appellate tribunal directed the Pune-based entity to deposit a sum of Rs 5,45,005 along with an 18 per cent interest from November 15, 2017 and deposit tha same in the consumer welfare fund in Maharashtra within 3 months. The case pertained to a customer complaint against Urban Essence for not passing the benefit of reduction of GST rate, on restaurant services, from 18 per cent to 5 per cent with effect from November 15, 2017. The GSTAT also looked into the issue of whether the entity was eligible to claim input tax credit (ITC) on some invoices. The DGAP, which investigated the case, had covered the period from November 15, 2017 to October 31, 2019, to check whether the GST rate cut benefits were passed to consumers. On December 1, 2022, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) was given the responsibility to decide on anti-profiteering cases under GST. Such cases were earlier decided by the National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA). From October 1, 2024, the Principal Bench of GSTAT has been empowered to examine anti-profiteering cases. AMRG & Associates Senior Partner Rajat Mohan said the DGAP vs Urban Essence decision marks the first final order from the GSTAT's anti-profiteering division, signalling that the division is now fully operational, with the President himself conducting hearings and delivering orders. "This sets the tone for a more structured and authoritative approach to anti-profiteering enforcement under Section 171. The Tribunal's stance-upholding DGAP's findings across all products and rejecting cost-based justifications-reinforces that GST rate cut benefits must be directly passed on to consumers, backed by strong documentation, or face decisive action," Mohan added
