Three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield retires after 9 seasons
June 24 - Whit Merrifield, a three-time MLB All-Star who last played for the Atlanta Braves in 2024, announced his retirement Tuesday after nine years in the big leagues.
In a statement released through his agency, Warner Sports Management, Merrifield cited his family -- namely a daughter born in March 2024 -- as a reason to step away.
"I was never talented enough to just show up and play," Merrifield said. "Baseball required my full focus and energy for me to compete at the level I wanted to, and I realize I can no longer give that effort.
"At this point in life, I'd much rather chase around a toddler than chase sliders."
The 36-year-old infielder, a ninth-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in 2010, spent more than six seasons in the minor leagues before making his major league debut at age 27 in 2016. Merrifield ends his career with 1,249 hits -- including 94 home runs and 256 doubles -- and a .280 batting average in 1,147 games.
He led the American League in stolen bases three times, finishing his career with 218 swipes.
"Since I've now had some time away from the game, I've had a chance to reflect on my individual career for the first time in my life," Merrifield said. "I'm proud of myself. The toughness I developed and the things I was able to accomplish, nobody outside of my camp thought possible."
Merrifield quickly established himself as a premier player for Kansas City after his call-up, earning MVP votes in 2018 after batting a career-best .304. He followed that up in 2019 with a .302 season that was highlighted by his first All-Star nod. He added another All-Star selection in 2021 and a third in 2023 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Merrifield signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024 but was released after batting .199 in 53 games. He finished the year with the Braves, with whom he hit .248.
"I loved all the moments," Merrifield said. "All the highs and even all the lows. I'm grateful for the way this game molded me. I can't wait to tell my story to my daughter one day."

June 25 - Nine-time All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving will decline his $43 million player option and instead plans to sign a three-year, $119 million contract to remain with the Dallas Mavericks, ESPN reported on Tuesday night. Irving, who will have a player option for the 2027-28 season, per the report, is recovering from a torn ACL which ended his season in March. He averaged 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 40.0 minutes in starting all 22 playoff games as the Mavs advanced to 2024 NBA Finals, where they lost to Boston Celtics in five games. For his career, Irving is averaging 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 34.5 minutes in 779 games (all starts) for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2011-17), Celtics (2017-19), Brooklyn Nets (2019-23) and Mavericks. (2023-present). He won an NBA title with the Cavaliers in 2016. The Cavaliers selected Irving with the No. 1 pick of the 2011 NBA Draft after his freshman season at Duke. Sirens select Colgate F Kristyna Kaltounkova No. 1 in PWHL draft
June 25 - After spending their No. 1 overall pick in the PWHL draft on Colgate forward Kristyna Kaltounkova, the New York Sirens traded up to acquire the No. 3 pick and selected Wisconsin center Casey O'Brien on Tuesday. With the Sirens' roster depleted by the expansion draft, general manager Pascal Daoust worked out a deal with the Toronto Sceptres to bolster the offense with standout scorers. In the swap, Daoust sent top defenseman Ella Shelton to Toronto for its first- and fourth-round picks (No. 27). The Sirens lost two of their top three scorers, Alex Carpenter and Jessie Eldridge, along with starting goaltender Corinne Schroeder to Seattle in the expansion draft and signing process earlier in June. New York scored a league-low 71 goals, with Carpenter and Eldridge combining for 20. The Sirens held the No. 1 pick in last year's draft as well, taking forward Sarah Fillier, who tied for the PWHL points lead last season with 29. Liam Delap nets first Chelsea goal to set up Benfica clash
Liam Delap hopes there are plenty more goals to come after scoring his first for Chelsea to help them into the last 16 of the Club World Cup. The former Ipswich striker was on target as the Blues beat Esperance Tunis 3-0 in Philadelphia to secure the runners-up spot in Group D. The Blues will now face Benfica – surprise winners of Group C, ahead of Bayern Munich – in the next round in Charlotte on Saturday. Delap's goal came moments after defender Tosin Adarabioyo had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time and put Chelsea into a commanding position. The 22-year-old took a pass from Enzo Fernandez, turned past one defender and flicked outside another before calmly rolling the ball into the net, although goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said made minimal effort to stop the shot. It represented Chelsea's first return on their £30million investment in Delap, who reportedly snubbed Manchester United to move to Stamford Bridge. Delap told the club's website, 'Obviously it is a really happy feeling and hopefully it is the first of many. 'I spoke to Enzo (Maresca) and he told me when he gets the ball to just run. Maresca, who made eight changes, was pleased with the performance of his side coming after their loss to Flamengo in their previous game. The Italian said: 'It was important to bounce back and win. Now we can start to think about the next one. 'It was very important to be patient and then when we found the goal it became a bit more open. 'We are happy for all the players, especially for the ones who have gone a long time without minutes. 'From 32 teams now we are in the last 16. Hopefully we can go to the last eight.'
