Every few years, the tires on your car wear thin and need to be replaced. But where does that lost tire material go?
The answer, unfortunately, is often waterways, where the tiny microplastic particles from the tires' synthetic rubber carry several chemicals that can transfer into fish, crabs and perhaps even the people who eat them.
We are analytical and environmental chemists who are studying ways to remove those microplastics – and the toxic chemicals they carry – before they reach waterways and the aquatic organisms that live there.
Microplastics, macro-problem
Millions of metric tons of plastic waste enter the world's oceans every year. In recent times, tire wear particles have been found to account for about 45% of all microplastics in both terrestrial and aquatic systems.
Tires shed tiny microplastics as they move over roadways. Rain washes those tire wear particles into ditches, where they flow into streams, lakes, rivers and oceans.
Along the way, fish, crabs, oysters and other aquatic life often find these tire wear particles in their food. With each bite, the fish also consume extremely toxic chemicals that can affect both the fish themselves and whatever creatures eat them.
Some fish species, like rainbow trout, brook trout and coho salmon, are dying from toxic chemicals linked to tire wear particles.
Researchers in 2020 found that more than half of the coho salmon returning to streams in Washington state died before spawning, largely because of 6PPD-Q, a chemical stemming from 6PPD, which is added to tires to help keep them from degrading.
But the effects of tire wear particles aren't just on aquatic organisms. Humans and animals alike may be exposed to airborne tire wear particles, especially people and animals who live near major roadways.
In a study in China, the same chemical, 6PPD-Q, was also found in the urine of children and adults. While the effects of this chemical on the human body are still being studied, recent research shows that exposure to this chemical could harm multiple human organs, including the liver, lungs and kidneys.
In Oxford, Mississippi, we identified more than 30,000 tire wear particles in 24 liters of stormwater runoff from roads and parking lots after two rainstorms. In heavy traffic areas, we believe the concentrations could be much higher.
The Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council, a states-led coalition, in 2023 recommended identifying and deploying alternatives to 6PPD in tires to reduce 6PPD-Q in the environment. But tire manufacturers say there's no suitable replacement yet.
What can communities do to reduce harm?
At the University of Mississippi, we are experimenting with sustainable ways of removing tire wear particles from waterways with accessible and low-cost natural materials from agricultural wastes.
The idea is simple: Capture the tire wear particles before they reach the streams, rivers and oceans.
In a recent study, we tested pine wood chips and biochar – a form or charcoal made from heating rice husks in a limited oxygen chamber, a process known as pyrolysis – and found they could remove approximately 90% of tire wear particles from water runoff at our test sites in Oxford.
Biochar is an established material for removing contaminants from water due to its large surface area and pores, abundant chemical binding groups, high stability, strong adsorption capacity and low cost. Wood chips, because of their rich composition of natural organic compounds, have also been shown to remove contaminants. Other scientists have also used sand to filter out microplastics, but its removal rate was low compared with biochar.
We designed a biofiltration system using biochar and wood chips in a filter sock and placed it at the mouth of a drainage outlet. Then we collected stormwater runoff samples and measured the tire wear particles before and after the biofilters were in place during two storms over the span of two months. The concentration of tire wear particles was found to be significantly lower after the biofilter was in place.
The unique elongated and jagged features of tire wear particles make it easy for them to get trapped or entangled in the pores of these materials during a storm event. Even the smallest tire wear particles were trapped in the intricate network of these materials.
Using biomass filters in the future
We believe this approach holds strong potential for scalability to mitigate tire wear particle pollution and other contaminants during rainstorms.
Since biochar and wood chips can be generated from agricultural waste, they are relatively inexpensive and readily available to local communities.
Long-term monitoring studies will be needed, especially in heavy traffic environments, to fully determine the effectiveness and scalability of the approach. The source of the filtering material is also important. There have been some concerns about whether raw farm waste that has not undergone pyrolysis could release organic pollutants.
Like most filters, the biofilters would need to be replaced over time – with used filters disposed of properly – since the contaminants build up and the filters degrade.
Plastic waste is harming the environment, the food people eat and potentially human health. We believe biofilters made from plant waste could be an effective and relatively inexpensive, environmentally friendly solution.

Doctors have discovered a new marker of one of America's deadliest cancers - opening up the opportunity for early diagnosis and treatment. Researchers at the University of California - San Diego looked at mice who were genetically engineered to mimic the early stages of pancreatic cancer, which kills nearly nine in 10 patients within five years. Looking at cells under a microscope, they found cell stress and inflammation could be early warning signs of the disease as it can cause cancer cells to activate the protein STAT3, which has been shown to help tumors survive and resist treatment. STAT3 then turns on the protein Integrin β3 (ITGB3) in mouse and human cells, which fuels the growth of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the most common form of pancreatic cancer. This causes PDAC to spread faster and become more difficult to treat. Inflammation and cellular stress cause by chemotherapy also activated STAT3, increasing ITGB3 expression and further spreading the disease. Based on the findings, researchers believe blocking STAT3 could stop tumors from forming while pancreatic cancer is still in its early stages. Because most pancreatic cancers are only diagnosed after they have already spread, this could improve the overall survival rate. David Cherish, study author and pathologist at UC San Diego, told Newsweek: 'Given the fact that STAT3 plays such an important role in many cancers and the fact that it controls so many genes prompted us to drill down on which genes in particular are associated with cancer development, progression and drug resistance.' The team also noted the findings could lead to early treatments fo lung, breast and skin cancers. Pancreatic cancer affects roughly 67,000 Americans every year and kills about 52,000. More than half the time, the disease is first spotted after it has already reached stage three or four due to its vague symptoms. These include abdominal pain, weight loss, back pain, jaundice and floating or clay-colored stools. This leads patients to assume their symptoms are from more benign causes like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). By the time it reaches stage four, the five-year survival rate is just three percent, making it virtually incurable. It's unclear exactly what causes pancreatic cancer, but smoking, obesity and diabetes are thought to increase the risk by inducing harmful inflammation that causes cells to divide and become mutated more easily. In the new study, published Tuesday in the journal Cell Reports, researchers genetically engineered mice to have a mutation in their KRAS gene, which raises the risk of lung, colorectal and pancreatic cancers. This was done to help mimic early pancreatic cancer in humans. The team found in the presence of inflammatory proteins and stress induced by low oxygen levels - which makes cancer cells more invasive and treatment resistant - STAT3 activates ITGB3 in both mouse and human pancreas cells, which accelerates the growth of pancreatic cancer cells. This created a harmful loop between STAT3 and ITGB3, which caused tumors to become more aggressive and spread more easily. However, when researchers used cancer drugs to target STAT3 early, cancer development slowed and became less aggressive, keeping it from spreading to other organs and becoming more difficult to treat. In total, STAT3 induces the expression of 10 genes, including ITGB3, which form a gene signature the researchers dubbed 'STRESS UP.' The team believes detecting the STRESS UP signal early can help predict whether precancerous cells will turn into pancreatic cancer and determine how aggressive a tumor may become. Cheresh said: 'Having knowledge of this gene signature in patients could be valuable since there are known drugs on the market for other diseases that block STAT3 activation and thereby inhibit the expression of the STRESS UP genes in cancer cells.' He noted STRESS UP could be used to help develop early screening tools for pancreatic cancer, as there is currently no way to test for it until symptoms develop. The team now plans to explore molecules that could stop inflammation from activating ITGB3 not only in pancreatic cancer but also other forms of the disease that can affect the surface of tissues. These include lung, breast and skin cancers.

Washington state will no longer release data on how many people choose to die by assisted suicide. The Washington State Department of Health (DoH) has scrapped its annual report showing how many people are choosing an assisted death, blaming budget limitations. By law, the health service is required to publish a yearly report that breaks down the number of deaths by age and demographics. It also includes accounts of the reasons patients choose an assisted death, which campaigners have said are an 'essential' guardrail to ensure vulnerable people are not being coerced into ending their lives. However, the health service said it has taken the 'difficult decision' to suspend producing the report to free up staff to 'prioritise patient safety and other critical work'. The move has sparked dismay among doctors and disability rights campaigners who warned that it creates 'serious risks of abuse'. Dr Ramona Coelho, a family medicine practitioner based in London, Ontario, told The Telegraph: 'An accountable assisted suicide regime requires oversight. 'Assisted suicide is not a medical decision; it is a legal act, with specific eligibility criteria and procedural safeguards that must be met. 'A lack of reporting creates serious risks of abuse, negligence, and erosion of public trust.' 'Transparency is essential' Experts have warned that scrapping reporting will lead to a lack of oversight of assisted deaths in the state. 'When the state plays a role in the premature deaths of its own citizens, transparency isn't optional – it's essential. But without full, accessible data on assisted suicide, the public can't know whether cases are rising or falling, or if vulnerable groups are disproportionately affected,' said Rebecca Vachon, the director for Health at Cardus. 'So, this isn't just a data issue; it's a question of life and death. If anything needs to be cut, it's assisted suicide itself – not the public's right to know.' Jessica Rodgers, a director at Patients Rights Action Fund, said scrapping reporting could lead to abuses going unreported. 'This data, which consistently shows patients request lethal drugs for reasons of disability, not wanting to be a burden and concerns around the costs of treatment, is the foundation of accountability,' she said. 'Simply to ignore this provision begs the question of what else is ignored and what abuses remain unreported.' 'No longer following own laws' Alexander Raikin, bioethics expert at the Ethics and Public Policy Centre, said the decision represents one of 'the largest assisted suicide programmes in the United States no longer following its own laws'. The state adopted the Death with Dignity Act in 2009, becoming the second US state after Oregon to legalise assisted dying. The law, which allowed terminally ill adults to request medication to end their lives, was expanded in 2023 to reduce the 15-day waiting period to receive lethal drugs to seven days, and allow nurses to prescribe and mail medication to patients. Since passing the legislation, the number of people in the state who have opted for an assisted death every year has increased by more than 500 per cent to 524 people, according to 2023 figures. While the most common age to choose an assisted death in Washington is between 75 and 84, there were 28 people aged under 54 who died under the scheme in 2023. The DoH has been locked in a funding battle over the Death with Dignity programme, which cost $225,000 in 2025. In a policy document, the department argued that current funding levels are 'insufficient to deliver data and reporting that reflect the department's commitment to data usability and transparency'. As a result, the DoH said it has made 'reductions', including ending its annual reporting.

July 23 (Reuters) - Missouri's Republican attorney general filed a lawsuit on Wednesday accusing reproductive healthcare provider Planned Parenthood of misleading women about the potential risks of using the abortion drug mifepristone. The lawsuit, opens new tab by the office of Attorney General Andrew Bailey claims Planned Parenthood tells patients that the drug is 'safer than many other medicines like penicillin, Tylenol, and Viagra," while not disclosing that up to 4.6% of women visit emergency rooms after taking it. The lawsuit in Missouri state court accuses Planned Parenthood of violating a state law banning deceptive business practices. The state is seeking millions of dollars in penalties, including up to $1,000 for each woman in Missouri who has been provided abortion pills by Planned Parenthood over the last five years. "We are going to hold these charlatans and death dealers accountable," Bailey said in a social media post. Planned Parenthood did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mifepristone is taken in tandem with another drug, misoprostol, during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, and won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2000. Medication abortions account for more than half of U.S. abortions, though 28 states including Missouri restrict access, according to the nonprofit Guttmacher Institute, which focuses on reproductive health. The FDA has repeatedly called mifepristone safe and effective as demonstrated over decades of use by millions of Americans, with rare adverse effects. According to the FDA, between 2.9% and 4.6%, opens new tab of women who take the drug then visit an emergency room, and up to 0.6% of women who use mifepristone are hospitalized. A widely-cited 2021 study that purported to show an increase in emergency room visits after using mifepristone has been retracted, opens new tab. In Wednesday's lawsuit, Bailey's office said that newer studies conducted since the administration of former President Joe Biden eased some restrictions on accessing mifepristone identified serious adverse effects in more than 10% of women who took a single dose of the drug.
