Charli XCX says ITV ‘complained about her nipples' at Brit Awards
Charli XCX criticised ITV for 'complaining about my nipples' during her acceptance speech at this year's Brit Awards.
The British pop star, credited with popularising the term ' Brat summer ', claimed the broadcaster had objected to her near-see-through black dress during Saturday's ceremony.
Charli XCX, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, sparked a round of applause and cheers from the crowd as she said: 'I heard that ITV complained about my nipples. I feel like we're in the era of free the nipple though, right?'
The 32-year-old singer-songwriter added: 'They put the clap track on, cool. Thanks for being on my side.'
Free the nipple, a movement which advocates for women to be allowed to go topless in public, first gained public attention in 2014 after Bruce Willis's daughter, Scout, walked half-naked through New York.
The movement has since been championed by British actors including Oscar-nominated Florence Pugh, and Emma Corrin who won a Golden Globe for portraying Diana, Princess of Wales in The Crown.
On Saturday, Charli XCX won five Brits, including for song, album and artist of the year. But she turned down requests from organisers to perform at the ceremony and had previously criticised the music awards for not nominating enough women.
Damian Christian, chairman of the Brit committee, confirmed that she had told organisers 'thanks for the offer, but I'm going to go and enjoy the night with my friends and family'.
Speaking about the success of her song Guess, featuring Billie Eilish, she said: 'I'm really happy that a song about underwear now has a Brit award, very important stuff and I'm sure that that proves something about songwriting but I'm not quite sure what.
'I always felt like an outsider, particularly in the British music industry, it feels really nice to get recognition for this album. I've not changed anything … I guess culture caught up with us and wanted to be on this journey.'
Charli XCX's sixth studio album Brat popularised the term as a person who has a 'confident, independent and hedonistic attitude to life' and was named word of the year by Collins Dictionary.
The album's 'slime-green' aesthetic was used by Kamala Harris, the former US vice-president, as promotional material in her presidential election campaign last July.
Charli XCX won album, artist, song, best-song writer and dance act of the year. They are the first Brits she has won and represent the second-most won by any artist in a single year in the awards' history, behind the British singer Raye, who won six in 2024.
She is expected to take a break from her music career and spend more time acting.

The Gold Season 2 on BBC One review: still a criminally good time
Even with only scattered historical references here and there, it's a romp. We return to the bowels of the Met Police, where DCS Brian Boyce (Hugh Bonneville) and his loyal deputies have been slogging away trying to chase down a trail that's gone very cold indeed. They narrowly missed nabbing convict John Palmer (Tom Cullen, suave as ever) at the end of season one; now, he's living the high life in Tenerife, swindling British tourists by selling them timeshare flats.

Clarke Carlisle wins £100k on The 1% Club for Soccer Aid
Comedian Lee Mack returned to present the show but this time he was joined by 100 celebrities and sports stars as opposed to the general public. They were put to the test in the quiz where 'the questions have nothing to do with remembering facts, but are all about logic and common sense', explains the Radio Times. The aim of the game was to make it to the end, answering the 1% question correctly to take home up to £100,000 for charity and they were successful. It's the 1% question... Three Lions, two words. What are they? #The1PercentClub At the very end of the show, only two celebrities remained with a chance at making the overall donation total £100,000. Unlike regular versions of the show, the celebrities were working together rather than against each other like members of the public would. While comedian Lloyd Griffith got the final question incorrect, former footballer Clarke Carlisle answered it correctly and won the prize money. Carlisle has also previously been named Britain's Brainiest Footballer. The prize fund included £1,000 from celebrities who were out of the show, having answered a question incorrectly. Former Leeds United defender Clarke Carlisle (once crowned Britain's Brainiest Footballer) has won £100k for UNICEF by absolutely smashing the 1% Club without even using a PASS. Leeds That 🍾👌👏🔥💪#footballnews #champions #marchingontogether #championship #footballlife ITV said: 'Find out how clever you are as Lee Mack presents the quiz where it doesn't matter how good you are at quizzes and where 100 contestants could win up to 100,000 pounds.' As pointed out by the Radio Times, the show isn't about knowing facts, it's about using your brain to answer the questions. Each player gets one pass which they can use to help them skip a question but once they have used it, an incorrect answer takes them out of the game. If they make it to the 1% question, they are asked to go down to the stage for the final question where they see if they are winners.
