Charli XCX says ITV ‘complained about her nipples' at Brit Awards

Charli XCX criticised ITV for 'complaining about my nipples' during her acceptance speech at this year's Brit Awards. The British pop star, credited with popularising the term ' Brat summer ', claimed the broadcaster had objected to her near-see-through black dress during Saturday's ceremony. Charli XCX, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, sparked a round of applause and cheers from the crowd as she said: 'I heard that ITV complained about my nipples. I feel like we're in the era of free the nipple though, right?' The 32-year-old singer-songwriter added: 'They put the clap track on, cool. Thanks for being on my side.' Free the nipple, a movement which advocates for women to be allowed to go topless in public, first gained public attention in 2014 after Bruce Willis's daughter, Scout, walked half-naked through New York. The movement has since been championed by British actors including Oscar-nominated Florence Pugh, and Emma Corrin who won a Golden Globe for portraying Diana, Princess of Wales in The Crown. On Saturday, Charli XCX won five Brits, including for song, album and artist of the year. But she turned down requests from organisers to perform at the ceremony and had previously criticised the music awards for not nominating enough women. Damian Christian, chairman of the Brit committee, confirmed that she had told organisers 'thanks for the offer, but I'm going to go and enjoy the night with my friends and family'. Speaking about the success of her song Guess, featuring Billie Eilish, she said: 'I'm really happy that a song about underwear now has a Brit award, very important stuff and I'm sure that that proves something about songwriting but I'm not quite sure what. 'I always felt like an outsider, particularly in the British music industry, it feels really nice to get recognition for this album. I've not changed anything … I guess culture caught up with us and wanted to be on this journey.' Charli XCX's sixth studio album Brat popularised the term as a person who has a 'confident, independent and hedonistic attitude to life' and was named word of the year by Collins Dictionary. The album's 'slime-green' aesthetic was used by Kamala Harris, the former US vice-president, as promotional material in her presidential election campaign last July. Charli XCX won album, artist, song, best-song writer and dance act of the year. They are the first Brits she has won and represent the second-most won by any artist in a single year in the awards' history, behind the British singer Raye, who won six in 2024. She is expected to take a break from her music career and spend more time acting.

Pop star behind ‘Brat summer' takes home major Brit awards

The pop star behind the phrase 'brat summer' has taken home five Brit awards despite previously rowing with its organisers. Charli XCX, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, declined to perform at this year's ceremony and has previously criticised the music awards for not nominating enough women. She won song, album and artist of the year at Saturday's awards ceremony following the success of her sixth studio album brat, referring to a person who has a 'confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude' to life. The term and its broader lime-green aesthetic went viral and was named 'word of the year' by Collins Dictionary. The Cambridge-born artist, 32, won each of the five awards she was nominated for – the others being best songwriter and best dance act. They are the first Brits she has ever won and represent the second-most won by any artist in one year in history, behind Raye who won six in 2024. Other Brit winners included Ezra Collective, who won group of the year, The Last Dinner Party, winner of best new artist, and Chappell Roan, the international artist of the year. Stormzy was named best hip hop, grime or rap Act, Jade won best pop act and Tyneside-born Sam Fender won best alternative or rock act. Charli XCX was in attendance at this year's ceremony but did not perform after turning down a request from event organisers. Damian Christian, chair of the Brit committee, confirmed that she had told organisers: 'Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to go and enjoy the night with my friends and family.' In 2023 she criticised the Brits for not nominating any females in the Artist of the Year category. 'We're doing everything right,' she said at the time. 'I don't think it's our fault, I think it might be theirs.' Charli XCX is now expected to take a break from her music career and spend more time acting. 'It's probably no music for quite a while,' she told The Sun this week. 'I also want to act now. I'm already there and thinking about that stuff a little bit more. 'The success of Brat and the success of the marketing of Brat is also, in ways, a curse. I'll pivot but whatever I do next will be compared. I'm aware that whatever comes next will be the albatross, so to speak.' The artist has already appeared in six films including Faces of Death, a remake of the 1978 horror film, I Want Your Sex, an erotic thriller, and dark comedy The Gallerist. She has also appeared in period fantasy 100 Nights of Hero with Emma Corrin and Sacrifice, which was inspired by Joan of Arc. Speaking last year, she said an archetypal brat was 'that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes, who feels herself, but then also maybe has a breakdown, but kind of parties through it'. The movement embraced messiness, body positivity and sultry style choices, marking a sharp departure from the preceding 'clean girl' trend, which had promoted 'wholesome' activities such as yoga, early nights and slicked back hair. Lexicographers at Collins Dictionary ranked brat top of the list as it had been 'embraced so widely' and had become 'one of the most talked about words of 2024'. In July, Charli XCX tweeted that 'Kamala IS brat', prompting the then-American vice president and presidential nominee to use her song '365' in a TikTok video. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, was also mocked when he attempted to jump on the bandwagon, claiming in a social media post that London's ultra-low emissions zone (Ulez) scheme is 'brat'. Charli was raised in Essex by her mother Shameera, a former nurse and flight attendant who came from a Gujarati family in Uganda, and her father, Jon, a Scottish entrepreneur. The 'XCX' part of her stage name is taken from the handle Charli used on Messenger, an online chat service when she was at school.

Charli XCX scores early win with song of the year at 2025 Brit Awards

British singer-songwriter Charli XCX has secured an early win at the Brit Awards. The star, full name Charlotte Aitchison, 32, is this year's most-nominated artist, with her song Guess, featuring US superstar Billie Eilish, taking the gong for song of the year. She beat names like The Beatles, Dua Lipa, Coldplay and Sam Ryder to win the gong at the event, which is being held at The O2 arena in London, hosted by actor and comedian Jack Whitehall. Congrats to @charli_xcx & @billieeilish for winning Song of the Year with Mastercard! 🎤🏆@BRITs #BRITs — MastercardUK (@MastercardUK) March 1, 2025 On the stage, she said: 'Thank you, this is cool, I'm really happy that a song about underwear now has a Brit award, very important stuff and I'm sure that that proves something about songwriting but I'm not quite sure what.' She also thanked Eilish for collaborating, saying she asked the US star to join her only three days before they recorded the song. US pop star Sabrina Carpenter, 25, paid homage to British culture as she opened the event, taking to the stage wearing a red sparkly military-style blazer dress. She walked down an aisle lit up with the Union flag, as performers dressed as King's guard soldiers followed her. Carpenter then changed into a red sparkly bra and shorts set as she performed her song Bed Chem on a large bed. She will receive the global success award, and is also nominated in the international artist and international song of the year categories. Jade Thirlwall spoke of her love for her 'Little Mix sisters' as she collected the best pop act award. An emotion Thirlwall said: 'Firstly, I need to thank the fans because that's why I won this award. Thank you so much for supporting me and relentlessly forcing everyone around you to vote Jade. I love you guys so much. I'm so grateful.' She also thanked her 'fabulous team' and her family and friends before praising her former bandmates. 'All my family and friends who always believed in me, thank you for making me feel like it was a realistic goal to be a pop star ever since I was a little girl,' she added. 'And finally, my Little Mix sisters. I love you so much. I wouldn't have this award without you, and you changed my life, thank you.' Winner of the Brits Rising Star award, Myles Smith, spoke ahead of the ceremony on the red carpet, saying having recognition so early on in his career felt 'incredible'. The Stargazing singer follows in the footsteps of Florence And The Machine, The Last Dinner Party and Adele in receiving the accolade, which is given to the artist the music academy believes will have the biggest impact in the coming year. Among the other celebrities gracing the red carpet were US singer Lenny Kravitz, singer and actor Jared Leto, pop star Paloma Faith and Rivals actor Danny Dyer. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown wore a metallic chain mail-style gown and Charli XCX embraced the gothic with a sheer black dress. Others included TV presenter Davina McCall, DJ Calvin Harris, TV presenter Maya Jama and singer Calum Scott. YouTube star and rapper KSI said his song of the year nomination for single Thick Of It, featuring US rapper Trippie Redd, is the 'cherry on top' after being 'clowned' for the track. He told PA: 'When I released the song, I was getting clowned. 'People online were streaming the song saying, like, 'What is this? This isn't good', but people kept listening to it. People kept streaming it. 'And then as soon as I got that Brit nomination, cherry on top man, it just brought a smile to my face.' Asked if he would like to add anything else to his repertoire, having pursued amateur boxing as well as a music career, he said he would like to 'try acting' and get involved with an action comedy TV series or film. Charli XCX will face tough competition for album of the year as she goes up against Dua Lipa's chart-topping third album Radical Optimism, Ezra Collective's third release Dance, No One's Watching, and Songs Of A Lost World by The Cure, the rock band's first release in 16 years. Last year Raye made history when she secured six awards, the most by an artist in a single year. The Brit Awards are broadcast live on ITV1 from 8.15pm.
