
More than 500 bird species face EXTINCTION in the next 100 years thanks to climate change, scientists warn
From the bare-necked umbrellabird to the helmeted hornbill, birds come in all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes and sizes.
But hundreds of species could go extinct in the next 100 years, researchers have found.
A new study predicts that climate change and habitat loss could cause more than 500 bird species to disappear in the next century.
And even with complete protection from human-caused threats, about 250 species could still die out, they warned.
'Many birds are already so threatened that reducing human impacts alone won't save them,' Kerry Stewart, lead author of the research from the University of Reading, said.
'These species need special recovery programmes, like breeding projects and habitat restoration, to survive.
'We face a bird extinction crisis unprecedented in modern times.
'We need immediate action to reduce human threats across habitats and targeted rescue programmes for the most unique and endangered species.'
The team examined nearly 10,000 bird species using data from the IUCN Red List – the world's most comprehensive source on the status of plant and animal species.
They predicted extinction risk based on the threats each species face.
Analysis showed large-bodied birds are more vulnerable to hunting and climate change, while birds with broad wings suffer more from habitat loss.
Some of the species at risk of extinction are birds found in the UK, including the Balearic shearwater - of which there are around 5,800 remaining individuals.
The great bustard, the world's heaviest flying bird, was one of Britain's most beloved species but was hunted to national extinction in the 19th century.
Thanks to conservation efforts, a population of around 100 birds has been reestablished in the UK - but it is still at risk of disappearing forever.
The beloved Atlantic puffin, a common sight off UK coasts during breeding season, is also one of the 500 species at risk of extinction.
Other species included on the list are rare visitors which occasionally stop in the UK on their migratory routes, including the sociable lapwing and the yellow-breasted bunting.
Globally species including the Itombwe owl, found in the forests of east-central Africa, the imperial woodpecker, which is endemic to Mexico, and the yellow-bellied sunbird-asity, found in Madagascar, are also at risk.
The research also identified which conservation actions will best preserve both the number of bird species and their ecological functions.
Professor Manuela Gonzalez-Suarez, senior author of the study, said: 'Stopping threats is not enough, as many as 250-350 species will require complementary conservation measures, such as breeding programmes and habitat restoration, if they are to survive the next century.
'Prioritising conservation programmes for just 100 of the most unusual threatened birds could save 68 per cent of the variety in bird shapes and sizes.
'This approach could help to keep ecosystems healthy.'
Stopping the destruction of habitats would save the most birds overall, the researchers concluded.
However, reducing hunting and preventing accidental deaths would save birds with more unusual features, which are especially important for ecosystem health.
The findings were published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.
Earlier this year the world's largest garden wildlife study revealed that starlings have dropped to their lowest number every recorded in the UK.
The RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch has shown that while house sparrows are still our most common bird, followed by the blue tit, starlings have been bumped down to fourth place by the woodpigeon.
Figures show that since 1979, there has been an 85 per cent decrease in the number of starling sightings in every British garden.
The number of woodpigeons spotted, however, has increased by an enormous 1,160 per cent.
HEAVY METALS LIKE LEAD CAN POISON BIRDS
Birds are easily poisoned by the heavy metals found in their environment.
Each heavy metal causes distinct symptoms and affects birds differently.
The three heavy metals which commonly poison birds are lead, zinc, and iron.
Common symptoms that a bird is suffering from heavy metal poisoning are:

Regurgitation of water
Listlessness
Weakness
Depression
Tremors
Loss of coordinated movements
Seizures
Zinc and iron are present in food and are required in small amounts for a healthy bird.
When abnormal amounts are present in the bird's body, the same heavy metals can lead to poisoning.
Lead poisoning is no longer as common as it once was thanks to increased awareness of the dangers.
Heavy metal poisoning with iron can lead to iron storage disease, which causes the the nutrient to deposit in the internal organs of the body.
This can lead to liver problems and damage other organs.

Policymakers often ignore forest regeneration in fight against climate change, research finds
June 24 (Reuters) - Naturally-regenerating forests are often ignored by policymakers working to curb climate change even though they hold an untapped potential to rapidly absorb planet-warming carbon from the atmosphere, scientists found in a research paper published Tuesday. These so-called secondary forests, which have regenerated themselves after being razed, often for agriculture, can help bring the world closer to the net-zero emissions target needed to slow global warming, the research published in the journal Nature Climate Change, opens new tab shows. That is because these young forests, which are made of trees between two and four decades old, can remove carbon from the atmosphere up to eight times faster per hectare than forests that were just planted, they found. It comes as companies worldwide are raising millions of dollars to regrow forests from scratch to generate carbon credits they can sell to polluting industries seeking to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. Secondary forests, on the other hand, are often not allowed to regenerate themselves for long enough to benefit the climate, either because they are cleared or because they fall prey to fires or pests. Across the tropics, they found, only 6% of secondary forests reach two decades of regrowth. "It's a constant cycle of deforestation," said Nathaniel Robinson, one of the authors and a scientist at the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry. He added that their vulnerability "is likely tied to policy loopholes." Robin Chazdon, a research professor at the Forest Research Institute of the University of the Sunshine Coast, in Australia, who was not involved, said the refined evaluation of the global carbon mitigation potential of regrowing forests had important implications that could shape new climate policy. Last week, Reuters revealed how a loophole in the Amazon Soy Moratorium, an agreement signed by the world's top grain traders that they would not buy soy grown on recently deforested land, has allowed Brazilian farmers to market soy grown in razed secondary forests as deforestation-free. The Moratorium, like many conservation policies around the world, protects old-growth rainforests, but not regrown ones. In the Brazilian Amazon, half of secondary forests are cleared within eight years of regrowing, the scientists found. "The most rapid and largest carbon removal comes from these young secondary forests," said Susan Cook-Patton, a reforestation scientist at The Nature Conservancy, and one of the authors. But, she added, these forests "just aren't often appreciated."

Cardiff's Trelai Park excavation discovers Bronze Age burial site
An archaeological dig has uncovered an ancient burial ground underneath popular playing fields in Cardiff. Volunteers at a heritage project excavation said they found a number of pits at Trelai Park near Caerau Hillfort, with at least three holding a small amount of cremated human remains. The remains, which date back to the Bronze Age, were found next to a roundhouse previously discovered by the project which was said to potentially be the earliest house found in Oliver Davis, Caerau and Ely Rediscovering (CAER) Heritage Project co-director, said the discovery was "hugely exciting" and provided a window into the lives of Cardiff residents from over 3,000 years ago. "The fact that the cremations have been buried so close to the roundhouse suggests they may have been laid there to remember cherished family members," he said."It could also mean the site held a ceremonial significance to people at the time." The fourth phase of the project's archaeological investigation also discovered a new structure next to the roundhouse previously found. It was next to the foundations of this smaller building where the pits were located, along with evidence of a timber circle further down which experts believe may date to the Early Bronze Age around 2000-1600 are now working to piece together the significance of the latest finds, which suggest the site could be more expansive than previously Davis said: "The smaller structure we have found sits very near to the original roundhouses we discovered in 2023, these structures were luxurious and spacious."He added the smaller structure could be an additional house for another family, or maybe an ancillary building used for preparing food and craft-working. Trelai Park is a well-used location for sports teams and dog walkers and is half a mile from Caerau Hillfort, a heritage site of national significance. Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman and medieval finds have all previously been discovered by archaeologists at the site. Dr Davis said the area, which was only 650 ft (200m) away from a Roman Villa, had been an important place over thousands of years. "It's providing us with a window onto some of the very earliest Cardiff residents who were living here in Caerau and Ely over three millennia ago," he said. "The work now begins to carefully dig through each layer, sifting through the materials we are finding here on an hourly basis. It's a real team effort." Volunteer Hannah Secker, 19, from Grangetown, has finished her A Levels and wants to study archaeology and ancient history at degree said: "It's unbelievable finding artefacts that could be 3,000 years old and thinking about the people that have walked on this ground before us."Dan Queally is due to graduate from Cardiff University with a BA in archaeology and chose to do his dissertation on the CAER project. "It's not just about the archaeology that I've learned about, it's about seeing the difference a project like this can make to people here and now," he said. "It's been a big perspective shift for me." According to Dr David Wyatt, CAER co-director, the finds from Trelai Park "just keep coming". "It's not difficult to argue that Trelai could be one of the most important parks for heritage in south Wales," he said. "It really has all the potential to be a popular and thriving tourist attraction which could hugely benefit the local communities."Mike Tate, headteacher of Cardiff West Community High School metres away from the site, said the school saw real value in its links to the project. "Our pupils learn about the history of the area in which they live and they, literally, get their hands on the past."

Children with debilitating genetic condition denied early life-changing test
Children suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) – a rare but debilitating genetic condition – are being denied a simple test at birth which could give them the chance of a normal life. Every month in the UK, four babies are born with SMA. If left undiagnosed and untreated, many children with the most common form of SMA, type 1, do not live beyond their second birthday. Yet a test for the condition is not included in the newborn national screening programme – unlike in many other countries, including Ukraine, which introduced the test during the war against Russia. And having that test early on can be vital, as there are now treatments, including a gene therapy, which can halt the disease progression. Professor Giovanni Baranello, Professor of Paediatric Neuromuscular Disorders at Great Ormond Street Hospital, told us that with the treatment, babies will go on to have a normal life: 'They will not develop symptoms, he said. 'So we can basically revert, you know, the progression and natural course of the condition.' SMA causes muscle weakness, breathing and swallowing. Sebastian Stezaly was diagnosed at four months, simply because his mother suspected something was wrong and insisted he was tested, which they had done privately. He began treatment at five months but he had already lost muscle use in his legs and his speech was affected. All for the lack of the newborn test, which could be included in the heel prick test given to all babies at five days old. In 2018 the UK National Screening Committee decided not to recommend to the government that it should add SMA to the national screening programme. Two years ago, they said they would launch an in-service evaluation to gather further evidence. A call for people to take part in the research is underway and the Department of Health says it's working closely with families and campaigners – but it wouldn't say why there has been a delay nor why this evaluation which was once UK-wide, has now been scaled back to just 60 percent of England alone.
