UK to buy F-35 fighter jets capable of carrying US nuclear warheads

India Today5 hours ago

The United Kingdom is planning an upgrade to its nuclear defence. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the UK will buy 12 new F-35A fighter jets from the United States. These jets can carry normal weapons along with powerful US nuclear bombs. This is one of the biggest changes in Britain's nuclear defence since the Cold War. These US bombs are expected to be kept in the UK, which has not happened since 2008.advertisementUK Prime Minister Starmer said, "In an era of radical uncertainty we can no longer take peace for granted. These aircraft will strengthen our armed forces and support communities across the country through our defence industry."
The new aircraft will be stationed at Norfolk's RAF Marham. In order to prevent enemy attacks, they will be a part of NATO's program that shares nuclear power amongst its members. The UK will continue to abide by all international agreements and regulations. As in Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Turkey, the United States will continue to control nuclear weapons.JETS WILL CARRY STRONG NUCLEAR BOMBSThe F-35A aircraft are capable of carrying the B61-12, a unique kind of bomb. These bombs are extremely powerful. They can detonate at 0.3, 1.5, 10, and 50 kilotons, according to the Federation of American Scientists. In contrast, the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima during World War II killed up to 140,000 people and had a 15 kiloton strength.advertisementThe UK's Ministry of Defence does not usually share where nuclear weapons are stored. However, there are vaults at RAF Marham where weapons were kept in the past. There are also older nuclear storage sites at nearby RAF Lakenheath, which is used by the US Air Force.Officials stated that they are expected to support more than 20,000 jobs and involve over 100 UK-based businesses. The jets are made by US company Lockheed Martin. The government also says the F-35A is cheaper than the older F-35B model, saving up to 25% on each aircraft. The UK plans to eventually buy up to 138 of these jets.Starmer said, "Supporting 100 businesses across the country and more than 20,000 jobs, these F35 dual capable aircraft will herald a new era for our world-leading Royal Air Force and deter hostile threats that threaten the UK and our allies."NATO's secretary general, Mark Rutte, welcomed the announcement. He called it "a robust British contribution to the alliance." UK Defence Secretary John Healey said the decision fits into a "NATO-first" strategy and will also boost the UK economy. This comes as the most recent UK defence review issued warnings about the possibility of future attacks on British territory. The review said, "For the first time in many years, we have to actively prepare for the possibility of the UK homeland coming under direct threat, potentially in a wartime scenario."The review also said Russia remains the biggest threat.- EndsMust Watch

Trump's F-bomb, Biden's son of b**ch... When US presidents swore in public

Donald Trump is known for doing things differently. On Tuesday (June 24), he became the first US president to swear on 'live' TV when he used the F-word to express his frustration with Iran and Israel for violating the ceasefire just hours after it came into effect. However, American leaders have been caught using expletives in the past read more US President Donald Trump speaks with reporters before boarding Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House. It is during this interaction that he dropped the F-bomb. AP What does one do when one is frustrated? Usually, one swears or curses, using the F-word. But what if you are the president of the United States of America? Well, Donald Trump on Tuesday showed he's no different from us when he too used the swear word to express his frustration that Israel and Iran appeared to be violating the ceasefire that he just celebrated going into effect. But, despite the hoopla over Trump swearing on live camera, it is not unheard of. There have been many instances of the US commander-in-chief showcasing their inner potty mouth. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Trump's F-bomb heard around the world The world's media dedicated much of Tuesday (June 24) covering the ceasefire in the war between Israel and Iran and Donald Trump's role in brokering it. But before Trump could even celebrate the breakthrough, Israel and Iran appeared to have violated it. Just two-and-a-half hours after the ceasefire came into effect, Tel Aviv accused Tehran of launching missiles at the Jewish nation. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said he had directed Israel's armed forces to 'respond forcefully' to what he called Iran's 'violation of the ceasefire'. And when asked to respond to the two warring nations' actions, Trump appeared agitated. 'There was one rocket that I guess was fired overboard after the time limit and now Israel is going out. These guys [have] got to calm down,' he said, speaking to reporters before heading to the Nato summit in The Hague. The US president added that he didn't like 'plenty of things' he saw. 'I didn't like the fact that Israel unloaded right after we made the deal,' he said, referring to the ceasefire he announced earlier. 'They didn't have to unload.' 'We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the f**k they're doing,' Trump added, dropping the f-bomb . President Trump on Israel and Iran: "We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the fuck they're doing." — CSPAN (@cspan) June 24, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Presidential hot-mic moments Trump's use of a swear word on live cameras surprised many; American presidents have typically refrained from using it publicly, even when angry or frustrated. But it isn't the first time that an American president has been caught swearing. In 2018, Trump referred to Haiti and African nations as 's**thole countries', asking why the US would accept more immigrants from there rather than places like Norway. Unsurprisingly, his remarks spurred anger; Haiti's government said Trump's comments shows a 'racist view of the Haitian community', while El Salvador sent a formal letter of protest to the US saying the president had 'implicitly' accepted the use of 'harsh terms detrimental to the dignity of El Salvador and other countries'. In March 2010, then Vice President Joe Biden was caught out by an amplified microphone, telling his boss, Barack Obama, that passing the Affordable Care Act was a 'big f***ing deal'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD And 12 years after that incident, Biden once again let it rip when he called Fox News reporter Peter Doocy a 'stupid son of a b**ch.' The incident when happened Doocy called out to Biden saying, 'Do you think inflation is a political liability going into the midterms?' 'No, it's a great asset,' Biden snarked. 'More inflation. What a stupid son of a b**ch.' Biden: What a stupid son of a bitch — Acyn (@Acyn) January 24, 2022 Later, Doocy said that President Biden called to apologise shortly after the briefing ended. And Biden's predecessor, Barack Obama, too had his own hot-mic moments. In 2009, he referred to rapper Kanye West as a 'jacka**' after the rapper interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD President Obama called Kanye West a 'Jackass' in 2009. As always, President Obama was right. — Jack Cocchiarella (@JDCocchiarella) December 2, 2022 Obama also referred to his 2012 presidential rival, Mitt Romney as a 'serial bullshi***r' in a Rolling Stone magazine. Republican presidential candidate George W Bush with his vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney. File image/Reuters And just like Biden and Obama, George W Bush also had a hot-mic moment. While campaigning to be president in 2000, Bush leaned over to his running mate, Dick Cheney, and commented on the presence of New York Times reporter Adam Clymer. He, unknowingly, called the journalist a 'major-league a**hole.' Bush later joked about the incident, referring to Clymer as a 'major-league ass…et' in a taped message played at a press corps dinner. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD But many believe that no other US president cursed and swore as much as Harry Truman. He once called General Douglas MacArthur a 'dumb son of a b**ch' and Richard Nixon a 'shifty-eyed god***ed liar.' In most of these cases, the US leader has apologised for abusing. But, Russell Riley, a presidential historian at the Miller Center at the University of Virginia, told NPR that it is highly unlikely that Trump would show any remorse for his use of the swear word. 'The question is whether you brazen it out or you apologise,' Riley said. 'And I'm sure in this case the president will just brazen it out.' With inputs from agencies

'No space': Massive protests in Venice over Jeff Bezos' wedding

This weekend's star-studded Venice wedding of multi-billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez has galvanized activist groups that are protesting it as a sign of the growing disparity between the haves and have-not's as well as disregard of the city's residents. Critics also cite Amazon's labor practices, ongoing tax disputes with European governments and Jeff Bezos's political associations as additional reasons for concern. (Reuters) About a dozen Venetian organizations, including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners and university groups, have united to protest the multi-day event under the banner 'No Space for Bezos,' a play on words also referring to the bride's recent space flight. They have staged small-scale protests, unfurling anti-Bezos banners on iconic Venetian sites. They were joined this week by Greenpeace and the British group 'Everyone Hates Elon,' which has smashed Teslas to protest Elon Musk, to unfurl a giant banner in St. Mark's Square protesting purported tax breaks for billionaires. 'IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX,' read the banner, which featured a huge image of Bezos. Police quickly took it away. There has been no comment from Bezos' representatives on the protests. The local activists had planned a more organized protest for Saturday, aiming to obstruct access to canals with boats to prevent guests from reaching a wedding venue. Then they modified the protest to a march from the train station after claiming a victory, asserting that their pressure forced organizers to change the venue to the Arsenale, a more easily secured site beyond Venice's congested center. Also read: 'Pay more tax': Giant banner targeting Jeff Bezos appears in Venice before lavish wedding 'It will be a strong, decisive protest, but peaceful,'' said Federica Toninello, an activist with the Social Housing Assembly network. 'We want it to be like a party, with music, to make clear what we want our Venice to look like." Among the 200 guests confirmed to be attending the wedding are Mick Jagger, Ivanka Trump, Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry and Leonardo DiCaprio. Venice, renowned for its romantic canal vistas, hosts hundreds of weddings each year, not infrequently those of the rich and famous. Previous celebrity weddings, like that of George Clooney to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in 2014, were embraced by the public. Hundreds turned out to wish the couple well at City Hall. Bezos has a different political and business profile, said Tommaso Cacciari, a prominent figure in the movement that successfully pushed for a ban on cruise ships over 25,000 tons traveling through the Giudecca Canal in central Venice. 'Bezos is not a Hollywood actor,'' Cacciari said. 'He is an ultra-billionaire who sat next to Donald Trump during the inauguration, who contributed to his re-election and is contributing in a direct and heavy way to this new global obscurantism.'' Critics also cite Amazon's labor practices, ongoing tax disputes with European governments and Bezos' political associations as additional reasons for concern. Activists also argue that the Bezos wedding exemplifies broader failures in municipal governance, particularly the prioritization of tourism over residents' needs. They cite measures such as the day-tripper tax — which critics argue reinforces Venice's image as a theme park — as ineffective. Chief among their concerns is the lack of investment in affordable housing and essential services. City officials have defended the wedding. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro called the event an honor for Venice, and the city denied the wedding would cause disruptions. "Venice once again reveals itself to be a global stage,'' Brugnaro told The Associated Press, adding he hoped to meet Bezos while he was in town. Meanwhile, a Venetian environmental research association, Corila, issued a statement saying Bezos' Earth Fund was supporting its work with an 'important donation.' Corila, which unites university scholars and Italy's main national research council in researching Venetian protection strategies, wouldn't say how much Bezos was donating but said contact began in April, well before the protests started.

Tulip Siddiq is up against anti-India Muhammad Yunus...., what's her connection with Sheikh Hasina..., she is based in... Bangladesh's interim government chief and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been accused of interfering in British politics and damaging personal reputation. This allegation has been made by Tulip Siddiq, a British Labour Party MP and niece (sister's daughter) of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Tulip has accused Muhammad Yunus and Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of running a well-planned smear campaign against her motivated by 'political vendetta'. Who is Tulip Siddiq? Tulip Siddiq is the niece of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Tulip's mother, Sheikh Rehana, is Sheikh Hasina's younger sister. Thus, Tulip and Sheikh Hasina have a mother-daughter and sisterly family relationship. Tulip Siddiq, who lives in London, resigned as Britain's finance minister earlier this year after corruption allegations against her family. She represents the ruling Labour Party from the Hampstead and Highgate constituency of the British capital. Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation against Siddiq in connection with the previous government led by Sheikh Hasina. Hasina's government was ousted last year following massive protests led by students. 'It is time for the Chief Adviser (Yunus) and the ACC to stop their completely false and unlawful campaign to malign Siddiq's reputation and interfere with his public service,' said the letter sent by Siddiq's lawyers to Yunus. According to Sky News, Siddiq's legal team claims the interim leader has been unfairly biased in the investigation against him. Siddiq had requested a meeting with Yunus during his visit to the UK earlier this month, which the Chief Adviser rejected.
