Viasat Unveils HaloNet Portfolio for Near-Earth Communications

Yahoo2 days ago
Viasat, Inc. VSAT has introduced its new HaloNet portfolio — a modular set of capabilities built on next-generation connectivity architecture — that seamlessly integrates space and terrestrial networks into a unified service offering. HaloNet aims to revolutionize near-Earth communications with a flexible, multi-orbit network and data services tailored to specific mission requirements developed by Viasat Government and its Defense and Advanced Technologies segment.
HaloNet supports simultaneous connectivity to thousands of space vehicles across various orbital inclinations, including polar and retrograde, at any latitude, serving missions up to 1,100 km in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit. The portfolio offers a turnkey launch and orbital communications solution, combining multi-band GEO-relay and Direct-to-Earth (DTE) satellite communications for diverse mission needs.
As government and commercial LEO operations expand rapidly, the need for an agile, reliable and secure communications infrastructure has grown. These operators require the ability to transport mission data back to Earth efficiently for analysis, manage real-time demands and latency and maintain continuous spacecraft contact for command and control.
The platform integrates Viasat's advanced space and ground capabilities, delivering a unified approach to command, control and data dissemination. Key services include Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) Data Relay Service via L-band for secure, low-latency links; Launch Telemetry DRS for real-time data relay during launches without dedicated downrange stations; High-Capacity DRS via Ka-band for on-demand high-volume data transmission; Direct-to-Earth service through Viasat's Ground Station as a Service (GSaaS) network spanning six continents; and Mobile Command & Control through deployable satellite gateways for secure operations from virtually any location.

By dynamically routing data via GEO relay satellites over L-band, Ka-band, or optical links—with speeds ranging from tens of Kbps to more than 10 Gbps—HaloNet ensures secure, resilient and adaptable data transport. With its comprehensive, multi-band and multi-path solutions, HaloNet is positioned to meet the evolving demands of both government and commercial missions, delivering reliable connectivity and real-time capabilities for critical scientific, defense and commercial operations.
Viasat's Satellite Services business is progressing well with key metrics, including ARPU (average revenue per user) and revenues, showing impressive growth. ARPU is growing on the back of a solid retail distribution network, which accounts for a rising proportion of a high-value and high-bandwidth subscriber base. Furthermore, the growing adoption of in-flight Wi-Fi services in commercial aircraft is proving conducive to business growth. Viasat's impressive bandwidth productivity sets it apart from conventional and lower-yield satellite providers that run on incumbent business models.
Recently, Viasat reported strong first-quarter fiscal 2026 results, wherein both top and bottom lines beat the respective Zacks Consensus Estimate. Solid momentum in aviation services, information security and cyber defense, space and mission systems is fostering growth. Its strong bandwidth productivity sets it apart from conventional and lower-yield satellite providers that run on incumbent business models. For fiscal 2026, management expects low single-digit revenue growth and flattish adjusted EBITDA year over year.

5 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks to Buy and Hold for the Next Decade

Key Points Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor are slated to profit from the huge AI computing power buildout. Meta Platforms and Alphabet are using AI to improve advertising. Amazon's cloud computing division is seeing strong AI demand. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › The best investing strategies involve buying great companies and holding them over long periods to let them be, which has yielded impressive returns if you picked the right businesses. Among the top performers over the past decade have been Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL). I removed Nvidia from the chart below because it's up over 30,000% in the past decade, which skews the graph, but the other four have also done phenomenally well. The "worst" performer of the remaining four has been Alphabet, with its stock rising nearly five times in value. These five stocks have had a strong run over the past decade, but I still believe they are excellent picks for the next decade, mainly due to the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI). They are at the top of my list right now, and I think buying shares with the mindset of holding for the next decade is a wise investment strategy. Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor are providing AI computing power All five of these stocks are benefiting in various ways from the AI race. Nvidia makes graphics processing units (GPUs), which are currently the most popular computing hardware for running and training AI models. It owns this market, and its dominance has allowed it to become the world's largest company. There's still a huge AI computing demand that hasn't been met, which bodes well for Nvidia's future. Because of this, it remains one of the best stocks to buy and hold over the next decade. Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC for short) is a manufacturer that produces chips for many of the major players in AI, including Nvidia. These companies don't have chip production capabilities, so they farm that work out to TSMC, which has earned its reputation for being the best foundry in the world through continuous innovation and impressive yields. There are few challengers to its supremacy, and this position will help it continue to be a market-crushing stock for the foreseeable future. Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor are seeing huge growth right now because they're providing the computing power necessary for AI. The next three are also benefiting and will likely see even more success over the next decade. More AI applications will rise over the next few years At first glance, Amazon doesn't seem like much of an AI company. However, it has large exposure through its cloud computing wing, Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is the largest cloud computing provider. It's seeing strong demand for increased computing capacity for AI workloads. With this demand expected to rapidly increase over the next decade, this bodes well for AWS, which makes up the majority of Amazon's profits, helping drive the stock to new heights. Meta Platforms is developing its own in-house generative AI model, Llama. It has several uses for it, but the biggest is maintaining its role at the top of the social media world. Meta owns two of the biggest social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, which generate most of their money through ad revenue. The company has integrated AI tools into its ad services and has already seen an uptick in interaction and conversion rates. This effect will become even greater as generative AI technologies improve, making Meta a strong stock pick for the next decade. Lastly is Alphabet. Many think Alphabet will be displaced by AI because it gets the majority of its revenue through Google Search, which is seen as a target for AI disruption. However, that hasn't happened yet, and Google Search continues to get larger, with revenue rising 12% in the second quarter. Part of its success can be attributed to the rise of its Search Overviews, which are a hybrid between a traditional search engine and generative AI. This feature has become popular and could be enough to keep Google on top in search, allowing it to achieve new heights over the next decade. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now? Prop B discussion hints at renewal question

Joplin council members and city officials are beginning talks on whether to try to renew the Proposition B sales tax because the police and fire pension fund it was put in place to address may close out several years earlier than expected. The half-cent tax approved by voters in 2019 addressed a low funding ratio in the Police and Firemen's Pension Fund. It is commonly called the pension tax. It was intended to bring the pension fund up to a funding level of 120% of benefits owed. It was projected that could take up to 12 years. But the pension plan's actuary recently projected that the plan could be fully funded, or reach the agreed upon 120% level of benefits owed, in early 2027. That would be five years earlier than the 12-year sunset given to fully fund pension obligations when the tax was proposed to voters. The actuarial report states that the plan's funded ratio as of Oct. 31, 2024, was at 90.1%. That percentage could fluctuate with market conditions, the city's contribution rate and other factors. Proposition B last year provided more than $8.6 million that was paid into the fund, which exceeded the actuarial recommended contributions for the year by more than $5.5 million, according to the actuary report. LAGERS In order to provide better retirement benefits at a lower cost to police officers and firefighters in the future, part of the Proposition B plan was to transition those employees and retirees who wished to move their coverage to the Missouri LAGERS pension plan and get them out of the city plan. LAGERS is the largest pension plan in the state for government employees. The city's finance director, Leslie Haase, said the final members of the pension plan are finishing up transitioning to LAGERS unless they opt to stay in the local pension fund. She intends to have a report on that status in September, she said. Council members discussed the handling of past sales tax campaigns for police and fire expenses at a work session Monday. Council member Ryan Jackson said of a Proposition B renewal, 'I think it's a great idea to keep that funding mechanism in place,' though he expressed concerns about going too far with campaign statements, such as those who said of Prop B that 'This is what is going to take care of these departments forever.' But the campaign gave voters a clear, strong message, he added. 'What I think gave that the resounding success is that it wasn't the mayor and city staff handing the rest of us, 'Here is the plan.' They said, 'We're here to give you some information. You guys figure it out.'' 'It kind of came down to three options. We did some public information gathering, working with the unions and department heads, and that's how we ended up with the public safety sales tax proposition and the council got the Chamber of Commerce to back it. I think it really made a difference and I want to make sure when we do this that we do it right and do everything we can.' The measure was promoted by the chamber with the slogan that it was 'A Better Plan for Joplin.' Mayor Keenan Cortez talked about the successful passage of the first half-cent public safety sales tax in 2004. It has funded the construction of new fire stations, the Public Safety Training Center, and the addition of needed firefighters and police officers to the city departments. 'I will also add that during that time in 2004 when we were working on that ... the city had come up with what was a pretty good plan and it looked it was going to be a long-term plan or solution to a problem that the city had for a while. And then 20 years happened. And there was a global pandemic, a recession in 2008, and a lot of things took place. ... I remember what we were paying police officers then, and it's almost double now. The costs of goods and services has almost gone through the roof' since that tax was approved. The mayor said he agrees that residents need to be involved in the process, 'but I caution to call it the solution, or the fix-all, or greatest next thing, because who knows what we're going to have 20 years from now. So, we can make the best plans we can right now, and I think Prop B renewal is one of the best plans we can do going forward, but I just caution that it is going to be end-all, fix-all' for public safety pay. Councilman Josh Bard said he agreed with the idea of getting a group of people to represent the proposal. Details on what the city would use a renewed Proposition B tax to fund were not discussed. Air Canada Suspends ‘All Operations,' Impacting Over 130,000 Customers, amid Ongoing Flight Attendant Strike

The strike involves roughly 10,000 flight attendants NEED TO KNOW Air Canada has "suspended all operations" of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights as of Saturday, Aug. 16, due to roughly 10,000 flight attendants going on strike More than 130,000 customers may now be impacted, the airline said "We appreciate your patience while we work to get you on your way," Air Canada said in a statement Numerous Air Canada flights have been canceled after thousands of flight attendants went on strike. The airline said in a news release that it has 'suspended all operations' for Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights as of Saturday, Aug. 16, due to the strike. The release added, however, that Air Canada Express flights will not be affected, as they are 'operated by third-party airlines.' The strike involves roughly 10,000 flight attendants who are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Air Canada said the union served the company a 72-hour strike notice on Aug. 13. More than 130,000 customers may now be impacted, per the airline. In response to the strike, Air Canada said in its release that the airline has 'been gradually reducing' its normal schedule of 700 daily flights and is now working to negotiate new terms with CUPE to 'avoid further labor disruption.' In a post on X at around 8 p.m. on Aug. 15, Air Canada said it had cancelled 623 flights, affecting a little more than 100,000 passengers. During bargaining, the airline reportedly offered flight attendants a 38% increase in total compensation over four years, and a 25% raise in the first year, according to the BBC. However, CUPE said the offer was "below inflation, below market value [and] below minimum wage," per the outlet. CUPE later claimed in a statement shared on its website on Aug. 15 that Air Canada had withdrawn from the 'bargaining table' and had 'not returned." The union also alleged that the airline met with Canadian Labor Minister Patty Hajdu to "interfere with the bargaining process.' Hajdu said on Aug. 15, per Reuters, that she met with Air Canada and CUPE and urged both sides to continue negotiations in order to reach a deal and avert a then-potential strike. Now, because of the strike, Air Canada has told customers 'not to go to the airport unless they have a confirmed ticket on an airline other than Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge.' The airline added in a separate memo that travelers who are booked for Air Canada flights between Aug. 15 to Aug. 19 can change their flight for free, if they purchased a ticket or redeemed their points before Aug. 14. Air Canada added that those who booked a 'non-refundable' fare can cancel their itinerary and receive credit to use for future bookings. 'We appreciate your patience while we work to get you on your way,' the airline said in a statement. Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword
