Indian Express17 hours ago
Opposition candidate for the vice-presidential election Justice (Retd) B Sudershan Reddy said Thursday that contesting the polls 'is not merely about one individual' and is rather 'about reaffirming the idea of India as envisaged by our founders, where Parliament functions with integrity, where dissent is respected'.
Justice (Retd) Reddy made the remarks while filing his nomination papers as top leaders from INDIA bloc parties, including Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha LOP Rahul Gandhi, Rajya Sabha LOP Mallikarjun Kharge, MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, SP leader Ramgopal Yadav and Dharmednra Yadav, DMK's Tiruchi Siva, TMC's Satabdi Roy, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay Raut, CPI(M)'s John Brittas among others were present.
Sources said there were 20 proposers and 20 seconders in each set of forms filed by Justice (Retd) Reddy for his nomination. 'The V-P candidate has filed four sets, so 80 proposers and 80 seconders,' said the source.
In a statement after filing his nomination, Reddy promised that if elected as the vice-president, he would 'discharge that role with impartiality, dignity, and a steadfast commitment to dialogue and decorum'.
'This election is not merely about one individual. It is about reaffirming the idea of India as envisaged by our founders — an India where Parliament functions with integrity, where dissent is respected, and where institutions serve the people with independence and fairness,' said Reddy.
He said his life 'in public service as a judge of the Supreme Court of India, as a student of law, and as a citizen rooted in the democratic traditions of this Republic' has taught him that 'the true strength of India lies in the dignity of every individual, the protection of constitutional morality, and the unity in our diversity'.
'The Vice President, as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, carries the responsibility of safeguarding the highest traditions of parliamentary democracy,' Reddy said in the statement.
He expressed gratitude to the leaders of the Opposition parties for reposing their trust in him, and to the 'countless citizens' who continue to inspire this collective struggle for justice, equality, and harmony.
'With faith in our Constitution and hope in our people, I embark on this journey. May our democratic spirit continue to guide us all,' said Reddy.
Justice Reddy, who retired from the Supreme Court in 2011, most recently headed the independent expert working group set up by the Congress government in Telangana to analyse data of a caste survey conducted by it. As the head of the expert group, Justice Reddy had interactions with senior Congress leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, and reportedly left a good impression on them.
Justice Reddy is expected to be projected by the Opposition as a champion of social justice as opposed to CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran RSS leader.
The vice-presidential elections will be held on September 9.

Cong readying to ‘plunder' funds under guise of Musi rejuvenation, warns KTR

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Thursday alleged that the Congress government was preparing to 'plunder' public funds under the guise of the Musi River beautification project. The BRS leader stated that while the former BRS government, led by K Chandrashekar Rao, laid all the groundwork and prepared a master plan, the current Congress government has inflated the project's estimates to facilitate a massive scam. Addressing the media, KTR highlighted that it was the KCR government that brought Godavari river water to Kondapochamma Sagar, near Hyderabad, through the Kaleshwaram Project. He also reminded the people that in 2022, the KCR government approved a proposal with a budget of Rs 1,100 crore to bring Godavari water from Kondapochamma Sagar to Gandipet lake. KTR further explained that the BRS government undertook and completed the construction of 36 Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) to treat the 2,000 MLD (million litres per day) of sewage that flows into the Musi river. He said that the previous government also completed a 5-kilometer beautification stretch in the Nagole area and established a Shilparamam on the banks of the Musi River at Uppal Bhagayat. He said, while the KCR government prepared a master plan and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) with an estimated cost of Rs 16,000 crore, the Congress government has now inflated the estimates to an astounding Rs 1,50,000 crore, KTR alleged. He warned that the BRS would expose and prevent this 'plunder of public money'. He accused the Congress government of rushing the project to secure its position by sending 'money bags to Delhi', all under the 'beautiful cover' of urban development. KTR stated that the people of Telangana are watching all of this unfold.

MPs express alarm over surge in online betting addiction among youth

Hyderabad/New Delhi: The Indian Parliament witnessed a passionate appeal for urgent action against the growing menace of online gaming and betting apps targeting youth. Rajya Sabha MP Dr K. Laxman raised the issue, emphasizing that these platforms—often disguised as entertainment or skill-based games—are rapidly addicting young Indians and driving many into debt and despair. 'Tragic stories have become common across states. In Hyderabad alone, suicide helplines reported a 60% surge in distress calls from betting addicts. In one shocking case, a young girl fell into a Rs 9 lakh debt trap after initial winnings on a casino app,' Laxman told fellow members. He warned that the glamorization of such platforms by celebrities and influencers is misleading impressionable users, and lax regulation allows the problem to proliferate unchecked. Stressing the urgency, Laxman called for a nationwide digital de-addiction awareness campaign to educate youth and families about the psychological and financial harms of online betting. 'Further bans on all betting and gambling platforms that jeopardize social and financial stability must be considered,' Dr Laxman said, warning, 'Let us act before a generation is lost, chasing illusions behind screens.'
