Woman fatally mauled by dogs near Southern California park

A woman died after being attacked and mauled by a large pack of stray dogs near a San Bernardino park on Thursday, July 31, police said. The incident was first reported about 5 p.m. in a wash area adjacent to a homeless encampment near Perris Hill Park, in the 1100 block of East Highland Avenue, according to San Bernardino Police Department Sgt. Chris Gray. A 51-year-old woman was found to have been bitten multiple times by the dogs, he said. The pack was believed to have included 14 animals. She was taken to a hospital, where she soon died from her injuries. San Bernardino County coroner's officials identified the victim as Teodora Mendoza, 51, of San Bernardino. Responding officers shot at two dogs that charged at them while dealing with the chaotic scene, striking and killing one of them, Gray said. They were described as pit bull mixes. The remaining dogs were captured by animal control officials. Gray said a second person was also possibly injured by the dogs, however, further details were not available. Anyone with information can reach the San Bernardino Police Department at (909) 383-5311.
