First train fare surge coming in August
The fare adjustment, approved by the Department of Transport, will see single tickets rise by R2.50, with return fares increasing by between R5.50 and R6.00, depending on the travel distance.
This change affects thousands of daily passengers who rely on Metrorail services from stations such as Pretoria North, Wolmerton, Mabopane, Soshanguve, and Ga-Rankuwa.
PRASA has defended the increase, citing the need to meet growing operational costs, particularly those related to energy, infrastructure maintenance, and safety enhancements.
While some commuters acknowledge the need for improvements, others feel the increase is poorly timed, given the rising cost of living.
'We understand PRASA needs funds to improve, but salaries are not going up at the same speed.
'Even a few rands extra every day makes a difference when you are already stretching your budget,' said John Molefe, a daily commuter from Pretoria North who uses the train to get to work in the Pretoria CBD.
To soften the blow, PRASA has announced the return of weekly and monthly ticket options at discounted rates, an effort aimed at encouraging regular commuters to continue using rail services.
According to PRASA spokesperson Andiswa Makanda, off-peak discounts of up to 50% will also remain in place for those travelling between 09:00 and 14:00, offering some relief to pensioners, military veterans, and scholars.
PRASA rail CEO Nwabisa Gqamane-Ntiyane maintains that train travel remains the most affordable public transport option available in the country.
'Even with this fare adjustment, PRASA Rail fares remain the most affordable across all modes of transport. We are committed to providing affordable, safe and efficient commuter services,' she said.
However, concerns remain about service quality, punctuality, and station conditions.
'If I'm paying more, I expect cleaner trains, safer stations, and reliable schedules,' said Thato Makhura, a student from Mabopane.
Makanda said commuters can find detailed information about the new fares, seasonal tickets, and station-specific details by visiting their nearest Metrorail station.

Sports fans assured of safety and traffic measures for big-match weekend
Johannesburg will see major security and traffic management operations on Saturday as two major sporting events take place on the same day, the MTN8 semifinal between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns in Soweto and the rugby clash between the Springboks and Australia in New Doornfontein. The Johannesburg metropolitan police department (JMPD) said a substantial number of officers will be deployed around Orlando Stadium and the Ellis Park precinct. Soweto operations In Orlando, road closures around the stadium will start at 11am. Affected routes include the N17, Soweto highway, Klipspruit Valley Road, Martha Louw Street and Mooki Street. Officers will manage traffic flow and guide motorists to designed parking areas at nearby schools, sports fields and open spaces. VIPs, media and VOC members will park inside the stadium precinct. Spectators are urged to arrive early, with gates opening at 12pm ahead of the 3pm kick-off. JMPD has appealed to residents and motorists to be patient as heavy traffic is expected before and after the match. Ellis Park operations In New Doornfontein, an extensive plan will be in place, with road closures around Ellis Park beginning at 10pm on Friday and lasting until 10pm on Saturday. Affected streets include Joe Slovo Drive, Sivewright Avenue, Bertrams Road, Albertina Sisulu Road and Saratoga Avenue. Several key intersections will also be closed. Motorists are advised to use the M1 and M2 highways as alternatives and avoid the stadium precinct unless attending the match. The JMPD will be supported by points people at key intersections. With parking at Ellis Park limited, the metro police is urging spectators to use park-and-ride bus services from 13 shopping centres and entertainment hubs, taxi shuttles from Eastgate Mall and St John's College in Houghton Estate or e-hailing services to designed drop-off zones in Braamfontein. Gautrain management agency has partnered with Prasa to run an integrated match day train service. Fans can take the pay-to-ride Gautrain to Park Station and from there hop on a free Prasa train directly to the stadium. Prasa services will run between 11am and 4.30pm, with the last return train leaving at 8.45pm. Tshepo Kgobe, CEO of the Gautrain management agency, said Gautrain's R1 a day parking promotion remains in place until October 31. The final Gautrain from Park Station will depart at 9.15pm. 'We urge all rugby fans to take advantage of the safe, convenient, and seamless service and help ease the pressure on roads', said Kgobe. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla urged all road users to co-operate with traffic authorities, adhere to traffic rules and exercise patience.

Centre one step closer to launching ICT hub and shelter
Thandanani Drop Inn Centre's dream of having its own information and communication technology (ICT) Centre is about to come true. This follows after the Super Sun brand launched its new flagship Super Sun Super Together purpose-led initiative together with retailer Big Save on Thursday. The initiative involves gathering donations that will be shared with Thandanani to support the development of its ICT Centre. Thabo Kgotsi from Thandanani said the ICT centre will benefit children, volunteers, and recovering addicts in the community by giving them access to advanced technology. Kgotsi confirmed this has long been one of the goals of the centre, saying, 'It will be a learning space. Since the world is going digital, it will seek to equip and develop stability when it comes to technology. 'It will serve as a work readiness programme, and a space where the community can do copies and CVs and also apply for job opportunities. 'It's a powerful validation of the work we do. More than that, it's a commitment to the lives and futures of the people we serve, particularly our women and youth. 'Through this support, we will be able to invest further in our centre and support our community.' Thandanani is currently building a homeless shelter that still needs to be furnished, and with the help of the Super Sun Super Together initiative, the shelter will also be launched. The collected donations will then be shared between the two projects, going first to the shelter, and then later supporting the ICT centre. 'It's a powerful validation of the work we do. PRASA promises to get Springbok fans to Ellis Park ahead of kick-off

Image: X The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has announced that it will offer a train shuttle service for spectators to use when attending Rugby Championship matches over the next two weekends. ADVERTISEMENT The Springboks will take on Australia at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on 16 August and at the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town on 23 August. To ease traffic congestion and ensure an enjoyable experience for all fans, PRASA will operate a dedicated train shuttle service connecting spectators from the Gautrain and other transport modes between Johannesburg Park Station and Ellis Park Station on Saturday starting at 11:00 to 16:30. This service will run at 15 minute intervals. The train service will resume again at 19:00, with the last train departing Ellis Park Station at 20:45 in order for commuters to catch the last Gautrain at 21:15. ADVERTISEMENT Additional trains In the Cape Town, PRASA will run additional trains on the Southern, Northern and Cape Flats Lines to Cape Town Station on Saturday, 23 August. The train will operate at 30 to 40 minute intervals between 11:00 to 16:00. Commuters will then make their way to Cape Town Civic Centre, where MyCiTi buses will be operating to assist spectators make their way to the Cape Town Stadium. The train service will resume at 20:00 to 22:00, to ensure that all commuters make their way home safely.
