Indian MPs' World tour builds narrative on Pak-based terror
Indian MPs cutting across party lines have been able to create a strong narrative against Pakistan-based terror infrastructure around the world, from Japan to Colombia and the US to Africa, Russia, Southeast Asia and West Asia over the last two weeks.
While most delegations are back in India after their multi-nation tours, the delegation from the US is expected to return on Friday. Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington DC on Wednesday, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading an all-party delegation to the US to brief key stakeholders on Operation Sindoor, dismissed the Trump administration's claim that its trade diplomacy played a major role in averting a full-fledged military conflict between India and Pakistan.
During the visits, key stakeholders and ministers from across countries extended strong support to India's fight against cross-border terror as each delegation made presentations on the Pahalgam terror attack, Pak-based terror infrastructure and Operation Sindoor.While the delegation led by Tharoor convinced the Colombian government to withdraw a statement criticising India, another delegation led by JDU MP Sanjay Jha was successful in sensitising Japan on the menace of cross-border terror. Immune from any cross-border illegal migration and extremism, the Japanese society remains passive to the threat of cross-border terror, experts on Japanese affairs pointed out.In Brazil, the Tharoor-led delegation delivered a message on cross-border terror infrastructure which could assist in shaping the BRICS bloc's position on terrorism at the upcoming summit in Rio De Janeiro on July 6-7.
The visits to Egypt and Indonesia were significant as both are attempting to blunt the Pakistani narrative in the Organisation of Islamic Conference meetings. While Indonesia (having the world's biggest Muslim population) has a principled position against any secessionism and terrorism, Egypt has a strong stance against terrorism and extremism. Similarly, visits by MPs to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE were critical to reaffirm India's security partnerships. In Algeria, the Jay Panda-led delegation was successful in driving home the point of common threat from Pakistan-based Salafists.Congo, Sierra Leone and Liberia often do not receive senior-level political figures from India and therefore the trips by MPs to these countries, which are getting into the UN Security Council as non-permanent members, were important. Both Liberia and Sierra Leone extended special gestures to back India's approach on cross-border terror.While the visits to Russia and France by MPs reaffirmed India's strong security and defence partnerships with the old strategic partners, the trips to Italy, Slovenia, Latvia, Spain and the UK were significant to drive home the point how India has been a victim of relentless state-sponsored cross-border terror.
MEETING IN THE US
In the US, the Tharoor-led delegation met the leadership of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans in the 119th Congress, co-chairs Rep Ro Khanna and Rep Rich McCormick and vice co-chairs Rep Andy Barr and Rep Marc Veasey. The parliamentary delegation briefed the caucus members on the cross-border terrorism faced by India. The Congressmen expressed unequivocal and bipartisan condemnation for the terror attack in Pahalgam.

NEW DELHI: The 4th India-Central Asia Dialogue saw the two sides stressing that perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terrorist acts must be held accountable and brought to justice, while also unequivocally condemning the Pahalgam attack. A joint statement said that the ministers unequivocally condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

US Supreme Court allows DOGE access to Social Security data
The US Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Department of Government Efficiency, billionaire Elon Musk's former department, broad access to the Social Security Administration's data systems. This will allow the DOGE to access personal information of millions of Americans logged under the SSA, news agency Reuters reported. Justices put on hold the order of Maryland-based US District Judge Ellen Hollander, who had largely blocked DOGE's access to "personally identifiable information" in data such as medical and financial records while litigation proceeded in a lower court. This move came at the Justice Department's request. The court, which had a 6-3 conservative majority, did not provide a rationale for siding with the DOGE. Two labor unions and an advocacy group sued to stop DOGE from accessing sensitive data at the SSA. The plaintiffs of the lawsuit argued that SSA had been "ransacked" and that DOGE members had been installed at the agency without proper vetting or training and demanded access to some of its sensitive data systems. Earlier in February, DOGE's move to seek access to SSA data prompted the acting commissioner, Michelle King, to step down against the backdrop of the Musk-security system issues. King chose to resign after over 30 years of service as she refused to provide the requested information to the DOGE staffers at the SSA. A day later, the White House had said that the Trump administration put an "anti-fraud expert" temporarily in charge at the SSA. At the time, Trump also directed Musk and DOGE to identify fraud at the agency, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying that several dead people have been receiving fraudulent Social Security payments. "They haven't dug into the books yet, but they suspect that there are tens of millions of deceased people who are receiving fraudulent Social Security payments and so their goal in going into the Social Security Administration is to identify three things: Number one, to identify duplicate payments and to end them, Number two, to identify payments that are going to deceased people who are no longer living and should no longer be receiving that money and number three, to protect the integrity of the system for hardworking Americans who have been paying into it their entire lives,' Leavitt had told Fox News. Nancy Altman, president of the Social Security Works, an advocacy group for the preservation of Social Security benefits, said that there is no way to overstate "how serious a breach this (DOGE seeks SSA data) is". "And my understanding is that it has already occurred. The information collected and held securely by the Social Security Administration is highly sensitive," she had added. SSA has the data of everyone with a Social Security number, Medicare, and every low-income American who has applied for Social Security's means-tested companion program, Supplemental Security Income. In addition, Social Security payments account for around $1.5 trillion, or a fifth, of the annual federal spending in the US. An audit from last year, a NYT report cited. The agency is a major provider of government benefits, sending checks each month to more than 70 million recipients including retirees and disabled Americans.

'Good Start': National Conference On Kashmir Rail Link Inaugurated By PM Modi
Srinagar: Political parties, cutting across affiliations and ideologies, welcomed the Kashmir rail link on Friday, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hoping for a boost in trade and tourism in the valley. The ruling National Conference (NC) termed the rail link a good start. "It is a good start for us. It will help ease the difficulties we have faced in transportation, and tourism and other sectors," NC leader and MLA Pampore, Justice Hasnain Masoodi (retd), told reporters here. He also at the same time said the rights and constitutional guarantees of the people of J-K must also be honoured. "The train has chugged, but the promises also need to be kept. The old promises, made when we joined hands with them, should be honoured," the former Lok Sabha MP said, referring to the promises made with the people of J-K at the time of accession. "This vehicle can only move forward well when both of its tyres -- development and political aspirations -- run well. Then only can the whole nation benefit," he added. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the train to Kashmir, terming the project a culmination of what so many governments worked on and capped by the Modi government. "We welcome the train. The work had been on for the past 40 years, ever since Indira Gandhi started the Jammu-Udhampur railway link in 1983. All governments have worked on this project, and Modi has completed it. It was very difficult, but he has done it, and people are happy with it," Mufti said. Reacting to the prime minister's address in Katra, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said she was happy that Modi acknowledged the people's categorical denunciation of terrorism in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. "I am also happy that Modi has acknowledged the stand taken by the people of Kashmir against terrorism after the Pahalgam attack. He appreciated Adil Shah, who laid down his life while saving a tourist. This is who Kashmiris are," she said. Another PDP leader and Pulwama MLA, Waheed Para, said the train straddled centuries of separation. "As train now reaches the soul of Kashmir crossing not just mountains, but centuries of silence and separation. The Chenab Bridge is more than steel; it is healing in motion, and a long-awaited vision made real," Para said on X. He said Kashmir's future lies not in "isolation", but "in becoming a gateway as (Sufi saint) Shah-e-Hamdan (Mir Syed Ali Hamdani) once walked paths that linked this land to Central Asia. "Let all roads converge here. Through Kashmir, India opens its gates to the region, and to the world. No longer be the edge, Kashmir is the bridge to South and Central Asia," he said. The J-K unit of BJP described the completion of the Udhampur-Baramulla rail link as a "historic moment", and called the project a "precious Eid gift" for the people of the Union Territory. "The Udhampur-Baramulla railway connectivity is not just a feat of engineering, but a symbol of hope, development, and national integration. This is truly a historic moment for Jammu and Kashmir," BJP's J-K spokesperson Altaf Thakur said. He said, "This is yet another testament to PM Modi's unwavering commitment to the development and progress of J-K." Thakur hailed the project as one of the most significant infrastructure achievements in recent times and said it will benefit everyone, especially those from the far-flung and economically weaker regions. Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also welcomed the railway link. He, however, also asked the prime minister to release political prisoners from J-K if he sincerely sought to reduce the mistrust. Addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid here, the Mirwaiz said all prisoners, including political leadership, remain in the prayers and thoughts of the people. The government of India should, as a goodwill gesture, release these prisoners on the occasion of Eid, he said. "If the prime minister truly seeks to reduce the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) which he often mentions in his speeches, then such humanitarian steps are the real way forward. Train links are welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure," the Mirwaiz said.
