Boat carrying migrants capsizes off the coast of the Dominican Republic killing at least 4 people
Seventeen people who were rescued, including a girl, received medical attention and were in good health, Juan Salas, director of the country's Civil Defense, said. A survivor reported that about 40 people were on the boat before it capsized.
'That happened close to the coast; it's possible some people swam out,' said Salas, who estimated the boat sank at a depth of 500 meters (1,640 feet) to 600 meters (1,970 feet). He added that the search was being hampered by strong waves and seabed conditions.
The boat included migrants from Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
The number of illegal journeys to Puerto Rico by sea in Dominican Republic waters has increased significantly in the last few years. The International Organization for Migration documented at least 321 deaths and disappearances of migrants in the Caribbean in 2022, the highest number since 2014.

Monterey County plane crash victims recovered; 3 found dead
The United States Coast Guard said three people were recovered and found unresponsive after a plane crash in Monterey County on Saturday. Search and rescue crews recovered the three unresponsive passengers on Sunday, the Coast Guard said. Just before 11 p.m., the Coast Guard Station in Monterey was alerted to a twin-engine Beechcraft that had crashed between 200-300 yards off Point Pinos. The Coast Guard said three people were on board. A boat and helicopter crew responded to the scene and located the Beechcraft. One person was found unresponsive around 3 a.m., the Coast Guard said. The other two were found unresponsive inside the aircraft later Sunday morning, officials said. According to the Coast Guard, the plane took off from the San Carlos airport. Pacific Grove Police said they received calls about the plane crash after 10 p.m. and were told it crashed near the coastline of Asilomar State Beach. One Pacific Grove resident said he heard a plane circling his neighborhood and then a loud thump about 30 seconds later. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office identified the three victims as 60-year-old Steve Eugene Clatterbuck of Salinas, 36-year-old James Vincent of Monterey and 44-year-old Jamie Lee Tabscott of Monterey. The office said in a statement that, "The family and friends of the deceased have expressed that they wish to extend their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. They ask for privacy during this difficult time." Pacific Grove Police, the Monterey Fire Department, Monterey County Sheriff's Office and San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, Cal Fire and the Coast Guard were all at the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

Fire and rescue service and coastguard launch new lifesaving partnership
A new partnership has been launched between the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and HM Coastguard. The collaboration aims to improve operational efficiency at the Selsey base. As part of the agreement, the fire service will provide compressed air cylinders from Selsey Fire Station for the coastguard to use when responding to emergency incidents. This initiative is expected to "offer a significant time saving for HM Coastguard in the event of an emergency incident, while providing operational resilience." The coastguard will reciprocate by supplying the fire service with specialist water rescue personal protective equipment during joint incidents, enhancing the fire service's operational capacity. Station manager Mick Dunham, who led the project, said: "We work very closely with all of our emergency service partners, but following an emergency incident where we worked closely with HM Coastguard we identified areas where we could improve and support our colleagues at HM Coastguard through our Operational Assurance debrief process. "This could benefit anyone who gets into difficulty by the shore. If you see an emergency by the coast, call 999 and ask for Coastguard."

Plane with three aboard crashes offshore near Monterey County lighthouse
Two people were found unresponsive and rescue crews were looking for a third person after a small plane crashed off the coast of Monterey County on Saturday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Monterey County officials alerted the Coast Guard's Monterey station at 10:55 p.m. Saturday that a twin-engine Beechcraft with three people aboard had crashed about 200 to 300 yards offshore, near the historic Point Pinos Lighthouse in Pacific Grove, the Coast Guard said in a news release Sunday. The plane took off from the San Carlos airport at 10:11 p.m. and was last seen at 10:37 p.m. near Monterey, according to flight tracking data from Flight Aware. The Coast Guard launched a 29-foot response boat that arrived on the scene shortly after 11 p.m. A Coast Guard helicopter and three California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection boat crews also assisted in the search, along with two Cal Fire drones. Multiple local law enforcement agencies also assisted in the response. The Beechcraft was located, according to the Coast Guard. The plane had been scheduled to leave for Gooding Municipal Airport in Idaho on Sunday morning — a two-hour, 48-minute flight — and to fly back to Monterey later in the day. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash. ABC7 News in San Francisco reported that airplane parts, including at least one wheel, had washed up on nearby Asilomar State Beach by Sunday morning.
