Vietnam ramps up expansion of South China Sea outposts: think tank

Vietnam has continued to expand land reclamation on its occupied features in the South China Sea, with military-related construction of new ports and airstrips, according to a Chinese think tank.
Citing satellite images, the Beijing-based South China Sea Probing Initiative (SCSPI) said on Friday that the Southeast Asian nation had reclaimed nearly 0.78 sq km (0.3 square miles) of land on 11 features in the contested Spratly Islands, known as the Nansha Islands in China, over the past six months.
China and Vietnam have rival territorial claims in the South China Sea.
In total, Vietnam has reclaimed over 8.5 sq km of new land on these features since October 2021, according to a social media post by the think tank.
Vietnam has also stepped up construction of military-related facilities, such as harbour basins, wharves and
runways , the think tank said in a separate post on Chinese social media.
It said Vietnam was building an airstrip on
Barque Canada Reef that is expected to be about 3,000 metres (9,843 feet) long when completed. It added that sandbars that could accommodate runways had also been built on four features, including Pearson Reef, Tennent Reef, Ladd Reef and South Reef.

All about turmeric, how cooks use it and a recipe that makes the most of the spice

Turmeric is, to my palate, indelibly associated with Indian cuisine, which is why, when I taste it in non-Indian dishes, it comes as a bit of a surprise. I remember tasting it once at a cheap Spanish restaurant in Hong Kong, where the cooks substituted it for the much more expensive saffron – only the colours are similar; the flavours are a world apart. I also tasted it at Cha Ca La Vong, in Hanoi, Vietnam, where the spice was a key part of the restaurant's signature dish of fish with rice noodles, vegetables, peanuts, fish sauce , chillies and lots of fresh herbs, including dill. Turmeric is mostly sold as a dried, ground spice, but it starts off as a rhizome that you can buy fresh at shops specialising in Indian and Southeast Asian ingredients. Turmeric looks like ginger on the outside, but inside the flesh is vivid yellow-orange. Photo: Shutterstock The fresh rhizome looks rather like ginger root, but when you slice through the papery skin, you will see the flesh is a vivid yellow-orange, instead of ginger's pale tan. After being dried and ground, the bright colour is usually an indication of its freshness, because it fades with age. Dried turmeric often makes up a large portion of Indian spice mixtures, where it contributes not just colour but also a distinctive, slightly bitter flavour.

Malaysia's Anwar faces more woes as sexual harassment case against him proceeds

A crisis of credibility hangs over Malaysia 's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as he prepares to face a sexual harassment suit later this month, the latest in a series of controversies that has rocked his administration and cast doubts over his reformist agenda. Advertisement Anwar faces allegations that he has sexually assaulted a former aide, as the case threatens to dredge up past sex scandals that hounded him for years while he was in opposition. A high court in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday threw out Anwar's attempt to invoke legal immunity as prime minister against the suit filed by Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, ruling there were no constitutional provisions for such privileges. The trial for the case is scheduled to begin on June 16. In accepting the ruling, Anwar said on Wednesday his application was 'never about seeking personal immunity or escaping legal scrutiny'. 'It concerns the integrity of our constitutional system and the need to ensure that high public office is protected from litigation that may be strategically timed, politically motivated or institutionally disruptive,' he said in a statement. Advertisement Anwar's reputation has taken a beating in recent weeks.
