Bridge and two Adams Co. roads scheduled for work in 2025
Feb. 26—RITZVILLE — Sections of two Adams County roads were closed on an emergency basis following wet and windy weather. Others are subject to closure as spring approaches.
The section of Longmeier Road between Franz and Lee roads was closed, along with Lauer Road from Franz to Harder roads. Public Works Director Todd O'Brien told Adams County Commissioners Tuesday that some roads will not be passable while the ground is thawing but not dry. A map of road closures is available on the public works website.
Bigger projects are planned once the weather warms up enough for construction. Adams County Engineer Scott Yaeger said one project started last fall and is still ongoing.
Construction — or in this case, reconstruction — began in October 2024 on a section of Lind-Hatton Road. Yaeger said in an earlier interview that the section under construction is about five miles north of State Route 26 between South Damon Road and Phillips Road to the BNSF railroad crossing.
The section of road under construction was closed over the winter. The work did stop over the winter; it's scheduled to start in March 2025, with the entire project taking through June 2026, Yaeger wrote in response to an email from the Columbia Basin Herald.
The cost for that section of the rebuild is about $3.12 million.
Major work is planned on Schoonover Road about eight miles west of Ritzville. Among other places, it links Ritzville and Odessa. The first phase is scheduled to start in late June and be completed by October.
"This is a reconstruction that is widening (the road), with a new subbase and surfacing with asphalt, drainage facilities and safety rail where needed," Yaeger said.
The project cost is about $3.13 million.
Adams County officials will start work in late October on the bridge at Sackman Road near Othello. It's part of a much larger project to rebuild bridges in Adams County to allow widening of the East Low Canal.
Yaeger said the work will start once the canal is drained for the winter and should be completed by spring 2026. Cost is about $4.8 million.
The new bridge will span the canal without piers in the water, instead being supported by abutments, called girders, anchored to the shore. The abutment and the bridge deck will be precast and assembled onsite. The bridge deck is made of precast panels which will be installed separately and then joined with concrete and a tie system.
Rebuilding bridges along the canal is part of the Odessa Groundwater Replacement Project, which involves Adams and Grant counties, the Columbia Basin Development League, other organizations and federal and state agencies. Sara Higgins, CBDL president, said in an earlier interview that the goal is to end the reliance on groundwater wells for irrigation in the Odessa region of the Columbia Basin Project. Irrigators in that section have been using groundwater wells since the 1960s when the development of the overall project stopped, which has put pressure on the underlying aquifer.
The project involves widening two bridges in Grant County and six in Adams County. The remaining five bridges in Adams County are along the canal northwest of Othello on Providence Road, Booker Road, Herman Road, Foley Road and Cunningham Road.

Ahmedabad plane crash: Promised call from crew member to her father that never came
Mumbai, Before her flight to London, Air India crew member Maithili Patil had made a final, comforting promise to her father, Moreshwar Patil, that she would call him once she reached the city. But the call did not come. Patil, 23, is among 12 crew members of ill-fated Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft that crashed immediately after taking off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. A resident of Nhava village, Patil joined Air India two years ago and is the daughter of an ONGC labour contractor, former sarpanch of Nhava Jitendra Mhatre told PTI. Mhatre, who is also Patil's relative, recalled that she had called her father minutes before the tragedy, assuring him that she would call once she reached London. It is estimated that nine crew members, including the two pilots, were from Maharashtra. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft with 230 passengers and 12 crew members crashed into the complex of a medical college moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon. One person survived the crash, while 241 on board were killed, of whom 12 were from Maharashtra, an official said. He said the aircraft's pilot, Captain Sumeet Pushkaraj Sabharwal , was a resident of Jal Vayu Vihar in the Powai area of Mumbai and lived with his elderly parents. The co-pilot of the flight, Clive Kunder, was a resident of the western suburbs of Mumbai, as per his social media account. Cabin crew member Deepak Pathak lived in Badlapur in neighbouring Thane district. Pathak's sister had earlier said he spoke to his mother before leaving for London. He had been working with Air India for 11 years, she said. Aparna Mahadik , another crew member, was a resident of Goregaon in the western suburbs, and her husband also works with Air India as a crew member. She was a relative of NCP leader Sunil Tatkare. Roshni Rajendra Songhare and Saineeta Chakravarti, both crew members, hailed from Dombivli and Juhu Koliwada, respectively. Songhare was also a travel influencer with more than 54,000 followers on Instagram. The victims also included Mahadev Pawar and his wife Asha , who hailed from Hatid village in Sangola of Solapur district. The Pawars had left Sangola and settled in Gujarat 15 years ago, and they were heading to London to visit their son. One of the passengers, Yasha Kamdar Modha , was the daughter of Nagpur businessman Manish Kamdar. She was travelling to London with her son Rudra and mother-in-law Rakshaben, and all three perished in the crash.

How did British passenger survive Air India plane crash?
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is believed to be the only survivor onboard the plane involved in Thursday's disaster in Ahmedabad. The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner was carrying 242 people when it crashed into a medical college shortly after take-off. Mr Ramesh was in seat 11A, next to one of the aircraft's emergency exits. Footage posted on social media shows him being interviewed by Indian television news channel DD News while lying in a hospital bed. Another news channel, India TV, reported that he said: 'The aircraft wasn't gaining altitude and was just gliding before it suddenly slammed into a building and exploded. 'Everything happened in seconds. I realised we were going down.' He went on: 'At first, I thought I was dead. 'Later, I realised I was still alive and saw an opening in the fuselage. 'I managed to unbuckle myself, used my leg to push through that opening, and crawled out. 'Everyone around me was either dead or dying. I still don't understand how I escaped.' Indian newspaper the Hindustan Times report that he said: 'I saw people dying in front of my eyes – the air hostesses, and two people I saw near me.' He also described how it felt like the plane was 'stuck in the air' within five to 10 seconds of taking off, and 'suddenly the lights started flickering green and white'. Professor Graham Braithwaite, director of aerospace and aviation at Cranfield University, Bedfordshire, said Mr Ramesh's survival was 'a lovely surprise in a really, really tragic event'. 'I can only imagine that he was thrown from the wreckage, and that somehow as it crashed, what it hit managed to absorb some of the impact'. He went on: 'Looking at the scene, I would imagine that the disruption to the aircraft would have been huge. 'If anybody could have got out, then they probably could have just gone out in a gap in the fuselage. 'You'd struggle to infer from this, therefore, that is the seat you must always sit in. 'At the point that an aircraft like that hits a building and catches fire, there's probably not too much you can do in that situation beyond being lucky about where you're sat.'

The pre-draft process has inevitably been busy for Auburn basketball's Johni Broome, who's in the thick of 10 visits with different NBA franchises before the draft's start on June 25. Following a workout with the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, Broome said he has completed visits with the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Clippers, as well as Golden State.
