Global Cyberattack Targets Microsoft SharePoint Zero-Day Flaw, Hits Government and Enterprise Servers

Hans India21-07-2025
A major global cyberattack is unfolding as a newly discovered vulnerability in Microsoft SharePoint exposes tens of thousands of on-premise servers to active exploitation. This zero-day flaw, still unpatched in some versions, has impacted networks across government agencies, businesses, and universities around the world.
The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2025-53770, has already led to unauthorized intrusions in the past few days, prompting urgent action from security teams and global cyber watchdogs. Microsoft confirmed the issue in a security advisory released Saturday, stating the exploit is currently being used in live attacks and urging immediate protective action.
'This is a significant vulnerability,' said Adam Meyers, senior vice president at cybersecurity firm Crowd Strike. 'Anybody who's got a hosted SharePoint server has got a problem.'
Patches have been rolled out for SharePoint Subscription Edition and SharePoint 2019, but SharePoint 2016 remains unpatched as Microsoft continues working on a fix. The company clarified that the cloud-based SharePoint Online within Microsoft 365 is not affected.
Despite the patch rollout for some versions, experts warn that attackers may have already compromised critical systems. According to a report by The Washington Post, access was gained to systems belonging to US federal and state agencies, European governments, energy companies, a Brazilian university, and an Asian telecom firm. In some incidents, hackers locked officials out of public document repositories by hijacking them.
The nature of the exploit enables spoofing attacks, where intruders can pose as trusted sources to infiltrate systems. With SharePoint often linked to services like Outlook and Teams, the attackers could potentially access sensitive communications, steal credentials, and establish persistent access using cryptographic keys.
What's more alarming is that even applying the available patch might not eliminate the threat for already breached systems.
'So pushing out a patch on Monday or Tuesday doesn't help anybody who's been compromised in the past 72 hours,' a security researcher told The Washington Post.
Microsoft has issued detection guidance and mitigation steps on its official blog to help system administrators assess their exposure and take protective measures. Organizations using on-premises SharePoint are being advised to monitor for suspicious activity and apply available fixes without delay.
As the situation evolves, Microsoft is expected to release patches for SharePoint 2016 shortly. Until then, vigilance remains the best defense.

Apple overcomes Trump's trade war, slow start in AI to deliver surprisingly strong quarter

Apple shook off a thicket of tariffs and a botched entry into artificial intelligence to accelerate its revenue growth during its springtime quarter, but the trendsetting tech company still faces a bumpy road ahead that could lead to higher iPhone prices. The April-June results released on Thursday (July 31, 2025) came against a backdrop of adversity that has been raising worries about the trajectory of a longtime tech kingpin that expects to absorb a setback of nearly $2 billion from the tariffs that President Donald Trump has already imposed and others in the pipeline. Despite the doubts, Apple remains a moneymaking machine. The Cupertino, California, company earned $23.4 billion, or $1.57 per share, during its fiscal third quarter, a 9 per cent increase from the same time last year. Revenue climbed 10% from a year ago to $94 billion. The company's iPhone sales surged 13 per cent from a year ago to $44.6 billion. In another positive development, Apple's business in China showed signs of snapping out of a prolonged malaise with a 4% bump in revenue from the same time last year. All those numbers were well above the analyst projections that steer investors, helping to boost Apple's recently slumping stock price by about 3 per cent in extended trading. But the unexpectedly solid performance doesn't necessarily mean it's smooth sailing ahead for Apple. Mr. Trump's trade war targeting foreign-made products such as the iPhone and Apple's stumbling start in the pivotal transition to AI is causing investors to question if the company will remain at the tech forefront as the industry moves into a new era. Before Thursday's report came out, Apple's stock price had plunged by 17% so far this year to wipe out more than $600 billion in shareholder wealth and knock the company off its perch as the world's most valuable company. Meanwhile, the shares of AI chipmaker Nvidia have surged 32% this year, and the shares of AI pacesetter Microsoft have gained 27%, propelling the market value to $4 trillion. Even though Apple remains highly profitable, the tariffs that Mr. Trump has already imposed on China and other countries cost the company $800 million during the past quarter, and CEO Tim Cook told analysts during a conference call that the fees would exact an additional toll of $1.1 billion during the July-September period. The company also predicted its revenue for the July-September period would increase at a slightly slower pace than the past quarter. Apple softened the blow of Mr. Trump's tariffs on products made outside the U.S. during the past quarter by shifting its production of iPhones from China to India. But the administration intends to impose a 25% tariff on goods from India, a move that could intensify the pressure on Apple to raise the prices on the next generation of iPhones expected to be released in September. Cook didn't address the possibility of an iPhone increase during his Thursday remarks to analysts. Meanwhile, Apple is still trying to fulfil the AI promises it made last year when it unveiled an array of new iPhone features built on the revolutionary technology, raising expectations that the shift would spur millions of people to upgrade their old devices. But Apple still hasn't delivered on an AI upgrade that was supposed to smarten up its often-bumbling virtual assistant Siri, one of the main reasons underlying the lackluster growth of iPhone sales. 'There are two big questions looming over Apple: How are you going to rejigger your business model to deal with the new tariff backdrop and then what is the company going to do to drive an upgrade cycle for the iPhone?' said Melissa Otto, a stock market analyst for S&P's Visible Alpha. But Cook spent much of the conference call celebrating the ongoing popularity of the iPhone, noting that Apple has now sold more than 3 billion of them since the device's debut in 2007. He also credited the AI features that Apple has been able to introduce for spurring a flurry of customers upgrading to the iPhone 16 models that came out last year. 'We see AI as one of the most profound technologies of our lifetime,' Cook said. 'We are embedding it across our devices and platforms and across the company.' Through Apple's recent ups and downs, the company has been able to rely on one consistent stronghold: the services division, which includes the iPhone app store, streaming subscriptions, product repair plans and other operations that generate recurring revenue. That was the case again in the past quarter, with services revenue rising 13% from last year to $27.2 billion. But a significant portion of Apple's services revenue could evaporate, depending on how a federal judge decides to curb the abuses of Google's illegal monopoly in search. A ban on Google paying Apple more than $20 billion annually to lock in its search engine as the default on the iPhone, iPad and Mac computers is among the measures that U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta is considering as part of a decision expected before Labor Day.

Big Tech may be breaking the bank for AI, but investors love it

Big Tech is spending more than ever on artificial intelligence - but the returns are rising too, and investors are buying played a bigger role in driving demand across internet search, digital advertising and cloud computing in the April-June quarter, powering revenue growth at technology giants Microsoft, Meta, and that momentum will sustain, Microsoft and Alphabet decided to ramp up spending to ease capacity shortages that have limited their ability to meet soaring AI services demand, even after several quarters of multi-billion-dollar results offer the clearest sign yet that AI is emerging as a primary growth engine, although the monetization journey is still in its early days, investors and analysts said. The upbeat commentary also bodes well for , the largest US cloud provider, which will report earnings on Thursday after markets close, and underscores how surging demand for the new technology is shielding the tech giants from tariff-driven economic uncertainty hobbling other sectors. "As companies like Alphabet and Meta race to deliver on the promise of AI, capital expenditures are shockingly high and will remain elevated for the foreseeable future," said Debra Aho Williamson, founder and chief analyst at Sonata Insights. But if their core businesses remain strong, "it will buy them more time with investors and provide confidence that the billions being spent on infrastructure, talent and other tech-related expenses will be worthwhile," she added. Microsoft shares rose about 9% in premarket trading on Thursday, putting the Windows maker on track to cross $4 trillion in market value - a milestone only chip giant Nvidia has reached so far. Meta was up even more, rising 11.5% and on course to add nearly $200 billion to its market value of $1.75 trillion. Amazon gained over 3%. All the companies have faced intense scrutiny from investors over their ballooning capital expenditures, which were expected to total $330 billion this year before the latest earnings. And until a few days ago, the Magnificent Seven stocks were also trailing the S&P 500 in year-to-date performance. Silencing doubts Microsoft said on Wednesday it would spend a record $30 billion in the current quarter, after better-than-expected sales and an above-estimate forecast for its Azure cloud computing business showcased the growing returns on its massive AI bets. The prediction puts Microsoft on track to potentially outspend its rivals over the next year. It came after Google-parent Alphabet beat revenue expectations and raised its spending forecast by $10 billion to $85 billion for the year. Microsoft also disclosed for the first time the dollar figure for Azure sales and the number of users for its Copilot AI tools, whose adoption has long been a concern for investors. It said Azure generated more than $75 billion in sales in its last fiscal year, while Copilot tools had over 100 million users. Overall, around 800 million customers use AI tools peppered across Microsoft's sprawling software empire. "It's the kind of result that quickly silences any doubts about cloud or AI demand," said Josh Gilbert, market analyst at eToro. "Microsoft is more than justifying its spending." Other AI companies have also attracted a clutch of users. Alphabet said last week its Gemini AI assistant app has more than 450 million monthly active users. OpenAI's ChatGPT, the application credited with kicking off the generative AI frenzy, has around 500 million weekly active users. Meta, meanwhile, raised the bottom end of its annual capital expenditure forecast by $2 billion, to a range of between $66 billion and $72 billion. It also said that costs driven by its efforts to catch up in Silicon Valley's intensifying AI race would push 2026 expense growth rate above 2025's pace. Better-than-expected sales growth in the April-June period and an above-estimate revenue forecast for the current quarter, however, assured investors that strength in the social media giant's core advertising business can support the massive outlays. "The big boys are back," said Brian Mulberry, portfolio manager at Zacks Investment Management, which holds shares in all three major US cloud providers. "This simply proves the Magnificent Seven is still magnificent at this moment in time."
