‘Will bring economic stability': PM Modi commissions Vizhinjam port in Kerala
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Sea Port in Kerala in a major step towards putting the state on the global maritime map. Before inaugurating the port, PM Modi walked around the transshipment hub wearing a hard hat, taking stock of the facilities in the area.
While speaking at the inauguration event, PM Modi said that the Vizhinjam seaport will bring economic stability to both Kerala and the nation.
The Prime Minister said, 'On one hand, the big sea surrounds us with so many opportunities, while the beauty of nature lies on the other hand. In between this, the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport has emerged as a symbol of new-age development.'
The Vizhinjam Port is located in Kerala's capital city Thiruvananthapuram, and is expected to significantly boost India's presence in global shipping and trade routes. The port has been constructed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), in partnership with the government.
The project to build the now-fully operational port cost around Rs 8,867 crore, and received its commercial go-ahead in December last year after a successful trial phase.
After a successful trial phase in July 2024, Vizhinjam International Seaport has made remarkable achievements in transhipment container handling, with over 285 ships docking docking at the port since, including some of the largest container ships in the world.
MSC Türkiye, one of the world's largest container carriers, docked at the Vizhinjam last month, in a major achievement for India's first deepwater transhipment port.

Tripura: Authorities get strict as 60 per cent consumers found not paying power bills
Agartala: Around 60 per cent electricity consumers in Tripura do not pay energy bills, forcing the authorities to take drastic steps including disconnection of power lines and imposition of hefty fines against the defaulters, an official said on Saturday. A senior official of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) said that out of 9.87 lakh electricity consumers in the state, only 4.32 lakh customers are paying their bills on time. 'Lakhs of electricity consumers, mostly in rural and interior areas, do not pay their electricity bills. We have imposed a hefty fine and disconnected electric lines of the defaulters,' the official said. He said that during the past two years, the electricity lines of thousands of default consumers were disconnected. 'In many occasions, the TSECL engineers and workers were attacked or prevented when they went to disconnect the power lines of default consumers,' the official said. Tripura Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath earlier said that the TSECL has undertaken a massive effort across the state to install rooftop solar power plants in thousands of homes under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a central scheme encouraging rooftop solar power adoption through generous subsidies. Under the scheme, residents can install rooftop solar panels and not only reduce their electricity expenses to zero but also earn refunds for surplus energy supplied back to the grid, the Minister had said. 'My last power bill before installing the solar plant was Rs 8,726. Now, after switching to solar, I received a refund of Rs 763 from TSECL,' Nath said. The TSECL purchasing power from the solar power suppliers at Rs 2.65 per unit the Minister had said adding that over 300 households have installed rooftop solar plants so far in Tripura and thousands of families registered their names seeking to install such solar plants under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Nath on Friday said that the TSECL is contemplating to use drones and other technologies to detect power theft, power loss and illegal hook line usage in the state. The Minister urged the people to pay electricity bills on time and help the corporation to ensure steady power supply by discouraging theft and wastage. Tripura has been a power surplus state since 2011 and supplies electricity to other northeastern states and neighbouring Bangladesh from its several gas-based power plants.

Working on setting up major industries in Mandya: HDK
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy on Saturday reaffirmed his commitment to bringing in major industries to the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency and said he will personally seek cooperation from the State government for the region's development. Speaking at the platinum jubilee celebrations of MySugar High School in Mandya, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the aspirations of Mandya's people must be realised through unity and sustained efforts. 'I was elected with the blessings of voters who transcended caste and party lines. I am committed to striving for a meaningful development of the constituency,' he said. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had entrusted him with a key ministerial responsibility, and that he is actively working towards establishing a major industry in Mandya. The cooperation of the State government is vital to make this vision a reality. Mr. Kumaraswamy highlighted recent developments, including the sanctioning of ₹4 crore for the construction of Raitha Bhavan and ₹2.5 crore for Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. 'It is unfortunate that political infighting has surfaced over the spending of Raitha Bhavan funds.' On the future of MySugar High School, Mr. Kumaraswamy said it currently has around 30 students. The management had been told to get approval to start Pre-University courses to improve enrolment and prepare a detailed blueprint to transform this school into a model institution. 'I will ensure full support. The school's rich legacy must be preserved and nurtured,' he added. The Minister spoke about ongoing efforts to revive the Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant in Bhadravati, with a proposed investment of ₹15,000 to ₹18,000 crore and criticised the State government for allegedly creating hurdles in the revival of public sector industries like HMT. 'We are determined to protect the legacy of the Mysore Maharajas and M. Visvesvaraya,' Mr. Kumaraswamy said. Nirmalanandanatha Swami of Adichunchanagiri Math, Purushothamananda Swami, writer Krishne Gowda, former MLA K.T. Srikante Gowda, MySugar chairman Gangadhar and others were present.
