India's External Affairs on Wednesday rejected China's attempt to rename 30 places in Arunachal Pradesh last month, saying that such practices 'will not alter the reality'.
In April, China released the fourth list announcing Chinese and Tibetan names for 30 locations in Arunachal Pradesh. The new names will reportedly be reflected on official Chinese maps later this year.
The MEA said in a statement, 'We have noticed that #China has persisted with its vain and preposterous attempts to name places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Consistent with our principled position, we reject such attempts categorically. Creative naming will not alter the undeniable reality that Arunachal Pradesh was, is, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.'

Last month's attempt was the fourth time Beijing has asserted its dominance over the Indian state despite New Delhi's numerous rejections of renaming places. China claims Arunachal's southern part as its own, which it calls Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), called 'zagnan'.
The tactic of renaming locations in Arunachal has been practised by Beijing for a long time now. In 2024, the state-run Global Times quoted a government notice saying, 'Set to take effect from May 1, 2024, the implementation measures stipulate in Article 13 that 'place names in foreign languages that may harm China's territorial claims and sovereignty rights shall not be directly quoted or translated without authorisation'.'
On April 13, 2017, a day after Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama concluded a high-profile nine-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh, China renamed several locations in the region. Beijing refers to the Dalai Lama as a separatist and accuses him of seeking to establish an independent Tibetan state.
Global Times' X account withheld
The X handle of Global Times was suspended in India on Wednesday.
This comes just days after the Indian Embassy in China issued a strong warning to the media outlet, urging it to verify facts before sharing information on social media.
The Embassy said, 'Dear Global Timesnews, we would recommend you verify your facts and cross-examine your sources before pushing out this kind of disinformation.'

India-China to start steps on border demarcation, resume direct flights

New Delhi: India and China have agreed to begin delimiting less contentious stretches of their boundary to pave the way for permanent demarcation of the border, reopen border trade through Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La and Nathu La, and resume direct flights. At the 24th round of special representative-level talks in New Delhi, national security adviser Ajit Doval said India-China border has been 'quiet' and there has been an 'upward trend' in bilateral ties at the 24th round of special representative-level talks between the two countries. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi is in New Delhi for the 24th round of border talks with Doval and held a meeting with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, days before Modi travels to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. PM Modi said that India-China relations have made 'steady progress' and stressed that stable and constructive ties between the two neighbours would contribute to regional and global peace. Wang said, 'The stable and healthy development of China-India relations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries' people,' according to a statement by the Chinese foreign ministry. Both sides agreed to the reopening of border trade through the three designated trading points — Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La and Nathu La. The two countries hoped to resume direct flights at the earliest. Sources said during the talks, both sides were expected to deliberate on new confidence-building measures besides reviewing the overall situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The ministry of external affairs also said the talks with China covered de-escalation, delimitation and broader boundary issues, and stressed that India underlined the need for utmost transparency regarding the dam project. Wang's two-day visit is seen as a step in repairing ties strained since the 2020 border clash, with both governments signalling willingness to pursue dialogue and cooperation in key sectors.

"Urgent Priority": Nikki Haley Seeks Trump-PM Modi Meet On India-US Ties

Washington: Calling the partnership between India and the US a "no-brainer" to counter China, Donald Trump's Republican colleague, Nimarata Nikki Randhawa Haley, said it would be a "massive mistake" on Washington's part to let the trade spat with New Delhi escalate into "an enduring rupture." In a Newsweek op-ed published Wednesday, she warned that any crack in the India-US ties will give an opportunity to the Chinese Communist Party to play New Delhi and Washington against one another. The former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said America's top priority should be to get India-US ties back on track, as she called for a direct meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Partnership between the US and India to counter China should be a would serve America's interests to help India stand up to its increasingly aggressive northern neighbour, both economically and militarily," she said. "...It would be a massive-and preventable-mistake to balloon a trade spat between the United States and India into an enduring rupture. If that were to happen, the Chinese Communist Party would be quick to play India and the United States against one another," Haley added. She also urged India to take Trump's point over Russian oil seriously and work with the White House to find a solution. The Trump administration has slapped India with 25 per cent tariffs for purchasing Russian oil, on top of the 25 per cent duty already imposed on the import of Indian goods. She said that on its part, the US should focus on mending the rift with India and giving the relationship more high-level attention and resources, "approaching what the US devotes to China or Israel." "...The most urgent priority should be to reverse the downward spiral, which will require direct talks between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The sooner the better," Haley wrote. The former US ambassador cautioned Washington not to lose sight of what matters most-- India and America's shared goal of countering China's increasing global influence. "Decades of friendship and goodwill between the world's two largest democracies provide a solid basis to move past the current turbulence. Navigating challenging issues like trade disagreements and Russian oil imports demand hard dialogue, but difficult conversations are often the sign of a deepening partnership... To face China, the United States must have a friend in India," she added. She had run in the Republican Party presidential primaries against Donald Trump in 2024 and came in second. Later, she endorsed Trump for the 2024 presidential run, but remained a vocal critic of his policies in his second term.
