Pelicans Rookie Derik Queen Sidelined at Least 3 Months After Wrist Surgery

Fox Sports18-07-2025
New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen is likely to miss at least the start of training camp after having surgery Friday to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist.
Queen was hurt on Tuesday while playing in an NBA Summer League game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Pelicans said he would be evaluated again in approximately 12 weeks, which would be after camps have begun.
The procedure on Friday was to address a torn scapholunate ligament. It was performed by Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles.
The 6-foot-9 Queen was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after averaging 16.5 points for Maryland. His buzzer-beater against Colorado State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament sent the Terrapins into the Sweet 16, where they lost to eventual national champion Florida.
He was taken with the No. 13 pick in the draft by Atlanta, and the Pelicans acquired his rights in a trade.

Defending champion Brazil's dominant first half secures spot in Copa America Femenina final

With three goals in the first half-hour, defending champion Brazil eased past Uruguay 5-1 on Tuesday to qualify for the Copa America Femenina final for the fifth straight tournament. Amanda Gutierres opened the scoring in the 11th minute, Giovana Queiroz doubled the lead two minutes later and six-time player of the year Marta converted on a penalty kick in the 27th for the Brazilians, who have won the past four editions of the Copa America. Gutierres added a goal in the 65th off a free kick, giving her five for the tournament. She's behind only Paraguay's Claudia Martinez, who has six. Dudinha finished off the scoring in the 86th. Brazil will play for the championship next Saturday against Colombia, which progressed to the final by edging Argentina 5-4 on penalty kicks on Monday. The match will be played at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, in the capital Quito. It will be a rematch of the final of the 2022 Copa America Femenina that was played in Colombia and that Brazil won 1-0. The 39-year-old Marta, who has played in six World Cups and six Olympics, has 120 goals in 205 games with Brazil. The Brazilian women have won eight of the nine editions of the Copa America and are considered the best team in South America. Their best finish at the World Cup was runner-up in 2007 and they have reached the Olympic final three times, including in Paris 2024, where they lost to the U.S. Reporting by The Associated Press. USC lands another No. 1 prospect in women's basketball as Saniyah Hall commits

Saniyah Hall, ESPN's No. 1 women's basketball prospect in the high school class of 2026, has committed to play at Southern California. Hall, a 6-foot-2 guard from northeast Ohio, announced her decision last week on ESPN's 'NBA Today.' USC has landed three of the last four No. 1 recruits, with Hall joining JuJu Watkins in 2023 and Jasmine Davidson in 2025. Watkins is expected to miss most of the upcoming season with a torn ACL that she suffered during the women's NCAA Tournament. She would most likely return for the 2026-27 season, which would be Hall's freshman year. Hall, who turns 17 on Wednesday, recently helped the United States win gold at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup. She averaged 19.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists and was named MVP of the tournament. Hall will play for SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, for her senior season after transferring from Montverde Academy in central Florida.

Ohio State basketball to host in-state opponent in preseason open exhibition

According to a report from Eleven Warriors, sources have indicated that the Ohio State basketball team will host a preseason exhibition with in-state MAC opponent, Ohio University. Even more importantly, the scrimmage will be open to the public, so fans will get a look at the 2025-2026 Buckeyes prior to the start of the season. The game will also mark the return of a former Ohio State assistant coach, Jeff Boals, who was a former Ohio State head coach Thad Matta assistant from 2009 to 2016. Since taking over in Athens, Boals and the Bobcats have done very well, even winning the MAC Conference Tournament in 2021. It's an important year for Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler and the Buckeyes. The momentum the program had at the end of the 2023-2024 season, when Diebler took over when Chris Holtmann was let go, was all but lost when the team failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-straight season. OSU retained three key pieces on the roster with the return of Bruce Thronton, Devin Royal, and John Mobley Jr., but will have several new faces that must mesh and come together for the Buckeyes to "make a jump" this season. We should get a little peek behind the curtain when the date and time of the scrimmage against Ohio University is announced.
