Shubman Gill will be a mix of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as captain: Jos Buttler

England batter Jos Buttler feels that India's new Test captain Shubman Gill will be a perfect mix of his predecessors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gill has been appointed as India's Test captain, following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. The 25-year-old will be leading the team for the first time in the longest format in the upcoming series against England, set to begin from June 20.advertisementAhead of Gill's first Test as captain, Buttler, who played under him in Gujarat Titans (GT) during the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), shared insights about his captaincy, mentioning that he's a mature man.'Yeah, there's a lot of buzz around this series. The IPL just finished, but even during that, there was huge interest in who'd become India's next captain. Shubman Gill is now leading the side. He was my captain at Gujarat Titans—an impressive player and a really mature young man,' said Buttler in a podcast with Stuart Broad.
He also revealed that Gill possesses qualities of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as a leader and will be a perfect mix of both.'He's calm and measured when he speaks. But on the field, he has fight and intensity. He's passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. Kohli brought aggression and in-your-face competitiveness, while Rohit is more laid-back—cool, calm, and collected. Shubman feels like he's somewhere in between. He's learned from both, but he's also his own man,' he added.advertisementGill has led India in five T20Is so far, during the tour of Zimbabwe in 2024. However, he doesn't have any experience of leading in Tests. He has played 32 Test matches in his career so far and scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds and seven fifties to his name. However, he doesn't have a memorable record away from India, having scored just 88 runs from three Tests played in England with the highest score of 28. Hence, the new captain has a massive task to turn his fortunes in the upcoming tour.

India vs England: Should Jasprit Bumrah play all five tests? What will India's bowling attack look like without him?

Seven days. Seven days. Eight days. Three days. That is not code language. It's the minimum number of rest days between each Test on India's five-match tour of England, starting 20 June. And minimum is what you need to plan for when you have the world's best bowler in your team—and he must be workload-managed. Here's what India's Test schedule looks like for this tour: 20–24 June: First Test, Leeds 2–6 July: Second Test, Birmingham 10–14 July: Third Test, Lord's 23–27 July: Fourth Test, Manchester 31 July–4 August: Fifth Test, The Oval Assuming all five Tests go the full distance, a rather generous assumption, the gaps between each match are, respectively, seven, seven, eight, and three days. Will those be enough? Jasprit Bumrah is a national treasure, but he needs to be handled with care. How India's Test series in England unfolds will depend largely on how Bumrah performs. But the issue for India is that Bumrah won't be a starter in every single Test. At the pre-departure press conference, coach Gautam Gambhir indicated Bumrah would play only three Tests. 'We haven't taken that call. Which three games is he going to play?' Gambhir had said in Mumbai on 5 June. 'We are going to have a discussion with him, and depending on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well, and that is important.' Looking at the schedule, it seems clear that Bumrah can't realistically play both the fourth and fifth Tests, given the short three-day turnaround between them. Between Old Trafford (Manchester) and The Oval (London), India might prefer to field Bumrah in Manchester, as it is traditionally more seam-friendly than The Oval. Bumrah should almost certainly play the first Test. So, if he is to be used in only three games, the most logical choices are the first, third, and fourth Tests. The bigger question: Is there a way for Bumrah to play a fourth Test? If so, the best option might be to have him play the first three and then the fifth. Each of the first three Tests has at least a week-long gap, assuming they all go the full five days. In all likelihood, a couple might finish earlier, offering Bumrah extra recovery time. Of course, the final decision will be made by the team management and Bumrah himself, depending on how the series evolves and what his workload looks like. India has ample seam-bowling options on tour: Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep, and Shardul Thakur. Siraj is the natural leader of the attack in Bumrah's absence. Prasidh showed in IPL 2025 that he has gained greater control over his length; once he nails that consistently, he becomes a potent force. Prasidh also gives India the tall, hit-the-deck bowler they have lacked when coming up against such attacks on pitches designed to suit them more. The remaining three pacers offer distinct strengths, giving India the flexibility to adapt. For swing and seam, there's Akash Deep. For a left-arm angle, there's Arshdeep. For batting depth and control, there's Shardul. India could also choose to go with four seamers in their XI. Among spinners, Kuldeep Yadav is the biggest wicket-taking threat, while Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar offer more with the bat. Without Bumrah, India should strongly consider Kuldeep. That decision could influence their pace combination as well—if Kuldeep is picked and the batting looks thin, Shardul may come in to balance the side. Bumrah is unique and irreplaceable. Trying to find a direct replacement won't work. What India must do is build a bowling attack capable of taking 20 wickets. With the options they have, that is still very much possible.

Jasprit Bumrah and Joe Root will re-create Anderson-Kohli rivalry: England director

England's Managing Director of Men's Cricket, Rob Key, has said that India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and Joe Root will re-create James Anderson and Virat Kohli's rivaly in the upcoming Test series. India are set to take on England in a five-match Test series set to begin from June big names will not be seen playing in the upcoming series as India's Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin have announced retirements. On the other hand, England will be without their legendary seam duo of James Anderson and Stuart the absence of big names will not take any excitement away from the series as Rob Key has backed Bumrah and Root to recreate a mouthwatering battle between Kohli and Anderson. 'I watch the young Indian players coming through. I believe that with the talent I see in white-ball cricket, even in the IPL, talented players can adapt much easier than people think. You don't need to have played 50-100 red-ball games to be able to put your best foot forward in Test cricket. And those rivalries will emerge. You've got probably one of our best players, if not the best — Joe Root — against one of the best bowlers I've seen in Bumrah. So that's going to be a fascinating contest,' Rob Key was quoted as saying by Times of has had a wood over Root throughout his career, having dismissed him nine times in Tests so far. Hence, the India speedster will look to continue his dominance against the England Rob Key also expressed excitement about watching Jamie Smith and Rishabh Pant play in the upcoming series.'Rishabh Pant and Jamie Smith, those two wicketkeepers that play in such a captivating style, have the ability to throw counter punches,' he played a breathtaking innings of 146 during his last Test in England as he helped rescue India from a precarious position of 98/5 in the first innings. Meanwhile, Smith has got his career off to a terrific start, having scored 641 runs from his first ten Tests. The duo are expected to play pivotal roles for their respective teams in the upcoming series.

‘This guy's 20 years younger than me': Jos Buttler recalls moment he felt Vaibhav Suryavanshi is the ‘best player I've ever seen'

Jos Buttler was in for a major surprise when his former franchise, Rajasthan Royals, unleashed the Vaibhav Suryavanshi phenomenon in their second meeting against the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 season. The GT wicket-keeper witnessed carnage from behind the stumps as the 14-year-old Suryavanshi destroyed T20 records with his 35-ball century, the fastest-ever by an Indian in the history of the IPL and the second-quickest behind Chris Gayle's 30-ball ton in 2013. However, it was not a superb onslaught in Jaipur that made Buttler hail Suryavanshi as the best player he has ever seen. But more on the first impressions now. 'The innings against us — you know, our bowling attack consists of Mohammed Siraj, a brilliant international bowler, Prasidh Krishna, an international bowler, Rashid Khan, the best T20 bowler — and he just… the scale of the sixes. They weren't just clearing the boundary — they were big sixes. I mean, you're literally a yard from him. Big sixes. And a 35-ball 100 — it was outrageous,' Buttler said on the For the Love of Cricket podcast with his former teammate, Stuart Broad. Suryavanshi's cracking century would make light work of a 210-run target that Rajasthan would chased down in only 15.5 overs. 'It's inspiring and deflating at the same time. This guy's 20 years younger than me, and he's just smashing us all around the park. But yeah, absolutely — shockwaves throughout the cricket world,' he added. Buttler was, however, awestruck when Suryavanshi played a watchful hand against Chennai Super Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, scoring 57 off 33 deliveries. 'I was watching on TV. And, you know, Chennai have Ravi Ashwin, Jadeja — proper seasoned pros. And he was like, bang, hit them out into the sand. And then sort of, you know, knocked one out to cover, like, I'm so in control, I'll just take one now, trot down to the other end. And at that moment, I'm like — this guy's the best player I've ever seen. Like, I'm so blown away,' Buttler added. Suryavanshi will soon be in action in England for an under-19 tour with the India U19 side, starting June 27.
