90s Arabic Pop Meets Alt-Rock on Pink Seasalt's ‘Matgily Tany'
Aug 06, 2025
I first came across Mahmoud Hafez, aka Pink Seasalt, at Memphis Records' first iteration of Tidal Dream Festival. Right there on the Nile side stage, he was belting out his debut record 'Out of Luck' with a quintessential guitar fingerpicking technique like a veritable rockstar, drawing Beatlemania-esque fangirl screams from the crowd.
Back then, he was exclusively singing in English, yet he managed to carve out a distinct sound for himself, borrowing influences from the likes of Mac DeMarco, Tame Impala, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and colouring them with his bedroom production and poignant songwriting that felt like something outside of the 70s psychedelic rock era.
Recently, Pink Seasalt has been exploring Arabic music more, both lyrically and sonically, through a string of frequent releases such as 'Shreet Kharban' and '3ala Toul'. He has recently released his third single in 2025, 'Matgily Tany', a refreshing summer tune that showcases his signature mellow fuzz in a whole new shape.
Drawing inspiration from 90s and 2000s Arabic pop and alternative rock, the singer-songwriter combines the distorted drum patterns of rock with funky basslines and shimmering synthwork of nostalgic pop. In the vocalisations, however, there are hints of R&B elements, akin to the work of Mk.gee and Dijon. As a whole, 'Matgily Tany' feels like the Arabic version of The Strokes but with a twist that's inherently his own.

Arabic Renditions of Beloved Global Hits
From Simone to Elyanna, Arab artists have been reimagining global hits in their mother tongue for decades—creating covers that feel like echoes from a more familiar parallel world. Aug 08, 2025 Possessing a charm all its own, Arabic has lent its poeticism to covers of international hits for decades – making them hit all the more close to home. Fairouz's Arabic lyrics on her cover of John Lennon's 'Imagine', 'Yemken', much like 90s pop icon Simone's on her cover of 'Cheri Cheri Lady', feel like postcards from a parallel world. Jadal's live acoustic rendition of Coldplay's glossy 'Adventure of a Lifetime' feels like a translation of feeling, with the delicate strum of the oud enriching the song's emotional core. The blend of regional instrumentation and Arabic lyrics gives these already beloved tracks an added layer of relatability and character. Arab artists continue to breathe new life into iconic songs from around the world. This year saw Elyanna reimagine Bollywood's 'Deewani Mastani' with her sultry Arab pop cover, 'Kayani', while TARA's 'Ya Helwe Ciao' embraced the adaptable spirit of a passed-down anthem like 'Bella Ciao' – just the latest in a long, ever-evolving line of cross-cultural covers. Simone - Tany Tany (Cheri Cheri Lady Cover) Fairouz - Yemken (Imagine Cover) Elyanna - Kayani (Deewani Mastani Cover) TÄRA - Ya Helwe Ciao Jadal - Adventure of a Lifetime Hayajan - Comfortably Numb Mashrou' Leila - Get Lucky Rachid Taha - Rock El Casbah ('Rock the Casbah' Cover) Jacqueline - Ana Baddi Ish ('I Will Survive' Cover) The Jets - Adaree Lieh ('Daddy Cool' Cover)
