The 2025 WNBA regular season begins Friday. On the eve of opening night, though, the Connecticut Sun are still finalizing their roster.
On Thursday, the Sun announced they have made a surprising roster move, waiving former All-Star guard Diamond DeShields.

The 2025 season was expected to be DeShields' first with the Sun. Connecticut signed the guard to a one-year contract in February.
'We are thrilled to welcome Diamond to the Connecticut Sun,' said Sun General Manager Morgan Tuck on Feb. 3. 'Her wealth of experience and resilience through her career speaks to her exceptional character, dedication and passion for the game.
"As a veteran in our league with championship experience, she brings a level of leadership, versatility, and competitiveness that will be invaluable both on and off the court."
Tuck also called DeShields a "great fit" for the Sun.

DeShields made the WNBA All-Star Team and second-team All-WNBA during the 2019 season with the Chicago Sky. In 2019, DeShields averaged 16.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

During the 2021 season, she averaged 11.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Sky, who won the WNBA championship.
DeShields joined the Phoenix Mercury in 2022 after four seasons with Chicago. She played one season for the Mercury and then missed the 2023 campaign because of a knee injury.
Last season, DeShields returned to the Sky, where she averaged a career-low 4.5 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest.
The Sky drafted DeShields at No. 3 overall in the 2018 WNBA Draft. During her college career, she starred as a freshman with the North Carolina Tar Heels. DeShields then transferred to the Tennessee Volunteers, where she made the All-conference team twice.

DeShields comes from an athletic family. Her father, Delino, played 13 seasons in the MLB. Her brother, Delino DeShields Jr., also played Major League Baseball.
The 2025 WNBA regular season begins Friday night. The Sun will play their first game Sunday against the Washington Mystics.

Angel Reese's Two-Word Message to Shaquille O'Neal's Caitlin Clark Request

Angel Reese's Two-Word Message to Shaquille O'Neal's Caitlin Clark Request originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Before Angel Reese was breaking WNBA rebounding records and making the league's All-Star team as a rookie, she was a standout forward for the LSU Tigers. There, she and her teammates notoriously took down Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes during the 2023 National Championship Game. Advertisement As a result of the 20.9 points and 14.4 rebounds per game that she averaged across two years at LSU, the Chicago Sky made her the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. This on-court prowess also spurred a relationship between her and NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal, a former LSU Tiger and member of the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (10).Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images O'Neal was integral in getting Reese her sponsorship deal with Reebok. It was recently announced that Reese's signature shoe line with the brand would be released sometime in 2026, but O'Neal had a special request for when she debuted them. 'I just want everybody walking down the street in Reebok," O'Neal said. "In a perfect world, say yes, please say yes. What is it? In a perfect world, I would like you to debut them against Caitlin Clark.' Advertisement Clark and Reese formed quite the rivalry in that 2023 National Championship game, but now, it has continued at the professional level. Because of the magnitude of each game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky, Reese easily agreed to this idea. 'Oh yeah!' Reese said. The Fever have won four of the five matchups between these two teams since Clark and Reese entered the league. This includes a 93 to 58 victory on opening day of the 2025 WNBA season. Reese, after making the 2024 WNBA All-Star and All-Rookie teams last season, is averaging 10.0 points and a league-leading 12.3 rebounds per game in 2025. Clark has missed the last three games due to injury, but was averaging 19.0 points, 9.3 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game through four contests. Angel Reese Reveals One Desire Before Indiana Fever Game

Angel Reese Reveals One Desire Before Indiana Fever Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky earned a 2-4 record through the first month of the 2025 WNBA season, placing them in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Advertisement A 93 to 58 loss to the Indiana Fever on opening day kickstarted a four-game losing streak to begin the season, but the Sky responded with two straight wins against the Dallas Wings last week. After giving up 90 points or more in five consecutive games to begin the year, they held on for a 94 to 83 win last Saturday. Now, the Sky will kick off their slate of Commissioner's Cup games by hosting the 3-4 Fever on Saturday evening. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images 2024 WNBA All-Star Angel Reese is averaging a double-double once again this season for the Sky with 10.0-point and 12.3-rebound per game averages. Her rebounds per game are leading the WNBA once again. Advertisement The Sky's rematch against the Fever has a bit of a twist, however. Saturday's game will be played at the United Center, home of the NBA's Chicago Bulls. Reese spoke about playing at this historic venue just before tipoff and expressed one desire. "I think this is gonna be the first of many," Reese said. "We can continue to see this and have all our games at NBA arenas." In the first matchup between the two teams this season, 2024 First-Team All-WNBA guard Caitlin Clark recorded a 20-point triple-double for the Fever en route to a dominant victory. Reese paced the Sky with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Advertisement Saturday's game will be significant for the WNBA standings, as Chicago has a chance to move ahead of the Fever with a win. Moving to 3-4 would also put them into the playoff picture. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST. With record crowd watching, Sky get blown out by Fever in first WNBA game at United Center

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Sky coach Tyler Marsh recalled working the 2020 NBA All-Star game at the United Center when he was an assistant with the Toronto Raptors. He mentioned that his first experience at a WNBA All-Star game was also in Chicago — two years later at Wintrust Arena. 'It's been cool moments,' Marsh said. There was another big one on Saturday night. Though the Sky got blown out by Indiana 79-52 , it was the first WNBA game at the United Center. 'It's an incredible moment for this league,' said Marsh, in his first season coaching the Sky . 'It's an incredible moment for our team and our staff and our city, really. I think that's the cool part about it is we get to represent our city in this building on a historic night. It's not lost among us how important and significant it is — and for myself to be part of that and to represent the W in that capacity, to represent the Sky in that capacity, is something that I don't take for granted.' A matchup that got moved from the smaller Wintrust Arena and was supposed to feature two of the league's brightest young stars in Chicago's Angel Reese and Indiana's Caitlin Clark didn't play out as envisioned. The Fever rolled over the Sky for the second time this season . And they did it without the injured Clark. The 2024 Rookie of the Year missed her fourth straight game because of a quad issue and watched the primetime, nationally televised game from the sideline. That had to be a bummer for the fans who showed up wearing Clark jerseys. The enthusiastic crowd of 19,496 surpassed Chicago's previous high of 16,444 in 2016 at Allstate Arena in suburban Rosemont, though tickets weren't hard to find. They were listed on StubHub for as little as $9 a few hours before tipoff. By comparison, when Clark and Reese played their first game in Chicago last season, courtside seats at Wintrust Arena were going for $5,000 on Ticketmaster an hour before tipoff. That game drew the celebrities, with Chicago native Chance The Rapper, comedian Jason Sudeikis and New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson in the sellout crowd along with Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Cheryl Swoopes. Even so, this was a big night. And the significance of playing at the United Center wasn't lost on the players and coaches. The Sky and Fever will meet again at the home of the NBA's Bulls and NHL's Blackhawks on July 27. 'We just continue to make milestones for women,' Reese said. 'Women belong here. I think this is gonna be the first of many. Obviously, we have two here this year. But we could continue to see this — and all our games at NBA arenas.' Reese and Clark have helped carry the league to new heights in popularity after taking their rivalry from LSU and Iowa to the pros. They brought the style and swagger that captivated the nation when they were going at it in college and spurring debates about sport and society. But the night wasn't just about them. 'It just shows how much women's basketball is growing, and it's amazing to see it,' said Sky center Kamilla Cardoso, another young star. For Fever assistant Austin Kelly, who was filling in with coach Stephanie White missing the game for personal reasons, playing at the United Center brought back memories of watching the Bulls during the Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen dynasty. 'I was born in '89,' he said. 'I played AAU basketball. We were on the road, me and my teammates were crammed into hotels — the Days Inn or whatever it was — watching them in June. A lot of memories of watching Jordan, watching the Bulls growing up. I think they were everyone's favorite team, especially youngsters like us growing up in the '90s.' Marsh said Sky player-development coach Aaron Johnson, who's from Chicago, had this game circled on his proverbial calendar. 'Since it got announced that we would be playing this game, it was something that he really got emotional about. Not to put him on Front Street, but this is a building that he grew up idolizing and sitting in the nosebleeds, and going from that to being able to step on the floor, those are the types of moments that you can't really put a price on,' Marsh said. You take those experiences for what it is and it comes with the moment, but also, you're extremely excited for our players to be a part of that as well.' ___ AP WNBA:
