Schools wrap: Paarl Gim hand DHS first loss as Wildeklawer rugby festival closes
Paarl Gim powered to a 21-13 half-time lead over Durban High School and flyhalf Louis Koen and hard-running No 8 Quinton Potgieter were prominent in the second half as the Cape schoolboys stretched their lead to win 47-20.
The result marks DHS' first loss of 2025 while Paarl Gim improve to 6-2-0 from six wins and two draws.
The try from Diamantveld tighthead prop Dian Ellis broke the deadlock while captain Jonathan Harding scored a hat-trick in a 38-31 win against Maritzburg College.
Paarl Boys' High hooker Christiaan Grundlingh and flank Jayden Joubert each scored a hat-trick in a 13-try, 85-0 demolition of Monument.
Noordheuwel held their nerve as flyhalf Jeandre Uithaler kicked a long-range penalty to edge Outeniqua 35-32 in a roller-coaster match that saw the lead change hands multiple times.
Waterkloof and Stellenberg played to a 17-17 stalemate as centre Armand Potgieter mustered the boys from Bellville to fight back in the second half with Waterkloof defending for their lives at the death.
Despite their best efforts, Boland Landbou had no answer for the raw firepower of Affies as the boys from Pretoria ran at will to win 74-14.
Two late tries from Jeppe salvaged some respect in a match dominated by Oakdale who converted a 14-6 half-time lead into a 47-25 victory.
Paul Roos Gymasium came back from an early deficit with a second-quarter surge that saw them jog off at the break with a 24-7 advantage over EG Jansen. The second half was a closer contest but the class of Paul Roos shone through in a 46-17 victory.
Fullback Lamla Mgedezi scored a brace while centre Darius Erwee chipped in with a try and nine points from the boot as Grey College ran in six tries to beat Garsfontein 45-29.

DHS tennis dominates the courts The Dundee High School (DHS) tennis teams delivered exceptional performances last week, securing back-to-back victories. They defeated Sarel Cilliers 11-1 and followed up with another convincing win against Ladysmith High, taking the match 11-2. DHS learners shine at ATKV Redenaars Two DHS learners made the school proud at the national round of the prestigious ATKV Redenaars competition. Mia van der Merwe placed in the top 15 in the unprepared speech category, while Pari Reddy achieved a top 15 position for her prepared speech. The school commended both learners for their dedication and success at this high-level competition. Mixed results for DHS cricket teams The DHS U/15 cricket team faced a challenging encounter against Pionier, going down by 132 runs despite a valiant effort. On Friday, the first cricket team travelled to Pongola for an eagerly anticipated tour. Due to time constraints, matches were played in a shortened 15-over format. In their first match against Newcastle High School, DHS struggled early, finding themselves at 34/4. Kiandri Bierbaum steadied the innings with an unbeaten 24 runs, supported by JC Botha, helping the side to 131/8 in 15 overs. Excellent bowling and solid fielding saw Newcastle restricted to 56 runs, handing DHS a 75-run victory. Wicket-takers included Heindre Smit (2), Stuart Talanda (2), Kiandri Bierbaum (1) and Dillan Guelpa (1). Bierbaum was named 'Player of the Match'. In their clash with Amanzimtoti High School, DHS posted an impressive 164/4, with standout batting from Guelpa (83 off 43 balls), Bierbaum (35* off 25) and Talanda (25 off 14). Strong bowling from Smit (three wickets), Shelton Ramsey (3), Reuel Lalloo (1) and Jayden Olivier (1) saw Amanzimtoti limited to 99/8, giving DHS a 65-run victory. Smit was named 'Man of the Match'. Markus Muller makes big decision on future, signs for THIS team
South Africa's brightest schoolboy rugby stars are set to take centre stage in Cape Town this week as the Under-18 international series kicks off. The SA U18 and SA U18 'A' teams will face tough opposition from France, England, Ireland and Georgia in what promises to be a showcase of emerging talent. In a dramatic prelude to the international series, Paarl Boys' High claimed a last-gasp 35-33 victory over arch-rivals Paarl Gimnasium at a packed Faure Street Stadium last Saturday. Paarl Gim's Markus Muller, widely regarded as one of the top schoolboy prospects in recent memory, delivered a stellar individual performance. The captain and centre scored a try, slotted three conversions, and nailed four penalties in a near-flawless kicking display. However, it wasn't enough to hold off a five-try effort from Boishaai, led by the ice-cold boot of Tristan Joubert. With the derby behind them, attention now shifts to the international series, where Muller will lead the SA U18 side into battle against France U18 on Friday at Hoërskool Durbanville. He's expected to link up in midfield with Ethan Adams, the destructive Grey College centre who also dominated this year's school season. Coach Lwazi Zangqa faces a selection puzzle with both Muller and Adams excelling at outside centre (No 13). Muller, however, has shifted to inside centre for both Western Province and the national set-up, where he also wears the captain's armband. After one of the most successful schoolboy seasons in recent memory, Markus Muller has signed his first professional contract with the Stormers, staying within the Western Province set-up. He's joined by his Paarl Gim team-mate Quintin Potgieter (loose forward) and Craven Week centre partner Randall-John Davids (Rondebosch), who also inked deals with the Stormers. This past weekend there was a general consensus that Paarl Boys' High epic comeback win over rivals Paarl Gimnasium had served to see them leapfrog their local rivals to claim the 'unofficial' No 1 First XV rugby ranking.
