‘American Idol' Has Produced Some Of The Most Successful Female Artists This Century

For years, American Idol was the biggest reality TV show on television. The series churning out superstar after superstar, with many enjoying lengthy and successful careers.
The program created household names, helped sold millions of records, and, for a time, seemed like a guaranteed pipeline to fame. While the show is still on the air, its ability to launch major careers has dwindled significantly. Despite this fact, the impact it has had on the music industry is undeniable — and a recent Billboard ranking of the top 100 women artists of the twenty-first century proves just how influential the competition once was.
Not one, not two, but three American Idol alumni appear on the list. Two of those winners even come remarkably close to landing inside the top 10.
Kelly Clarkson, the first-ever American Idol champion, lands at No. 11 on Billboard's list. This ranking isn't shocking — if anything, it's expected. Clarkson has been a mainstay in pop music for more than two decades, charting hit after hit while evolving from reality TV winner to one of the industry's most respected vocalists, and a TV host herself.
Since her American Idol win in 2002, Clarkson has amassed multiple No. 1 hits, including 'Since U Been Gone' and 'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You).' She's also released several bestselling albums, with Breakaway, Stronger, and Meaning of Life standing out as major successes, all of which helped send her toward the top 10 on this historic ranking.
Not far behind Clarkson comes Carrie Underwood, at No. 13. That's a lofty placement, considering the fact that her primary success has been within the country music genre.
Underwood's placement is a bit more surprising, when compared to Clarkson's. Country stars, even massively successful ones, don't always achieve the same crossover dominance as pop artists.
That said, Underwood has continually defied expectations throughout her career. Since winning American Idol in 2005, she has reigned as one of the biggest names in country music. Songs like 'Before He Cheats,' 'Jesus, Take the Wheel,' and 'Cowboy Casanova,' as well as huge albums such as Some Hearts, Blown Away, and Cry Pretty, have helped her become a country standard – and even find fans beyond the one style.
Fantasia Barrino, yet another American Idol champion, also finds a spot on the ranking — though much lower than her fellow winners. She appears at No. 98, narrowly making the Billboard tally. While her career hasn't reached the same commercial heights as Clarkson's or Underwood's, she found enough success early on to find space on this tally.
Fantasia's career took off after her 2004 victory, with hits like 'I Believe,' 'When I See U,' and 'Truth Is,' and people fell in love with her because of her stunning voice, while many related to her backstory. She's largely remained successful in the R&B genre, but early on, she scored more general wins.
While American Idol hasn't produced a megastar in quite some time – when was the last winner to score several Hot 100 hits? – its past successes continue to shape the music industry. Clarkson, Underwood, and Fantasia's placements on Billboard's women-focused list highlight just how dominant the show was in the 2000s through the early 2010s. At its peak, it didn't just create stars, it produced icons who could compete with the biggest names in the business.

Don Rickles almost mutinied against Martin Scorsese during ‘Casino': ‘You don't have to take this from him!'
Comedy legend Don Rickles got fed up with Martin Scorsese during filming of 'Casino' 30 years ago, the Oscar-winning director revealed. Before a Tribeca Film Festival screening Thursday at the Beacon Theatre celebrating the anniversary of 'Casino,' Scorsese and the film's star Robert De Niro remembered a night when things with Rickles — aka Mr. Warmth — got particularly heated on set. 3 Martin Scorsese reminisced about working with Don Rickles during 'Casino.' Erik Pendzich/Shutterstock Advertisement 3 Rickles, who played Billy Sherbert, died in 2017. Getty Images 'We were in a very tough schedule, and we were all pretty tired,' Scorsese, 82, told the crowd of the Las Vegas night shoots that would start around 11 p.m. 'But by that point, Don couldn't take it anymore. He couldn't, because I was driving him crazy. I'm telling him, 'Don, I'll be ready in an hour. Two hours, three hours later, he was still waiting for us. He was dying. 'Get me out of here!'' Advertisement Scorsese added: 'He yelled at one point to the crew, 'You don't have to take this from him!'' Rickles played Billy Sherbert, the head of security for De Niro's Sam 'Ace' Rothstein. But the director and De Niro mostly shared fond memories of Rickles, who died in 2017. Born in Queens, the comic became a Vegas headliner with the help of friend Frank Sinatra and was eventually synonymous with Sin City. 'Don was really a sweet guy, everybody knew that,' De Niro, 81, said. 'And his style — he could be right on when he was acerbic and insulting, but, you know, deep down he was… a sweet guy.' Advertisement 3 Scorsese and Robert De Niro sat down with W. Kamau Bell during the Tribeca Film Festival. Getty Images for Tribeca Festival Scorsese went on to say that Rickles had a point. They were filming at difficult hours in a working casino that even advertised that the famous names were there. 'I was shocked because [the casino] had a kind of a ticker, you know, with a sign outside,' Scorsese said. 'It said, 'Come and watch the shooting: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Don Rickles — appearing now!' Advertisement Scorsese added: 'I go in, and my A.D., Joseph Reidy, he looked at me, and he said, 'Are you ready?' I said, 'Yes, yes. What's the problem?' He opened the door. A wall of sound.' 'About 10 o'clock at night. Everybody was playing, gambling, and you couldn't quite hear each other,' he said. 'But by around one in the morning, they quieted down.'

HBO Releases Trailer for 'Surviving Ohio State' Documentary
Source: Getty Images A new HBO documentary is set to pull the curtain back on one of the darkest chapters in Ohio State University's history. Surviving Ohio State , produced by George Clooney and directed by Oscar and Emmy winner Eva Orner, premieres June 17th on HBO and will stream on Max. The project has been in development for years and features interviews with several former Buckeye athletes who say they were abused by Dr. Richard Strauss during his time as a university physician from 1978 to 1998. RELATED: Buckeyes Visit the White House, JD Vance Fumbles Trophy [PHOTOS] The trailer, which dropped June 5th, gives a preview of what's to come: firsthand accounts from survivors, including former All-American wrestler and UFC champ Mark Coleman. The film also features stories from Adam and Michael DiSabato, Will Knight, Al Novakowski, Rockey Ratliff, Dan Ritchie, and Mike Schyck; athletes whose names many in the OSU community will recognize. Strauss died by suicide in 2005. By then, he had already faced years of internal complaints that largely went ignored. Though the State Medical Board of Ohio opened an investigation in 1996, it stalled and was quietly closed in 2002 without any disciplinary action. A deeper, public acknowledgement of the abuse didn't begin until 2018, when new complaints surfaced and the university launched an independent investigation. That uncovered abuse allegations from more than 170 students. RELATED: LeBron James to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Ohio State While Ohio State was not involved in the production, the university remains at the center of the story. The documentary is based in part on a 2020 Sports Illustrated article by Jon Wertheim, who also serves as an executive producer. The film will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Monday.
