Canada says G7 finance ministers to focus on restoring stability, growth
BANFF, Alberta -Finance ministers from the Group of Seven industrial democracies will try to agree on policies to restore global growth and stability, Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said on Tuesday, acknowledging that tensions over new U.S. tariffs would continue.
The meetings over the next two days in the mountain resort town of Banff, Alberta, will be about "back to basics" and will include discussions about excess manufacturing capacity, non-market practices and financial crimes, Champagne told a news conference. "I think to deliver for the citizens that we represent, our mission is really about restoring stability and growth," Champagne said
He said discussions would take place within the G7 and bilaterally with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about the impact of President Donald Trump's new tariffs on trading partners, and that there would always be tension around such issues.
"But at the same time, there's a lot we can achieve together," Champagne said. "There's a lot that we are looking to coordinate, our actions, and really tackle some of the big issues around over-capacity, non-market practices and financial crimes."
Bessent has sought to push G7 allies to more effectively confront China's state-led, export-driven economic policies, arguing that this has led to excess manufacturing capacity that is flooding the world with cheap goods and threatening G7 and other market economies.
But G7 members Japan, Germany, France and Italy all face a potential doubling of reciprocal U.S. duties to 20% or more in early July. Britain negotiated a limited trade deal that leaves it saddled with 10% U.S. tariffs on most goods, and host Canada is still struggling with Trump's separate 25% duty on many exports.
Champagne also said that the G7 group would discuss ways to better police low-value package shipments from China to combat smuggling. The Trump administration has ended a duty-free exemption for Chinese shipments valued under $800, which it has blamed for the trafficking of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals.
Reducing fentanyl trafficking is critical to lifting Trump's 25% duties on some Canadian and Mexican goods, as well as a 20% duty on Chinese goods.
Champagne appeared with Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko and pledged to continue Canada's support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russia's invasion. He also said Canada is considering helping Ukraine build a Canadian-style pension system.
Marchenko told reporters that he would seek to reiterate Ukraine's arguments for strengthening sanctions against Russia, including through lowering the level of the G7-led $60-per-barrel price cap imposed on Russian crude oil exports.

Contribute now New Delhi: Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi, who has once again claimed that US President Donald Trump compelled Prime Minister Narendra Modi to 'surrender' during the India-Pakistan conflict, said he was only saying the same thing Trump has repeated '11 times'. 'Trump … has said 11 times that Modi stopped due to pressure from him. I am only saying what Trump is saying and has said 11 times,' Gandhi said on Friday (June 6) to mediapersons. He continued: 'Modi has not made any statement on Trump's comments. Modi should say that Trump is lying.' Earlier in the day, Gandhi claimed while addressing an event in Bihar's Rajgir that Trump had repeatedly said he made Modi surrender and that the latter was unable to say that the US president was lying because he was speaking the truth. 'You know that he has a habit of surrendering,' Gandhi said referring to the Union government's decision to enumerate castes during the next population census, something that had been a demand of opposition parties in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. 'Trump has said 11 times – 11 times – that 'I made Narendra Modi surrender'. He's said it 11 times, in public. Modi is not able to object to this. Modi is not able to say that Trump is lying. Because it is the truth,' the Congress MP alleged. On Tuesday, Gandhi while addressing a function in Bhopal claimed that Modi obeyed Trump's diktat to 'surrender'. Since then the US government has said in a court filing that Trump used trade access as incentive to 'avert a full-scale war' between India and Pakistan. The Modi government has denied claims that the US mediated the cessation of hostilities or that trade came up in discussions between Indian and American officials during the conflict. Modi has not personally addressed the claims. Meanwhile, the BJP has called Gandhi's mentality 'sick' and 'dangerous'. 'Legal Process Is Underway': Mark Carney On Nijjar Case Probe After Inviting PM Modi To G7
Last Updated: Mark Carney's remarks came after he invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney refused to comment on the ongoing probe in the killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, saying that a legal process is underway. He further asserted that Canada follows rule of law and no one would interfere in the ongoing investigations. Carney' predecessor Justin Trudeau had openly accused New Delhi of plotting the murder of Nijjar. Carney's remarks came after he invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As this year's chair of the G7, Carney said it's important to have India at the table in Kananaskis while world leaders discuss issues including energy security and critical minerals, given the country's size and key role in the global supply chain. PM Modi said that he had a 'warm" conversation with newly elected Canadian PM. He congratulated him and confirmed his participation in the upcoming G7 Summit. Mark Carney, a former central banker and climate finance advocate, became Canada's Prime Minister after leading the Liberal Party to victory in the recent general election. Indo-Canadian Souring Ties Indo-Canadian ties have nosedived in the aftermath of Nijjar's killing as well as Trudeau's allegations. In September 2023, Trudeau had accused New Delhi of having a 'potential" involvement of Indian agents in Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing. India has repeatedly denied these allegations, and has taken a decisive stand against what it perceives as Canada's non-seriousness in dealing with the Khalistan issue. The ties further strained when Trudeau named Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma as a person of interest in an investigation, without naming the case. A person of interest means a suspect who is not arrested. Earlier this year, a public inquiry on foreign interference in Canada has found 'no definitive link to a foreign state" in the killing of Nijjar. What Is Hardeep Singh Nijjar Case? Nijjar was killed on June 18, 2023, outside a gurdwara in British Columbia. According to the probe report, Canada's security and intelligence agencies initially assessed this to be a gang or criminal activity, and Trudeau was informed of this. But, as more intelligence was gathered over the summer, India's involvement was revealed and the then Prime Minister was promptly briefed on the updated assessment, the report stated. 'The government wanted India to acknowledge its involvement in the killing but also needed a pragmatic approach to resolve the issue. The then Prime Minister testified that the immediate approach was to engage with India and communicate the need for the two countries to work together while ensuring there was accountability," it said. In August and September 2023, there were a series of meetings between the National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister (NSIA), the CSIS Director, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and their Indian counterparts. Rahul also targeted Modi over his silence on former US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. It showed the path to the entire world; people from across the globe used to come to study at Nalanda University,' he said. 'People from Bihar are now forced to migrate to other states and even abroad because there are no employment opportunities here. Bihar has now become the crime capital of the country,' he said. Earlier, Rahul visited Dashrath Nagar village in Gaya district as part of his outreach campaign in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. He met the family of the late Dashrath Manjhi, famously known as the 'Mountain Man' for carving a road through a hill in Gehlor village to connect it with Wazirganj block. Rahul was received by Manjhi's son Bhagirath Manjhi, who reportedly expressed his interest in contesting the upcoming Assembly elections from Bodh Gaya, although no formal announcement was made. Rahul later went to Gehlor village and garlanded the statue of Dashrath Manjhi. This was his sixth visit to Bihar in six months. He also held a Mahila Samvad in Gaya and interacted with women.
