Dolphins stock report: Lions dominate Fins offensively and defensively
The Miami Dolphins' first joint practice against the Detroit Lions was nothing short of a disaster.
Defensively, the Dolphins couldn't stop the Lions offense as quarterback Jared Goff connected frequently with All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Offensively, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Co. failed to find the spark to get the high-powered unit rolling. Then the injury bug bit: edge rusher Chop Robinson was carted off with an undisclosed injury.
Luckily, the Dolphins have a chance to respond Thursday.
Here's a breakdown of what happened during the Dolphins' first of two joint practices against the Lions.
TOP PERFORMERS
Inside linebacker Jordyn Brooks: The inside linebacker was one of the few bright spots on a defense that consistently got gashed.
Brooks not only looked good in coverage, forcing at least one incompletion and stopping players short after catches, he was active in the run game. He met Lions tailback Jahmyr Gibbs in the hole to stop the two-time Pro Bowler at the line of scrimmage as well as showcased some elite open field tackling when he corralled fellow Detroit running back David Montgomery for a short gain.
The six-year veteran's best play came when he forced Montgomery to fumble after tackling the Lions tailback behind the line a scrimmage. While Montgomery recovered the ball, Brooks displayed a tenacity that was rarely seen on the field.
Brooks' only misstep was a defensive holding call on the final play of practice.
Running back De'Von Achane: Overall, the offense didn't play great.
Achane, however, showed a bit of life
During 7-on-7s, the third-year tailback caught a ball from Tagovailoa for a nice chunk of yards. Then, during team drills, he had a nice misdirection run that would've picked up significant yards.
STOCK UP
Edge rusher Derrick McLendon: The edge rusher continued his dominant training camp against the Lions.
Not only did McLendon consistently win his reps during 1-on-1s, he got some extended run with the starters during the situational period at the end of practice when Robinson went down.
Although he didn't make a play per sey, he remained a constant presence in the backfield.
STOCK DOWN
Defensive back Jack Jones: From the very beginning, Jones was chirping.
From the very beginning, Jones was chirping.
The only issue was that he didn't back it up.
St. Brown consistently torched the fourth-year corner who seemingly sought out the matchup against the three-time Pro Bowler. It didn't matter the period — 1-on-1s, 7-on-7s, 11-on-11s — if St. Brown saw Jones across from him, he cooked.
Even worse: St. Brown did it in a multitude of ways. He caught deep balls. He caught a 5-yard touchdown. And he did damage with his fair share of grabs in the intermediate as well.
Injury updates
As previously mentioned, Robinson was carted off although he posted on his Instagram story that he's 'good.' A source confirmed that it was not a head injury.
Edge rusher Jaelan Phillips didn't suit up with an undisclosed injury.
Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was a limited participant.
Wide receiver Tyreek Hill returned to practice following an oblique injury but didn't do anything competitive.
Edge rusher Mo Kamara remains in concussion protocol.
Right tackle Austin Jackson has a lower leg injury and is expected back by the Sept. 7 opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
Safety Ashtyn Davis is out indefinitely with a leg injury.
Fullback Alec Ingold remains in concussion protocol.
Offensive linemen Andrew Meyer is not close to returning from an undisclosed injury.
Offensive lineman Kion Smith sat out with an undisclosed injury.
Offensive lineman Bayron Matos remains out with 'an above the shoulder type injury.'
What they said:
'Today, offensively it was a very frustrating day in regards to what we wanted to do, what we said we wanted to do,' Tagovailoa said. 'We just weren't able to get things jumpstarted.'

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams appears to be more and more comfortable with his new head coach Ben Johnson by the day. Coming into this season after an offseason filled with upgrades to the coaching staff and roster, specifically the offensive line, Williams has to pay off the investment the organization has made into him during this year. In order to do so, Williams will have to show development and production under Johnson, one of the most respected offensive minds in the NFL. After being held out of the Bears first preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, Williams was on the field for two offensive drives against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night, where the second-year quarterback had his first opportunity to show his work in Johnson's offense. Williams looked quite impressive in the short showing, completing 6-of-10 passes for 107 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions or sacks. Speaking to the media after the game, Williams jokingly complimented his head coach for being "calmer" during the game in comparison to how he is at practice. 'He's a lot more calmer on game day in the mic than he is in practice with me," Williams said. "It's great. It's exciting to be sitting there, having the headpiece in my ear right after I had however many plays I had, being able to listen to him encourage the guys. I think there was a moment where we were going for it on fourth down or something like that and something happened the play before where we got the call back and we ended up lining up. He was like, 'We're going to go get this right here.' "It's just small notes like that, that are encouraging in the moment. It's something that I don't know if he knows and he's conscious of it, but it's important to us QBs when we're out there having those small notes. He's a lot calmer on game days in the mic and that's a small note.' There was no secret that Johnson was going to come in and apply pressure to Williams quickly in order to have the young quarterback understand his offense in their first year together. The quicker that Williams can pick up the offense, the quicker the team can erase the memory of their 5-12 season last year and put more wins on the board this year while their quarterback grows and develops to the next level. Clock ticking for Arizona Cardinals with cutdown deadline eight days away
Howard Balzer goes through each position, breaking them down by likelihood of making the roster. All NFL teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by 1 p.m. Arizona time on August 26. For the Arizona Cardinals, several decisions will be impacted by injured players, including those currently on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Any players placed on reserve/PUP at the cutdown must miss at least the first four games of the season and can't practice while on reserve. With 91 players currently on the roster, there will likely be several reductions made prior to the 26th. That total includes international player, tackle Roy Mbaeteka, who could be the team's 17th player on the practice squad. The waiver period ends earlier than normal after the cut to 53, which is 9 a.m. Arizona time Aug. 27, rather than 1 pm. Practice squad spots can then be filled once players clear waivers. All teams can have six veterans on the practice squad. Those players aren't part of the waiver system as their contracts are immediately terminated. Here is a look at the Cardinals' current roster. It's not a prediction of the 53, but rather the 40 position players considered safe and 17 hoping to survive cutdown day, knowing that there will be roster churn after cutdown day. Many in the 'maybe, maybe not' category will end up on the practice squad. It should never be called the 'final' cut. 4 Veteran QB's Jets Should Target as Justin Fields Struggles Continue, Including Kenny Pickett
When the gave a two-year, $40 million deal in the spring, they were hoping they could maximize his potential in a way his two previous teams couldn't. However, as the summer has unfolded, concerns about the team's starting quarterback are growing. There have been reports about inaccurate throws and poor chemistry with teammates during training camp. And his performance versus the Giants in their second preseason game was the source of ridicule and lowlight reels on social media. With the season just a couple of weeks away, the Jets should consider bringing in a veteran quarterback with starter potential. With that in mind, let's look at four players the Jets might think about trading for soon. Kenny Pickett Kenny Pickett is one of the QBs in the Browns' overcrowded QB room. He was viewed as a dark horse to start in 2025. However, a hamstring injury has destroyed those chances and made him even more expendable. While he has major flaws as well, he is a strong locker room leader who has the ability to win games on any given Sunday. He would be a far better backup option than career journeyman Tyrod Taylor. Aidan O'Connell Although Aidan O'Connell failed miserably as a starter in Las Vegas, their offense has been a mess for a couple of seasons. The one thing he has going for him compared to Taylor is his youth. There may be upside there that could be exploited by New York's coaching staff. He would give the Jets more depth and probably could be had at a cheap cost. Kirk Cousins Kirk Cousins would be a fascinating option for the New York Jets. The four-time Pro Bowler is a true pocket passer who has the resume to make fans hope he can elevate the offense. The big issue in any potential deal is the $97 million (via Spotrac) left on his contract. If Atlanta was willing to each a solid portion of that to get him off their hands — which they haven't been willing to do yet — he is a player the Jets should consider if Fields continues to prove he is not a starter in the NFL.
